Herbs For Hep C

Alternative treatments abound for hepatitis C. There are numerous herbs that have shown promise in relieving and/or treating this serious liver ailment. Health food stores and holistic medical clinics can provide you with access to these products and treatments. As with any alternative treatment, be sure to consult your physician as people react to herbal treatments in different ways and many of these herbs can have serious interactions with other medications.

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle is one of the most common herbs associated with good liver health. When used as a treatment for hepatitis C, milk thistle can aid in the regeneration of damaged liver tissue and can help protect the liver from future effects of the virus. It can also stimulate the production of bile, help with fatigue, and can sometimes act as a very mild anti-depressant. Available in capsule form, milk thistle cannot be taken when pregnant or nursing and can have serious interactions with heart medication and anti-seizure drugs.

Dandelion

Dandelion has shown to relieve liver congestion in some people with hepatitis C. It has been shown to trigger the flow of bile and relieve constipation. Dandelion is also very rich in potassium. Commonly ingested as a tea or coffee, it is also available in tablet form. There are no known side effects or major drug interactions but as always you should consult your doctor before you begin taking this herb.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a root commonly used to treat liver inflammation. It protects against liver damage and in some cases can aid in the repair of previous damage. Turmeric also helps in removing excess cholesterol build-up in the liver and is an immune system boosting antioxidant. This root can be used in cooking or it can be ground into a fine powder that can be dissolved in water. You should not use turmeric if you have an ulcer or excessive stomach acid.
