Signs & Symptoms Of A Pregnancy Headache

Many women suffer from headaches during pregnancy. They can be very painful and stressful. Knowing the causes and treatments can help lessen your pain and make your pregnancy much more enjoyable.

Time Frame

Headaches are more prevalent during the first and third trimesters, but can happen anytime during your pregnancy.

Causes

Some possible headache triggers during pregnancy include changes in hormone levels and blood glucose levels, inadequate sleep, withdrawal from caffeine, changes in posture and vision, or even preeclampsia.

Symptoms

Pregnancy headaches can include mild to moderate pain in any area of the head or face. They aren't usually as severe as migraines.

Treatment

Before taking medications, try natural ways to alleviate pain, such as getting more rest, eating healthier, and getting a massage at the first sign of pain.

Prevention

One way to prevent pregnancy headaches is to avoid foods that trigger them, such as chocolate, yogurt, peanuts, certain cheeses and sour cream. Taking good care of yourself--getting plenty of rest, proper nutrition, and regular exercise--also can help you to prevent these headaches.

Warning

Contact your physician immediately if your headaches become more severe or you also experience swelling of extremities, blurred vision or abdominal pain.
