Allergan Breast Expander

The Allergan Breast Expander is used during breast reconstruction after mastectomy.

The Allergan Breast Expander is a medical device used to assist surgeons with breast reconstruction, typically after mastectomy following breast cancer. The device works by slowly expanding the tissue to allow for the insertion of a breast implant during reconstruction.

Use

The Allergan Breast Expander is similar to a balloon. The expander is placed beneath the skin and muscle tissue in the location where the implant will be placed. The expander is then filled with saline slowly on a weekly basis to allow the tissue to expand enough to allow space for the implant to be inserted. After three to four months when the tissue has expanded sufficiently, the expander is removed and replaced surgically with a permanent breast implant.

Risks

Tissue expansion surgery is not without its risks. According to the Allergan information leaflet, potential risks include deflation of the tissue expander, which requires surgical removal, and skin breakdown caused by reduced blood supply.

Considerations

All potential risks should be discussed with your doctor prior to agreeing to the procedure.
