What Is A Breast Lift

Breasts often sag, whether due to expanding and retracting breast tissue in pregnancy and nursing or due to aging. To correct this issue, there is the breast lift, or mastoplexy. It is plastic surgery done for solely cosmetic reasons.

Function

The breast lift enhances the appearance of breasts that are sagging by reshaping them and, in some cases, using implants to restore unfilled areas where tissue once was. Others choose to have a reduction and lift, allowing the surgeon to cut away unused skin to minimize future sagging.

Benefits

Many women report an increase in self-esteem from plastic surgery. Cosmetic enhancements such as a breast lift can renew a woman's positive self-image.

Considerations

While the goal of a breast lift is cosmetic enhancement, there is often scarring in order to obtain the perfect shape. In order to create the correct projection and shape, doctors have to cut the skin to restructure the breast.

Warning

Breast lift is a surgery, which means there is risk involved. The main risk with any surgery is complications from the anesthesia, which can result in death in severe instances. Most anesthesia complications are minor, including nausea or vomiting.

Fun Fact

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that while there was less than 8,000 breast lift procedures performed in 1992, there were over 126,000 performed in 2007.
