Breathing Exercises For Singing Warmup

It's showtime, folks!

Warm-up exercises play a crucial role in any singer's professional life. Warm-up exercises not only prepare the voice for the show, but also work to sharpen breath control and resonance while increasing awareness of the muscles that are used during the singing of a song, regardless of genre.

Breathe

Start with a breathing exercise. Proper breath control is the basis of all powerful singing. Your ability to develop and sustain breath control can be a powerful part of your instrument when, for example, you need to sustain the highest note in your range over the course of five measures of a song.

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent. Close your eyes and check in with your body. If you feel tense anywhere, breathe into that area and imagine releasing that tension as you exhale. Next, over the course of a minute, gradually slow and deepen your breathing. After, begin by taking a deep, full breath and exhale while hissing. The goal is, while exhaling normally, to sustain the hiss as long as possible. Repeat this for 5 minutes.

Lip Rolls

Loosen up the muscles of your face with lip rolls. Lip rolls are a common vocal technique used as a precursor to actual sound warm-ups. In this case, you will practice the exercise first and then repeat the exercise while combining it with a sustaining exercise.

Begin by placing your lips together and then exhaling so air passes between them and causes your lips to flap, not unlike what you might do at the end of a long day. Breathing normally, do this for 1 minute. Repeat this exercise again for 5 minutes but this time, sustain the lip roll for as long as you can.

Hum

Combine lip rolls and sustaining exercises while emitting sound. After gradually warming up first through breath control and the warming-up of facial muscles, you will be ready to start releasing sound.

Hum with your lips closed. Breathe normally and use low volume to start. Explore the resonance in your head by focusing the sound on one breath toward the lips, then the top of the head, the throat, jaw, nose, forehead and back of the skull.

Take a breath and do another lip roll. As you begin to exhale, hum at the same time. Do this for a minute. After, repeat the process, with two small changes. For 2 seconds, hum while performing a lip roll. Without stopping, abruptly change from the lip roll back to humming with your lips closed for an additional 2 seconds. Immediately after 2 seconds pass, open your mouth and exhale while saying "ah" and hold this for 2 seconds. Repeat this process for 5 minutes.
