Motivate People To Succeed

The ability to motivate people to succeed is a phenomenal and important skill to possess. Developing this skill might seem intimidating at first, but by taking baby steps you will soon be on your way to being a proficient motivator.

Instructions

1. Spend some time thinking about the person in your life you are trying to motivate to succeed. Ask yourself, what are they good at? What do you appreciate about this person? Why do you respect them as an individual? Use a piece of paper and a pen to make a list of all of their special and redeeming qualities.

2. The next time you see the person you want to motivate, remember the list from above that you created. Remind the person about their talents, good qualities, and admirable traits. It is especially helpful to bring these up when the person is feeling frustrated or overwhelmed. For example, if you are motivating a volleyball player, it might be helpful to encourage them after a difficult game.

3. Send encouragement and motivation to this person through positive and uplifting e-mails, greeting cards, and phone calls. The e-mails, cards, and phone calls do not have to be lengthy. They can be short and simple. The most important part is not the length of these forms of communication, but the positivity they contain.

4. If the person you are motivating is focusing too much on their faults or mistakes, spend time discussing times they have been successful with their hobby, activity, or skill. For example, if you are working with someone who is a musician, help them focus on times they had their best performances or played their instrument really well. Focusing on times they were successful will remind the person you are mentoring that they are talented.

5. Give this person your phone number or e-mail so they can contact you if they are feeling upset or negative. Let them know they can contact you if they need to talk or additional support.
