Home Remedies For Enlarged Pores

There doesn't seem to be a consensus on what causes large pores. The debate ranges from aging to genetics to oily skin. Most doctors believe that an over production of sebum (the oil secreted by the pores) is most likely the reason for large pores. The sebum hardens in the pores and enlarges them. Keeping the pores clean is the best way to reduce pore size. Home remedies and natural treatments can help reduce large pores.

Sauna or Steam

Using a sauna is a good way to open the pores, soften the hardened oil and clean out the pores. If you don't have a sauna at home, you can create one. Turn on the shower, and use the stream as a make-shift sauna. For the facial steam, boil a pot of water. Once the water has cooled a bit, bend over, and let the stream flow over your face.

Salt and Buttermilk

A paste of table salt and buttermilk makes a good scrub for the pores. The salt scrubs away the excess oil, dirt and dead skin cells in the pores. The lactic acid in the buttermilk also helps treat large pores by mildly sloughing off the dead skin cells. Leave the paste on the skin for 20 minutes, and wash with lukewarm water.

Sugar Scrub

Many holistic healers recommend a sugar scrub. Make a paste of sugar and water. Apply and massage over the area. After 15 minutes, wash it off. Like salt, sugar has an abrasive action that can get into the pores and clean them out. This scrub also removes dead skin cells and other debris that may be clogging pores.

Egg Whites

A mask of egg whites can temporarily tighten large pores. Crack an egg, and remove the yolk. Apply the egg white to the skin, and allow it to dry and harden. Leave it on for 15 minutes, and then wash off with cool water. The egg white not only exfoliates the skin, but it also can make pores look smaller. The cool water helps keep pores closed.
