Natural Remedies For Sinus Infections

Sinus infections may result from the common cold, allergies, or bacterial or viral respiratory infections. Although some over-the-counter medications are available for treating sinus infections, according to the Mayo Clinic, most are not any more effective than household remedies. Using natural remedies to treat sinus infections is inexpensive and is safe for most people.

Sinus Rinses

Use a squeeze bottle or neti pot with a saline solution to rinse the sinuses. This flushes and thins out mucus, easing congestion.

Tea

Lemon juice and honey mixed with warm water or added to hot tea can relieve both coughing and sore throats caused by sinus infections.

Chicken Soup

According to the Mayo Clinic, chicken soup can reduce inflammation of the throat and nasal passages, which can help thin out mucus and relieve sore throats.

Steam

The steam from running a warm or hot shower or holding your head over a bowl of hot water can relieve congestion and sinus pressure, especially in children.

Humidity

A warm or cold mist humidifier adds humidity to indoor household air, which can relieve dryness of the nasal passages, but humidifiers must be cleaned every day to avoid mold growth.

Benefits

Steam and humidity can relieve itchy or dry skin, as well as decrease static electricity inside the house.

Warning

Honey should not be given to infants less than one year old due to the risk of developing infantile botulism, which can be fatal.
