1. Read the details of each plan. Go to the Weight Watchers and Best Life Diet websites for explanations about each diet. There is a fee to become an online member.
2. Buy Bob Greene's book to get the full gist of how the program works. Also, consider attending a Weight Watchers meeting--for free--to check it out.
3. Choose foods from an approved Core list. This includes vegetables, fruits, non-creamy soups, whole-wheat pasta, brown rice, potatoes, high-fiber cereals and grains.
4. Follow the three phases of the Best Life Diet. During the first, you focus on raising your activity level and regulating your meal schedule. In Phases 2 and 3, you have to avoid six foods: high-fat dairy products, white bread, regular pasta, trans fats, fried foods, sugary sodas and alcohol.
5. Pay attention to your hunger, not to counting Points or calories. You don't have to on either plan. Instead, listen to your body and stop eating when you're satisfied. Learn your comfort zone of hunger.
6. Add in some extras. During Phase 3 of the Best Life Diet, you get Anything Goes calories. Weight Watchers gives you 35 Flex Points per week. Both can be used for splurges.
