How A Neti Pot Works

How a Neti Pot Works

The Physics of a Neti Pot

A neti pot works with gravity. There are two openings on the neti pot: one is placed in the nostril, while the other serves to allow air pressure to push the warm saline water from the high position (in the pot, above the nose and head) to a low position (through the sinuses and out of the opposite nostril).

The Chemistry and History of a Neti Pot

A neti pot should be filled with a warm, mild saline solution. The salt in the water has a natural antiseptic property. Historically, salt and saline solutions were used to treat and prevent infections. Ayurvedic doctors saw the benefit of using mild salt solutions to wash the sinuses, and the practice of using a neti pot has been used for centuries.

The Biology of a Neti Pot

Debris is flushed from from the nostrils and sinuses with the water flow. The natural antiseptic properties of the saline solution kill and remove bacteria and viruses before they have a chance to make you ill.
