Vitamin Supplements For Cancer

While traditional treatments for cancer include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, vitamin supplements can effectively decrease the side effects of these procedures and stimulate healing. The antioxidant properties of certain nutritional supplements may even specifically target cancer cells and destroy them. Before starting any supplementation, discuss with your doctor the possible interactions vitamins may have on chemotherapy drugs. Although in some cases, the effects may be negative, vitamins and antioxidants may actually enhance the nature of these drugs.

Vitamin D

As one of the main vitamins for regulating the production of protein responsible for normal cell growth and division, vitamin D stimulates the body's natural defense against cancer. Since cancer is defined as uncontrolled cell growth, this vitamin is beneficial as a preventative as well as part of a treatment plan for the disease.

Vitamin C

Research conducted by the late Dr. Linus Pauling demonstrated that high doses of vitamin C stimulate the immune system to attack cancer cells. It is believed that a large concentration of this vitamin in the body produces hydrogen peroxide, which kills cancer cells but doesn't affect normal cells.

IP6

Chemically known as inositol hexophosphate, this member of the B6 family has been shown to slow and stop the growth of cancer cells.

Quercetin

Classified as both an antioxidant and flavonoid, quercetin protects the cells from damage caused by free radicals and has anti-tumor properties. It helps to control the body's reaction to stress on a molecular level, and has the potential to prevent or stop cancer cells from forming.

Vitamin E

This nutrient has antioxidant properties that can halt chemical reactions that damage the cells, which weaken their structure and may lead to the development of cancer cells.

Selenium

This powerful antioxidant inhibits the formation of cancer cells by neutralizing the damage caused in the body by free radicals.
