Find A Good Surgeon

When you have to have surgery, it's important to feel comfortable knowing your procedure is going to be conducted by an expert. Sorting through the available surgeons can sometimes feel like a daunting task. However, if you know where to look and who to talk to, you can find a good surgeon to entrust with your next surgical procedure.

Instructions

1. Ask friends and family for a referral. There is a good chance one of them will be able to recommend a good surgeon. If not, they might be able to save you some time by ruling out a few surgeons they did not think were satisfactory.

2. Talk to your family doctor. He or she will most likely be able to give you a few recommendations. The only possible drawback is that the doctor might refer you to a surgeon just because he or she is a friend or professional colleague. However, the names provided by your primary care physician can provide you with a good starting point.

3. Search Internet sites that allow patients to rate their doctors. On RateMDs.com people can rate the experiences they have had with their doctor and leave specific comments. There is also a forum available for users to discuss doctors, ask questions, and offer recommendations. Another popular site is DrScore.com.

4. Read health magazines and medical journals. These publications often contain articles that spotlight good surgeons. There are several ways to find these magazines. Many doctor's offices have them available for you to read in their lobbies. Libraries usually have a several health publications to view. Don't forget to check their supply of old issues which can be just as valuable when searching for a good surgeon. Also, most journals and magazines are available online. Popular sites include Prevention.com, FamilyDoctorMag.com, and TheHealthJournals.com.

5. Interview potential doctors. Once you have narrowed your search down to a few possible candidates, schedule a meet and greet consultation. Before you go, make a list of all your questions so that you don't forget to ask anything. You should inquire about his or her qualifications and find out how much experience they have performing the particular surgery you require.
