Low Testosterone In Women

Testosterone in women functions to promote interest in sexual activity and helps to make sexual activity more enjoyable. The causes for low testosterone levels in women include hormonal changes after childbirth and menopause, diseases such as diabetes and medications such as chemotherapy and birth control. Women with low testosterone levels may benefit from the use of medical treatments to reduce problematic symptoms.


Libido


Women with low testosterone levels may have low or no interest in sexual activity (libido), which is common after childbirth and during menopause.


Vaginal dryness


Vaginal dryness is a symptom of low testosterone in women and may cause difficulty with sexual activity, self care and hygiene.


Painful intercourse


Low testosterone levels may cause problems with maintaining sexual arousal and may lead to painful sexual intercourse for women.


Anorgasmia


Inability to have orgasms during sexual activity is a symptom of low testosterone levels in women.


Osteoporosis


According to the Mayo Clinic, low testosterone may be a factor in the development of osteoporosis in women.








Psychological


Women with low testosterone levels may experience depression or dissatisfaction especially if sexual problems related to low testosterone are present.


Prevention/Solution


Treatments for low testosterone levels in women include patches, topical ointments and medications and can resolve symptoms but are not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or women with liver disease.
