Thyroid Deficiency Symptoms In Men

Thyroid deficiency, medically known as hypothyroidism, is a medical condition which is mainly caused due to inadequate production of the thyroid hormones [thyroxine] by the thyroid glandy. Hypothyroidism is known as cretinism when present in infants. Hypothyroidism is mainly caused due to iodine deficiency or due to exposure to radioactive form of Iodine (Iodine-131), and it is a very common disease in the developing countries even today.

Symptoms Associated with Thyroid Deficiency

Hypothyroidism usually develops over a long period generally ranging from several months to even several years in many cases. Some of the common symptoms include loss of weight and appetite, hair loss, and fatigue. The symptoms, however, are differentiated into early, late symptoms.

Some of the common symptoms associated with thyroid deficiency in men are elucidated below.

Early Symptoms of Hypothyroidism in Men

Some of the early symptoms associated with thyroid deficiency in men include muscle hypotonia (a medical condition in which the muscle tone becomes degraded), fatigue, joint and muscle pains, excessive weight increase, constipation, a decrease in the heart rate, thinning of hair and excessive hair loss, depression, and increased sensitivity towards cold weather. However, the most prominent symptom associated with early hypothyroidism is goiter: inflammation near the neck region.

Late Symptoms Associated with Hypothyroidism in Men

If hypothyroidism not treated in a timely manner, it can further develop into a more malignant form.

The symptoms associated with hypothyroidism in men during the later stages include deepening of the voice, puffy skin, thinning of the eyebrows, and lowering of the body temperature.

Other Less Common Symptoms Associated With Hypothyroidism in Men

There are various other less common symptoms that can be seen and experienced by men suffering from hypothyroidism. Some of these symptoms include impairment of memory, inattentiveness, easy irritability, anemia (which is mainly caused due to decreased hemoglobin synthesis), yellowing of the skin, decrease in the tasting ability, and delayed reflexes to various stimuli.

However, in some rare cases the patient might experience myxedema madness, which is a medical condition characterized by dementia, hallucinations, or even psychosis in certain patients.

Symptoms Associated with Secondary Hypothyroidism in Men

Secondary hypothyroidism is more common in men than in women. This disorder is mainly caused due to the decrease in secretion of Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH).

The main symptoms include apnea (an obstruction in the sleeping pattern) amd carpal tunnel syndrome (a condition where in the patient suffers from burning sensation and pain near the fingers of the hand).
