Keep Your Swimming Pool Crystal Clear

Keeping your pool water sparkling involves several steps.

Just as it's refreshing to jump into a sparkling and clear-blue swimming pool on a hot summer's day, it can be disturbing and worrisome to jump into a swimming pool that has foggy or murky water with bits of particles floating in it. Keeping your swimming pool clear depends on three things: the chemicals in the water, the cleaning that you perform and the circulation of the water. If you attend to all these elements, your pool water will look like the water washing up on a tropical beach.

Instructions

1. Test the chlorine in the water using the test strips in an orthotolidine (OTO) kit. Ensure that your pool has an adequate amount of chlorine. The alkalinity should read between 100 and 150 parts per million. Use the pH test strip from the kit and dip it in the pool water. Your pool water should have a pH of between 7.4 and 7.6. Add soda ash if the pH is too low, and add muriatic acid if the pH is too high. Add these items gradually -- 1 oz. at a time for every 1,000 gallons of water.

2. Use a manual or automatic pool skimmer to keep the water free of bugs, leaves and other items. Vacuum the pool floor as well as the sides with a pool vacuum. Perform these activities once a week.

3. Add 1 oz. of pool clarifier to the water for every 5,000 gallons. This substance will have a drastic effect in making your pool water seem much brighter and more sparkling.

4. Run your pool filtration system as often as possible. While this will impact your electric bill, keeping your water circulating as much as possible will keep the water looking clear and inhibit and reduce debris.

5. Change your pump's filter every three months or so. Your filter is what screens out all the debris and other gunk. if the filter gets full it can't do its job properly.
