What Is A Gait Transfer Belt

Moving elderly patients is common in hospitals, long-term care facilities and at home. Simplicity, safety and ease of use have made the gait transfer belt as much a part of caregiving as the stethoscope and blood pressure cuff.

Description

The gait transfer belt is as simple as it sounds--a belt with a quick release buckle that is used by the caregiver to assist in the movement of the patient. It is also used in therapeutic environments to assist patients who must relearn walking, sitting and standing.

Construction

The belt is primarily constructed of canvas, nylon or cotton webbing, and pricing starts at $12 for basic models. Since a single caregiver usually uses his or her own transfer belt to move a variety of patients, infection control has recently become a concern, introducing the use of other materials such as flexible vinyl. These materials and other features, like assist handles, impact cost accordingly.

Use

There are a few simple steps to safely using the transfer belt with a patient:

1. Explain to the patient what you are going to do and how the belt will help with the moving process.

2. Assist the patient to the edge of the bed or chair and allow the patient to regain balance if needed.

3. Using a front underhand grip, grasp the belt and assist the patient to the standing position, as the patient assists with his or her hands. Allow the patient to regain balance.

4. Move the patient slowly to the desired location, grasping the belt by the front (and back if required) and favoring any weakness.

5. Pause in front of the new location to allow the patient to regain balance.

6. Assist the patient to the sitting position, using a front underhand grasp to gently lower the patient to the sitting position.

7. Ensure that the patient is comfortable and stable. Remove the belt.

Tips

Wash your hands before and after use. You can additionally stabilize the patient by using non-skid slippers or socks. Always explain the procedure to the patient in a clear, simple manner and allow the patient to rest or regain balance when needed.

Summary

The gait transfer belt is a simple, powerful and safe method of transport for both the patient and caregiver. When used properly, it can be a valuable tool for movement and patient rehabilitation.
