At Home Gout Relief

Gout is a type of arthritis characterized by inflammation in the joints. Gout is distinct from other types of arthritis because the inflammation is specifically caused by deposits of uric acid crystals. Normally, uric acid is produced by the body and filtered out, so levels do not rise above 7.0 mg/dL. However, in people with gout, their bodies have an excess of uric acid that becomes deposited in the joints instead of leaving the body. A number of home remedies are available to help treat this condition.

Reduce Uric Acid Levels

One way to treat gout is to try to reduce uric acid levels. Uric acid levels can be reduced by taking Vitamin C, either in the diet or from supplements. Diets rich in citrus fruits can help relieve gout. Drinking concentrated black cherry juice can help, as well as simply drinking a lot of water in order to flush uric acid from the body. Adding a clove of raw garlic to the cherry juice makes the cherry juice work more effectively. Aside from these specific foods, gout treatment is aided by eating a generally healthy diet, rich in leafy vegetables and fruits, and maintaining a healthy weight.

Manage Pain

Applying ice to affected joints provides fast, but temporary, relief for gout. A mixture of a teaspoon of pepper and a 1 teaspoon of vinegar, boiled in one cup of water can also be applied to the inflamed or affected joints for pain relief. Feet can be soaked in ground ginger to both relieve the pain and rid the joints of uric acid.

Exercise the Joints

Daily, consistent exercises of the joints is can help relieve symptoms and remove uric acid deposits. Exercises should be performed between two and three times a day.
