Breast Cancer Awarence Month

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the most common cancer among all women and is not prejudice to age or race. It is the most common cause of death due to cancer among Hispanic women. And though rare, breast cancer affects men. These statistics are the fuel behind Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as its founders fight to save lives from this terrifying disease.


The Founders


Breast Cancer Awareness Month has three original founders: the American Academy of Family Physicians, AstraZeneca Healthcare Foundation and CancerCare Inc.








The Beginning


Breast Cancer Awareness Month began as a week long event in October 1985. It soon became a month long event and will be celebrating 25 years of education in October 2009.


The Purpose


Breast Cancer Awareness Month was began to educate the public about the importance of early detection and treatment for breast cancer. Their goal is to save lives.


Features


During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, extra effort is made to raise awareness about breast cancer, as well as raise money for research that will one day lead to a cure.


Identificaton


Pink is the color of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is generally in the form of pink ribbons that are worn by both survivors and supporters. Though seen throughout the year, it is most prevalent during the month of October.


Events


The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Organization holds many events throughout the year, nationwide, for various reasons. Some events are to raise awareness and some are to give updates on breakthroughs in research. The most important events though are the fundraisers such as the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
