Make Lemongrass Essential Oil

Lemongrass and sweet almond oil are used to make essential oil.

Lemongrass essential oil has a number of uses, including treating gas, oily skin and acne, stress and athlete's foot. It also functions as an effective insect repellent for mosquitoes and fleas. Homemade lemongrass essential oil is a viable alternative to expensive store-bought oil. Completing the process at home requires just a bit of time and little effort, and the money you put into it will yield a large amount of the oil.

Instructions

1. Clean and roughly chop one stalk of lemongrass into 1-inch pieces. Place the grass on a hard surface and hit it with the bottom of a heavy pan three or four times. This will open the grass up and release the grass's essential oils into the almond oil, which is known as a carrier oil.

2. Place 1/2 cup sweet almond oil and 1 cup of the crushed grass into a large clean, mason jar. Place the lid tightly on the jar. Shake lightly to distribute the oil around.

3. Place the jar in a warm spot for 24 hours.

4. Strain the contents of the jar through a piece of cheesecloth, into a second large clean, mason jar. Squeeze the cheesecloth to release as much of the infused oil into the new mason jar as possible. Discard the contents of the cheesecloth and seal the second jar. Place the second jar in a cool, dry place.

5. Clean and chop a second stalk of lemongrass as before. Crush it with the pan and add it to the first jar with another 1/2 cup sweet almond oil. Seal and shake the jar.

6. Place the first jar in a warm spot for another 24 hours.

7. Repeat the entire process for four days total to create 2 cups of essential oil.

8. Store the completed oil in a well-sealed jar in a cool, dry location for up to 6 months.
