If left untreated HPV can cause genital warts and cancer. The National Cancer Institute recognizes untreated HPV as one of the most common causes of cervical cancer.
Warning
The virus is found in or on the genital area, but you cannot see it. Most people who have HPV are not aware hat they have it. You should go to the doctor for routine visits if you are sexually active.
Prevention/Solution
A vaccine to protect women from the virus, Gardasil, is available. It is highly recommended for women between the ages of nine and 26. The Center for Disease Control also recommends using condoms to prevent contracting HPV.
