Exercises For Computer Eye Strain

More than half of all regular computer users suffer from problems with their eyes. Computer-related eye stress can result in eye irritation, dry eyes, moderate to severe headaches and blurry vision. It can also lead to body fatigue and lowered efficiency at the workplace. While measures like correction of workstation postures and conditions can help alleviate the symptoms of eye strain, exercises can also help.

Palming Exercise

Place your palms together and rub them against each other for about 15 seconds or half a minute till you feel some warmth. Then close your eyes, cup your palms and place them over your eyes. Make sure the fingers of your hands overlap each other and rest softly in the middle of your forehead, without any pressure applied to your face. You should not touch your eyes with your palms. Hold this posture for a minute or two. As you become increasingly relaxed, you will see the blackness grow darker with your eyes closed. You can rest your arms on the table if you get tired. This eye-relaxing exercise will help bring back healthy meditational positive energy to your strained eyes.

Near-Far Focus Exercise

Keeping your thumb a half-foot away from your nose, make your eyes focus on the thumb. Breathe deeply and let out the breath gradually. Immediately after that, make your eyes concentrate on any object placed at distance of approximately 10 feet. Now breathe in deeply again and let out the breath gradually. Repeat this near-far focus shift no less than 15 times. This exercise will help ease the stiffness in your eyes and make them more flexible.

Scanning Exercise

Sit or stand at one end of a room. Scan around the edges of objects such as the TV, refrigerator, doors, windows or lights. Breathe normally as you start scanning from the end closest to you on one side, make a full circle and end with objects closest to you on the opposite side. Continue this scanning for no less than a couple of minutes. This exercise will help lucid movement of the eye and ease computer eye stress.

Other Eye Exercises

Keep your head still while maintaining your neck and back in a straight position. Try to look as high upward as you possibly can and then look downward. Perform this movement at least 10 times. Another exercise you could perform for computer eye strain relief is to open your eyes the widest you can, then look as far out to the right as you possibly can, followed immediately after with the left side. Do this exercise for no less than 10 times. You could also roll your eyes clockwise and anticlockwise, 10 times each, making wide circles with your eyes. Remember to close your eyes and relax for half a minute between each eye exercise.
