Many women consider breast implants each year. Most women are looking for larger, perkier breasts but intend for the result to look natural on their frame. However, implants that are too large can show under skin, and too-small implants can sink into existing breast tissue and provide minimal support. For correct sizing, it is important to go to a good surgeon who will allow for plenty of time to advise you on size implants to maintain natural look and feel.

1. Measure your band size by getting an appropriate measurement from under the breasts, around the ribcage. Take a look at bras at a reputable lingerie stores that reflect your band size in higher cup sizes. Keep in mind that since bras vary between manufacturers, you can't count on your breasts fitting into a particular bra after surgery, but looking at different sizes can help you get an idea of what you may want.
2. Pick out some of your favorite shirts and dresses and take them with you to the surgeon's office for a consultation. Take a spouse or trusted friend with you to the consultation, if possible, to get a second opinion on sizes.
3. Go to your doctor's office wearing a plain sports bra. Ask him to place implants of different sizes in your bra to give you an idea of what sizes the implants will provide on your frame. Be sure that the surgeon measures the width of your breast to make sure that you're trying on sizes that fit, as an improper width will look unnatural and may show through skin.
4. Pick a few implants that seem to fit your body well. Try on your shirts and dresses to get a feel for how the implants will look under your favorite clothing. Test a slightly larger size than the one you feel is best, as breast implants settle and look a smaller after the recovery process.
5. Get opinions from your friend and from the surgeon on how these implants will look under the skin. Decide if the implants are best placed under the muscle or over the muscle. Under-the-muscle implants look more natural over time, but some surgeons are not comfortable with the more-difficult procedure. Post-op recovery is longer and a bit more painful for under-muscle implants, but the results may be worth it.
