Human papilloma virus is a very common sexually transmitted disease that will affect about half of all people who are sexually active at some point in their lives. There about 100 viruses known to cause HPV, and the vast majority go away without treatment. However, a few types of human papilloma virus can cause cancer of the cervix, penis and anus.
Genital Warts
In women, genital warts on or near the vulva, anus, cervix and vagina and in men on or near the penis, scrotum and anus can be a sign of an HPV infection.
Genital Lesions
Some forms of HPV can cause precancerous lesions on and around the genitals. With some types of infection, these lesions will advance will cancer. Lesions can be detected with a pap test.
Other Warts and Lesions
With some types of HPV, warts and lesions will develop on the tongue, tonsils, nostrils and larynx.
Tumors and Cancer
With the types of HPV that can cause cancer, tumors and cervical cancer can develop. However, the vast majority of HPV infections do not lead to cancer.
No Noticeable Symptoms
Many people who contract human papilloma virus will not develop any noticeable symptoms, which is why regular checkups are important if you are sexually active.
