Fibromyalgia is an immune system disorder characterized by fatigue, muscle pain, joint stiffness, headaches, sleeping difficulties and cognitive difficulties. This condition most commonly affects women and has no known cause or cure. Medications may be used to help treat the symptoms of fibromyalgia.
Analgesics and NSAIDS
Analgesics include over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol and prescription medications such as Ultram. These medications can help alleviate fibromyalgia pain. NSAIDs such as over-the-counter aspirin, Motrin, Advil and Aleve can also be used to treat muscle aches and headaches.
Tricyclic Antidepressants
Tricyclic antidepressants work by increasing the amount of norepinephrine active in the brain. Medications such as Cymbalta, Elavil and Pamelor can help relax sore muscles and help the body use endorphins more effectively as a natural pain killer. Also, these medications may help with sleep problems.
SSRIs
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are also a type of antidepressant. These medications increase the amount of serotonin active in the brain. The increased amount of serotonin can help reduce fatigue and pain associated with fibromyalgia. These medications include Paxil, Zoloft and Prozac. SSRIs and tricyclic medications may be used in combination with one another.
Other Medications
The muscle relaxer Flexeril may be used to improve the quality of sleep for fibromyalgia sufferers. Flexeril also may help ease muscle pain by reducing tension.
Antidepressants known as benzodiazepines can help to treat restless leg syndrome, muscle pain and sleep problems. These medications include Klonopin and Valium. These medications may only be prescribed temporarily because they are often habit-forming.
Many individuals with fibromyalgia have problems related to irritable bowel syndrome. Medications such as Zelnorm and Lotronex may help to control symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
