Most people have physical habits that are harmful, but either don't realize they have them or don't know control them. The Alexander Technique works to transform these bad habits by teaching the appropriate amount of effort for a particular activity--it is a reeducation of the mind and body. The Alexander Technique has special importance for the neck and the way you hold your head. Head movements are dependent on powerful reflexes that can force the body to contort itself in order to remain balanced. However, trauma or bad posture can lead to chronic neck pain. Here's relieve neck pain with this technique.

Instructions

1. Sit in a chair like you normally would. Don't try to change your position or sit "correctly." Focus on the back of the neck and base of the skull. Take notice of any tension.

2. Softly, allow the top of your head to fall slightly forward away from your spine. Allowing your head to fall slightly forward, rather than moving it muscularly, allows for some relief, according to Leland Vall, certified Alexander Technique instructor.

3. With every shift in your position, focus on your neck while moving more slowly.

4. Again, allow your head to fall slightly with a non-muscular movement. Keep your spine straight as if it were pointing toward the ceiling.
