The Cost Of Removing Wisdom Teeth

The cost of wisdom tooth removal is affected by factors that are different for each case. There is no inflexible charge for any medical procedure, including dental procedures. An approximate estimate of cost can be determined by your dental care provider.

Identification

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars, which often emerge misaligned or are problematic in some way.

Fun Fact

These molars are called "wisdom teeth" because they usually emerge sometime about or shortly after one's 17th birthday. Allegedly, the person has grown wiser by that age.

Prevention/Solution

Most people have wisdom teeth extracted at an early age, if they are misaligned or impacted. Removal is more difficult when the patient is older.

Theories/Speculation

Often your dentist will recommend extraction of the wisdom teeth even when no problems exist. Extraction is far less expensive when the tooth comes out easily.

Differences In Cost

A healthy wisdom tooth will cost the same as a regular tooth to extract. What is called a soft-tissue impaction will be more expensive. A difficult extraction is classified as a bony impaction. Removing a wisdom tooth with a bony impaction can double the cost.

What Affects Cost?

Your location and the cost of living in that area determines the basic cost. Then the dentist or oral surgeon sets his or her own prices. Local anaesthetic (when you are awake but your mouth is completely numbed) is less costly than general anaesthetic (when you are asleep).
