Products For The Elderly

As one grows older, one develops a need for special items and devices to help in day-to-day living, due to arthritis, lack of mobility, incontinence and other specific problems of aging. A need to be independent is realistically possible for many seniors through various help services that are always available at a moment's notice, should there become a need.

Function

Arthritis affects the function of the hands in a lot of people, making it difficult to unscrew jam jars. This product, Un-Skru, available widely at retailers, affixes to the underside of cupboards or countertops to work for you. This kitchen gadget allows you to unscrew jars using just one hand. No straining or, sore hands; just functional practicality.

Effects

Seniors suffering from the devastating effects of osteoporosis may need a lifting device to help them get in and out of a seat. Simple actions like getting up from a chair may cause brittle bones to fracture, and help would normally be necessary. Chair lifts are inexpensive, practical and eliminate the need for another person's help. Priced affordably at around $40, the simple chair lift device is a bargain. Plush and comfortable reclining chair lifts with attached remotes are available for around $600 (see Resources below).

Prevention/Solution

As one gets older, the body starts to slow down, and bladder control may become difficult. Incontinence may affect a senior's lifestyle to a point where going to functions outside of the home isn't an option. Prevention of little accidents is possible with male and female personal undergarments that fit snugly and discreetly under normal, everyday clothes so that nobody suspects bladder dysfunction (see Resources below).

Benefits

Medicare recently abolished the "chair or bed confinement rule" so seniors could qualify for an electric mobility device such as a scooter or mobility chair. Medicare also abolished the need for a Certificate of Medical Necessity form. All one has to do to qualify is to have a need to move around in the home. Quoting Medicare: Medicare will accept, "...documentation in the medical record of the beneficiary's need for assistance with mobility in the home, as well as the type of technology needed," along with a written prescription from the doctor to the supplier.

Time Frame

Time is of the essence when it comes to seniors falling down and unable to get up due to healh conditions or medical emergencies. Living alone in the home through personal choice poses less of a risk for vulnerable seniors when wearing a medic alert necklace (see Resources below) where help is always at one's fingertips.
