Essential Oils For Pain

Essential oils have long been used for treating pain, using just a few drops to rub the affected area. Pain caused by injuries, conditions and even child labor can be helped with different essential oils. There are many to choose from, so if you don't particularly like one or it doesn't work well, there are always others try to. You can use essential oils alone or combine them with more traditional means of pain relief.

Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is perhaps the most popular choice in essential oils used for pain relief. Lavender oil is a sedative that affects the entire central nervous system. It can help to massage lavender oil on areas affected by cramps, muscle spasms, strains, sprains and even pain caused by arthritis. You can also use lavender oil to relieve headaches, stress, tension and to treat insomnia. It is important to use only as much lavender oil as you need, because when used in large quantities, it can have a stimulant-like effect on the body.

Chamomile Oil

Chamomile oil is another favorite in essential oils used for pain relief. Chamomile is a natural anti-inflammatory, and, for this reason, you can use it to treat muscle pain, low back pain, and pain caused from temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), a painful condition affecting the jaw. You can also use chamomile oil to relieve the pain caused from menstrual cramps and digestive upset.

Clary Sage

Clary Sage oil is an essential oil that you need only use in very small quantities to have a pain-relieving affect. Clary sage oil is not the same as sage oil. Clary Sage oil can cause intoxication when used in large doses and will provide a sense of euphoria to most who use it. This is an oil of choice for many who suffer from muscle spasms, aches and pains of muscles, and cramping. You can also use it to help treat the discomfort of menstrual cramps, and it is often used in conjunction with chamomile. Simply rubbing a drop or two into the affected area will make a big difference in the pain you are experiencing.

Sweet Marjoram

Marjoram is often thought of as something used in the kitchen, but its oils can also help with pain relief. Sweet marjoram oil actually works as a natural sedative and is particularly useful when rubbed into areas that are generally painful or stiff. You can also use the oil to treat sprains, strains, spasms, arthritis pain, migraines and menstrual cramps quite effectively.

Sandalwood

You can use sandalwood in its oil form or as incense, and it has been long used as an Ayurvedic treatment. You can use both the oil and in the incense to treat sciatica pain as well as congestion of the lymph systems. As incense, sandalwood is known to help treat depression, problems with sleep, grief and aggression.
