Choose A Beauty Salon Air Purifier

Salon treatments can release harmful chemicals into the air.

Manicures, pedicures and chemical hair products can release pollutants into the air that may contribute to health problems if not managed properly. Air purifiers can help address some of the concerns caused by indoor air pollution in salons. In order to select the most effective air purifier for your salon, first identify which pollutants are being released. As well as functionality, choose a purifier that will fit in your salon space and be quiet enough not to disturb clients.

Instructions

1. Be aware of what pollutants are being released into the salon environment and the risks that these substances pose. Products used in manicures and pedicures, for example, contain solvents that release volatile organic compounds that can cause respiratory problems. Some nail-care products contain a compound called ethyl methacrylate, which has been linked to asthma. Not all air purifiers are designed to handle these substances.

2. Find an impartial and authoritative source that will list the properties of the air purifiers that you are considering. Make sure that the air purifier you choose is designed to handle the specific pollutants in your beauty salon. The Environmental Protection Agency publishes reports on indoor air purifier effectiveness, and nonprofit consumer research groups have also published guides and reviews with precise specifications.

3. Measure the square footage of your salon. Choose an air purifier that can effectively treat the entire area.

4. Select an air purifying unit that uses activated carbon. Activated carbon is effective in clearing many airborne chemical found in salons - including VOCs and fumes from acetone (used in nail treatments) and ammonia (used in hair coloring).

5. Choose a purifier with a HEPA filter. HEPA stands for "High-Efficiency Particulate Air." HEPA filters are effective at clearing particulate matter from the air, including debris and particles from nail and hair treatments.

6. Buy an energy-efficient air filtration system. Run the air filter 24/7 to maintain good air quality in your salon. Energy costs can skyrocket if the unit is not efficient.
