Preliminary Details
Before braces are put in, the patient's teeth have to be free from cavities, gum disease and other dental issues that could present a problem during the orthodontics. Wisdom teeth sometimes need to be removed. You cannot move teeth around safely if there is a serious dental condition present. So the orthodontist will have the patient referred for a thorough cleaning, filling of cavities and correcting other potential issues.
A dental mold is taken of your teeth with plaster before braces are put in. The orthodontist packs a tray with dental plaster and then tells you to sink your teeth into it. About a week later, a mold of your teeth is created from the imprint. This is done so that the orthodontist can track your progress and make decisions about where to place the brackets.
Placement of Brackets
Once the patient is cleared for orthodontics, the orthodontist will proceed to attach the brackets to your teeth. The teeth may be buffed first and then a small amount of a special dental glue is applied to the surface. The brackets are placed strategically on each tooth to assure the proper straightening. This is a long process because the orthodontist must assure that the placement is just right. When done, the dentist will dry and set each bracket with a plasma light that emits a strong ultraviolet ray.
Insertion of Wire
Once the brackets are set and dried, the orthodontist will insert a thin wire to complete the braces. The wire is specially chosen by the dentist to address your specific dental problem. Wires come in various thicknesses and lengths. The brace wire is lined against the openings of the brackets and held in place. Then the orthodontist snaps each of the brackets shut. Once all of the brackets are securely closed, the process of putting the braces in is finally complete.
Maintenance
Throughout the orthodontic treatment, the brace wires are replaced and adjusted to assure that the teeth move into place correctly. You must visit your orthodontist every month so that he can evaluate the progress of your teeth. Once the treatment is completed and the braces are removed, a mold will again be taken so that the orthodontist can make a retainer to maintain the position of your teeth.
