Exercises For People With Hip Replacements

Hip replacement surgery is an option for people who have suffered serious injuries or severe arthritis. After hip replacement surgery, it is important to begin exercising as soon as you can in order to get as much range of motion as possible. While the exercises are not strenuous, the hip needs to be worked frequently to have a positive result from the surgery.

Heel Slides

Lie on your back and keep your feet flat on the floor. Slide your heel inward, bringing it as close to your buttocks as possible. Do this on the side that had the hip replacement as well as the other side. Do 10 hip slides on each side, take a 30-second break and then repeat the set.

Knee Extension

Sit in a hard-back chair and put your hands on both sides of the chair. Extend your leg until it is parallel to the floor. Hold it there for a count of five. Do this 10 times and then do the opposite leg. Take a 30-second break and then repeat the 10 lifts for each leg.

Hip Abduction

Lie on your back with your legs straight. Put your hands behind your head to make sure they don't assist or interfere in the exercise. Start with your right foot and slide it to the outside. Then slide your leg back in, but stop when your right leg is 6 inches from your left. Do this exercise 10 times, and then the same set with your left leg. Take a 30-second break and repeat the set.

Quad Lifts

Lie on your back and put a rolled-up towel under your knee. Your knee should be slightly elevated while your heel is on the floor. Raise your foot as your knee maintains contact with the rolled-up towel. Return your foot to its original position. Do this 10 times and then do another set with your other leg. Take a 30-second break and then do additional sets with both legs.

Ankle Pump

Lie on your back on the floor. Bend your feet toward your head. Hold that position for 3 seconds, then allow your feet to return to their original position. Do this 10 times with each foot and then take a 30-second break. Follow with another set.
