Prevent Drunk Driving

A car accident is a serious consequence of drunk driving.

Drunk driving is a serious offense that can lead to many problems including jail time, car wrecks, serious injury and even death. If you intend on going out for a night of drinks, you should never intend to drive yourself or friends. Learn the simple steps to prevent drunk driving to ensure your safety along with the safety of others around you.

Instructions

Preventing Drunk Driving for a Night Out

1. Start by assessing where you will be going and who will be going with you. If you can walk there, then you don't need to worry about a car or transportation. See if you can designate somebody in your group to be the designated driver who will not drink and can safely drive everyone home at the end of the evening.

2. If all of your group intends to drink, then do not take a car. Instead, research what public transportation is available. You can try bus routes, or find a good cab company in your town and decide to each put in some money for cab fare to and from the bar.

3. Ask your bartender or call information on your phone and set up to have a cab come pick you up, or find a bus stop nearby, should your designated driver end up drinking on your night out. Bartenders are typically used to drunk people trying to get home, so they may be able to give you a few numbers or information on nearby bus routes.

Preventing Drunk Driving at a Party

4. Write down on a piece of paper a few numbers for cab companies in your area, and put them up in a place where guests can see. This is a smart idea in case guests need to take a cab home, so you won't be bothered all night for numbers.

5. Collect any guest's car keys that will be drinking when they arrive to your get-together. Explain to them that if they intend on drinking, they won't get their keys back if they are intoxicated. It may be smart to simply collect all of the keys, in case a person decides to drink in the middle of the party.

6. Do not return any keys to guests that have been drinking and intend to drive home. Even if they say they are fine, they may still be above the legal limit, and therefore should not risk driving.
