Common Side Effects
Several side effects are common with Gonal-F. These include abdominal pain, breast pain, dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea, ovarian cysts and upset stomach.
Considerations
Gonal-F increases the potential for multiple births, which can be risky for both mother and babies. Premature babies may face life-threatening complications and develop long-term health problems. Postpartum depression rates are significantly higher in women with multiple births.
Birth Defects
Gonal-F causes severe birth defects, so a woman must stop using the hormone as soon as she suspects she is pregnant.
Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects associated with Gonal-F include allergic reactions and blood clots. About 5 percent of women treated with FHS develop ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), according to Drugs.com. This disorder can be fatal if not treated promptly.
Contraindications
Women with certain health conditions may not be able to safely take Gonal-F. These include abnormal vaginal bleeding, ovarian cysts, thyroid conditions and certain types of cancer.
