Prevent Falling

Senior citizens face serious consequences from tripping and falling. Every year, falls are the leading cause of accidental death for those over 65 years old. Many of these tragic falling accidents are preventable. By decreasing your chances of falling, you can remain healthy and independent.

Instructions

1. Exercise every day. Find an exercise program you enjoy, and do it faithfully. Move a lot every day. Moving does not have to be sweaty and strenuous to be effective. When you exercise, you are strengthening the muscles and bones that will help you stay upright if you trip. Weight-bearing exercise, like walking, can strengthen your bones to help prevent a hip from breaking before or after a fall. Weightlifting is one of the best types of exercise to keep your core muscles strong.

2. Make an appointment now to get both your vision and hearing checked. These two vital senses need to be at their best for you to avoid falls. Have regular checks as recommended by your vision and hearing health professionals.

3. Ask about and research the side effects of all drugs you are taking. Some drugs can cause reduced balance and coordination. If this is the case, ask your doctor for alternative drugs that do not affect your balance negatively. Avoid drinking alcohol, as it also impairs balance and coordination.

4. Move carefully at a steady pace. When getting up, get up slowly to avoid momentary dizziness. Use a cane or a walker if you need it.

5. Wear good, well-fitted shoes with low heels. Shoe manufacturers are making many more styles of sensible shoes that actually have some style to them. Do not wear high heels, flip flops or loose-fitting footwear.

6. Throw away all throw rugs and mats that you could possibly slip on. Clear all clutter from stairs and floors. Use lots of lighting and nightlights too. Check handrails for sturdiness. Repair those that are wobbly. Consider installing a stairway elevator if needed.

7. Buy a personal emergency response system. If you do fall and get hurt, you can summon help immediately with one of these systems.
