Different Methods Of Chiropractics

Chiropractic therapists perform neck adjustments, among other specialties.

Chiropractic is a non-invasive therapist technique used to properly align the skeletal system by manipulating the vertebrae. Chiropractic therapists use their hands or an adjusting tool to perform specific manipulations of the vertebral column. Spinal bones that aren't aligned correctly will likely disrupt nerve transmission and cause pain in the back and other parts of the body. There are a number of techniques that chiropractic therapists utilize in order to align the spine and bring a person's body into balance.

Palmer Method

Daniel D. Palmer is the founder of chiropractic theory and his method of chiropractic therapy is called "hole in one" or H.I.O. X-ray films are taken of a patient's atlas (or the first vertebrae at the top of the spine) and measurements are made within this area of the body for the purpose of adjusting the spine in different directions. Palmer believed that a perfect adjustment in the upper cervical region of the neck would cause everything else to be properly aligned. Palmer School of Chiropractic has the most widespread use of chiropractic techniques within the field of chiropractic medicine.

Graston Technique

David Graston developed the Graston Technique and it's currently a trademarked treatment method. TherapyCare Resources Inc. provides licenses to chiropractic therapists to perform this particular method and to use special instruments. This technique treats soft tissue injuries by using instruments that specifically detect and heal areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation. This particular technique consists of two training course modules that must be completed by practitioners before they can utilize this method.

Extremity Manipulation

Extremity Manipulation and Adjusting is a style used to restore mobility nerve supply to joints and extremities that are negatively affecting the nervous system. Chiropractic therapists use extremity manipulation to mobilize muscles and joints that may contribute to the cause of musculoskeletal problems. This method also encourages therapists to use the minimum amount of force possible to move muscles and joints.

Gonstead Chiropractic Technique

Invented by Dr. Clarence S. Gonstead in 1923, the Gonstead Chiropractic technique is used to treat misaligned spines and to increase muscle and joint mobility. Therapists apply different levels of pressures and address all areas of the spine subject to subluxation.
