Signs That A Child Is Bipolar

Although many cases of bipolar disorder are not diagnosed until adolescence or adulthood, increased understanding of bipolar symptoms is leading to earlier diagnosis. Early intervention can lead to more sustainable coping mechanism for children with bipolar disorder and their families. Symptoms of bipolar disorder are often different in children than in adults.

Rapid Cycling

Rapid cycling between manic and depressive phases---often within the same day---is a distinguishing feature of bipolar disorder in children. In contrast, adults with bipolar tend to cycle more slowly, staying in one phase for days, weeks or months.

Irritability

Bipolar disorder in children often manifests as a pervasive, irritable mood accompanied by temper tantrums or destructive outbursts.

Anxiety

Separation anxiety is especially common in children with bipolar disorder. Other signs of anxiety include bed-wetting, nightmares and trouble sleeping.

Grandiose Ideas

Children with bipolar disorder may have an inflated or illogical perception of their abilities, leading to risky behavior. For example, a child with bipolar disorder may jump off a roof, believing she can fly.

Erratic Behavior

A child with bipolar disorder may start many projects at once, seem to be always "on the go" or talk quickly or excessively.

Other Disorders

Because bipolar symptoms in children mimic symptoms of other disorders---such as ADHD or anxiety---consult a qualified mental health professional with any concerns about a child's mental health.
