Start A Hospice Business Using A Stepbystep Plan

A hospice business can provide care at a facility or in the home

Hospice care emphasizes quality, rather than quantity of life. It is a service provided to patients with limited life expectancy - those with a terminal illness. Hospices help patients and family prepare for death. Patients receive medical care that neither hastens nor postpones death. The amount of emotional, spiritual and physical support provided by a hospice will vary according to patient and family needs.

Instructions

1. Scope out the market and competition. If your area is flooded with hospices, you may want to consider opening in another location. Seek funding to start your business - including loans from banks or gifts from private contributors. You may choose to run your hospice business from a commercial site, or from home where you can send out staff and volunteers. You can seek a franchise or start your own company.

2. Apply for a license. Each state has its own hospice requirements. Contact your state health department for details. You will need Medicare certification. Information on this process can also be obtained from your state health department. Purchasing or leasing space for your business comes with its own set of contracts, funding and occupation requirements.

Consider joining organizations focused on hospice or home care such as the National Association for Home Care and Hospice. Seek accreditation from a nationally recognized accrediting body such as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

3. Hire staff, recruit volunteers. You will need nurses, doctors, social workers, clergymen and aides for your hospice business. Your staff should be experienced and flexible. Volunteers can help with office duties or to sit with patients. Volunteers require training.

4. Market your business. Marketing strategies include creating a website, flyers, posters, advertising in local publications and word of mouth. Develop a mission statement for your business. Outline costs, payment procedures, services, eligibility and more information in a brochure for potential patients.
