Lipid disorder consists of high blood cholesterol and triglycerides. Obesity, drinking too much alcohol and smoking can increase triglycerides. Saturated fats are found mainly in red meat, egg yolks and high-fat dairy products. Commercial, processed food products typically include Trans fatty acids.


Medications


Although taking medication can treat medical conditions, some medicines may cause high triglycerides. For instance, beta-blocker medicines treat heart conditions, such as heart failure, irregular heart rates, glaucoma and migraines. The beta-blocker medicines work by slowing down the heart rate and reducing oxygen. Beta-blocker medicines, however, can cause high triglycerides. Taking medications such as estrogen and birth control pills also causes triglycerides to increase. Diuretics medicines, which remove water from the body, also causes high triglycerides. An individual taking anti-depressants, tamoxifen or steroids may develop the condition.


Medical Condition and Genetics


Triglycerides are also affected by medical conditions, such as Cushing syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome and kidney disease. Uncontrolled diabetes, which consists of continuous high blood sugar levels, may result in high triglycerides. A person with an underactive thyroid, commonly called hypothyroidism, may suffer from an increase in triglycerides. Another cause for a raise in triglycerides includes genetics. For instance, familial combined hyperlipidemia occurs when a person inherits high blood triglycerides and high cholesterol . Familial dysbetalipoproteinemia, familial hypertriglyceridemia and familial hypercholesterolemia are all inherited disorders which cause high triglycerides.


Considerations


High triglycerides occur when levels range from 200 to 499 . Triglycerides ranging above 500 are described as very high . Treatment options vary depending on the causes of the high level of fat in the blood and risk factors, such as age and medical history. Lifestyle changes, like maintaining a healthy weight, limiting fat, becoming more active and drinking less alcohol may lower triglycerides.
