What Are The Techniques Of Body Mechanics

Body mechanics is the correct use of muscles to complete a physical task such as carrying, lifting, pulling or pushing, so that no undue strain is placed on any muscle or joint.

Lifting

Lifting of a patient by a nurse should be performed using mainly the strong leg muscles. The back should be kept straight and any bending should take place at the knees and the hips. Lifting should be performed in a single, smooth action.

Turning or Pivoting

If you need to turn or pivot when carrying an object, the correct body mechanics technique is to maintain a solid center of gravity, by placing one foot slightly ahead of the other. Turning should be performed on the heel of one foot and the toe of the other.

Reaching

If you need to reach for an object, you should make sure that it is not too heavy to be lifted comfortably. Again, you should maintain good balance and avoid twisting or stretching unduly to prevent musculoskeletal strains.
