Make Life Easier After Shoulder Surgery

Life after shoulder surgery can be difficult. In addition to pain management, you will find that it is necessary to adjust to using only one hand for a while. Your arm will be in a sling for a number of weeks, and your movement may be restricted by additional factors depending on the extent of your surgery.

Instructions

Prepare in Advance

1. Prepare several meals that can be frozen and microwaved after your surgery. Choose foods that do not need to be cut into pieces. Mild foods may be a good choice, since you may experience some nausea with pain medication.

2. Spend a day getting familiar with your upcoming limitations. Try putting your arm in a sling and go about your daily tasks throughout the house. You will quickly see that there will be things you need to modify in order to function with one hand. Items may need to be moved to more convenient locations, and some tasks that you might think can be done with one hand may prove impossible.

3. Find some shoes that slip on or close with Velcro. You will be unable to tie your shoes for a while.

4. Find shirts that are easy to take on and off. Pants with elastic waistbands, sweat pants or lounge pants will be best during the weeks following surgery. Zippers and buttons will be difficult to close with one hand.

5. Hire some help. It will be helpful to have someone assist you with cleaning, laundry and cooking after your surgery. If you cannot afford to hire a professional, see if friends, family members or neighbors will be willing to pitch in.

6. Gather items that you will want to have nearby and place them in the area where you plan to rest and relax at home. Tissues, rolled up towels for support, a good book or magazine, television remote and telephone can all be collected in a basket so they will be handy when needed.

7. Visit with your doctor and educate yourself about the recovery process. Pick up a prescription for at least one week's worth of pain medication before you go in for surgery.

8. Rest and follow your doctor's instructions completely. This will ensure a quicker, more painless recovery. Resist the urge to overdo activity.

9. Sleep in a recliner if at all possible. The semi-reclining position and armrests will make you comfortable for the first several days after you return home.

10. Begin your physical therapy exercises as soon as you are able. Your doctor will give you thorough instructions and you may also see a physical therapist. Perform your exercises vigilantly, as this will speed your recovery.

11. Contact your doctor if you experience severe pain or have any other concerns regarding your recovery.
