Simvastatin Side Effects

Simvastatin is the generic name for the brand-name drug Zocor. It is most often prescribed to lower high cholesterol levels or to help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, heart attacks and strokes in patients who are at high risk for these problems. Simvastatin is taken orally, and is available in tablets ranging in dose from 5 mg to 80 mg. Many people suffer no side effects from the drug, but side effects are possible, and vary in terms of severity.

Common Side Effects

In clinical trials, the most commonly reported side effects were upper respiratory infections, headaches, abdominal pains, constipation and nausea.

Serious Side Effects

The following side effects, while highly unlikely, may be very serious: yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark-colored urine, severe fatigue, stomach or abdominal pain, or persistent nausea. Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

Muscle Problems

Muscle problems are infrequent, but you should tell your doctor immediately if you experience the following: muscle pain, tenderness, weakness (especially if it's accompanied by fever or unusual tiredness) or a change in the amount of urine your body excretes.

Allergic Reactions

You should seek medical attention immediately if you think you may be suffering from an allergic reaction. Signs include a rash, itching, swelling, dizziness or difficulty breathing.

Other Side Effects

Other side effects that have been reported include (but are not limited to) diarrhea, flatulence, photosensitivity, fever, chills, flushing and fatigue.
