Physical Signs Of A Stroke

When there is a loss of blood flow to any part of the brain, the result is a stroke. There are many symptoms that can indicate a stroke, including mental symptoms such as disorientation and confusion. In addition to the immediate effects on a stroke victim's mental state, there are also physical signs that can be detected in an individual who has suffered a stroke.

Numbness

The loss of blood to any portion of the brain will disrupt the proper function of the area of the body that is controlled by that portion of the brain. This disruption can result in a disconnection between the nerves in that portion of the body and the brain. Without the ability to process the signals being sent by the body, the stroke victim is unable to feel sensation in the affected area, and experiences numbness.

Weakness

Individuals who are experiencing a stroke may have a loss of muscle control or strength on one side of the body. This symptom also results from a lack of blood flow to the portion of the brain responsible for controlling that portion of the body. Weak muscle response on one side of the body, including facial muscles, can indicate a stroke.

Headache

Headache pain can be a symptom of a stroke when it is under certain circumstances. If the headache occurs suddenly, and is extremely painful, or is different from other headaches experienced by the same individual, it may be the result of a stroke. In addition, headaches associated with stroke can also include symptoms such as vomiting, stiffness in the neck, and pain between the eyes and around the facial area.

Vision Disturbance

When the back of the brain experiences a lack of blood flow, the stroke victim's vision is affected. This is due to the location of the occipital lobe of the brain, which controls vision. Stroke victims may experience blurring or loss of sight. The vision problems experienced during and after a stroke can affect one or both eyes.

Dizziness

Sudden dizziness is another symptom experienced by many individuals during a stroke. People who are suffering from a stroke may have difficulty walking due to their dizziness and may lose their balance frequently. In addition, individuals who are suffering from a stroke may exhibit a lack of coordination in their actions.
