Electric toothbrushes are much more commonplace these days and rightfully so. Many of these toothbrushes offer a cleaning capability that mimics a professional cleaning at the dentist's office, making your mouth feel sparkling clean on a daily basis. Once you get sick however, it is easy to wonder just how clean your electric wonder brush really is. Every bristle begins to look like a spot that germs would love to haunt. Learn maintain your toothbrush to disinfect it not only when you are sick, but even when you aren't, to help you keep both you and your brush healthy.
Instructions
1. Pour one capful of bleach into a glass or cup. Add 1/2 cup of water.
2. Turn your electric toothbrush upside down, inserting the toothbrush head into the bleach water solution, allowing the bristles to soak for several minutes. Be sure not to submerge any of the brush beyond the head, as excessive water contact could damage some of the mechanisms within the brush causing it to malfunction.
3. Remove your brush from the bleach water and rinse the toothbrush head under fresh water from the faucet. Flick the bristles using your fingers to allow the bleach water to rinse away from the bristles completely. Allow brush to air dry on a paper towel, before returning it to its charging base.
4. Alternately, you may use hydrogen peroxide to disinfect your brush. Pour undiluted hydrogen peroxide into a cup.
5. Turn the brush upside down and submerge the head of the toothbrush only. Allow to soak for several minutes.
6. Remove the brush, rinse the bristles and allow to air dry, before returning to the charging base.
7. Some toothbrush manufacturers, such as Sonicare, now sell UV sanitizer machines that disinfect electric toothbrushes at the touch of a button. Simply insert your brush, push a button, wait 10 minutes and your brush will be sanitized, eliminating any work on your end.
