Read on to learn practice darkness meditation.

Instructions

1. Prepare the meditation space. Remove any distracting secondary light sources. These include lighted clocks, nightlights and even the flashing light from a computer. In the darkness the smallest light can be like a beacon distracting you from your meditation.

2. Check the curtains. If the room has a window then make sure that the blinds or curtains do not allow any light in.

3. Turn out the lights and sit in a relaxed, upright position. Allow your self several minutes to relax, especially if your first instinct is fear of the darkness.

4. Breathe gently and keep you eyes open. Allow yourself to stare into the darkness.

5. Imagine the darkness surrounding you like a protective cover. It should give you a deeply soothing feeling.

6. Close your eyes and imagine yourself being absorbed into the darkness. Allow stressful thoughts to dissolve as you realize that in this moment of time you don’t have to be anywhere or do anything.

7. Emerge from your meditation slowly. Light a candle and allow your eyes to become adjusted to the light before turning on harsh electric lights.
