Treatment For Pmdd Disorder

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is an emotional and physical condition that affects about 5 percent of women during their menstrual cycles. It is considered to be a more severe form of premenstrual symptom, which affects about 75 percent of women. The symptoms of PMDD are similar to PMS, and they include depression, tension, anxiety, irritability and moodiness. A woman is more likely to have PMDD if the symptoms are disruptive to her life and keep her from doing her daily activities.


Diagnosis








There is no test that can diagnose definitively if someone has PMDD, so looking at levels of estrogen and progesterone will not show if someone has the disorder. Certain symptoms can give an indication of whether someone might have PMDD. The first four are severe depression, moodiness and a feeling of hopelessness; anxiety and/or tension; rapid mood shifts and persistent irritability and anger. At least one of these symptoms must be present for someone to be diagnosed with PMDD. Other symptoms of PMDD include difficulty is concentrating and staying focused; fatigue and a loss of energy; a change in appetite, including overeating and physical changes such as weight gain, bloating, headaches and muscle aches.


Medications


There are four drugs that are used specifically for the treatment of PMDD, which have been approved recently by the Federal Drug Administration. These medications are Sarafem, Paxil CR, Zoloft and YAZ. Sarafem is a form of Prozac, which has been used to help people with depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, bulimia and panic disorder. Those who are taking a MAO inhibitor should not take Sarafem because the two antidepressant drugs are dangerous if used together. Paxil CR has been used to treat depression, panic disorder and social anxiety disorder by controlling the amount of a chemical known as serotonin in the brain. This drug is meant for people over 18 years old because in some teens, antidepressants have been found to increase suicidal thoughts and behavior. Zoloft is an antidepressant that has been used to treat depression, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Those who take this medication with Nonsteroidal Antiinflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) and/or aspirin may have an increased risk of bleeding, and women should not take alcohol while on Zoloft. Yaz is a medication that has been used as birth control, but it has also been found to help with both emotional and physical symptoms of PMDD. Yaz contains two hormones, estrogen and drospirenone.


Side Effects


With all of the medications used for PMDD, there are serious side effects that women need to consider before taking the drugs. Side effects for Sarafem include abnormal ejaculation, a diminished sex drive, flu-like symptoms, gas, headaches, itchiness, tremors, rashes and impotence. Paxil CR has been found to be dangerous for pregnant women; clinical studies have found that babies of women taking antidepressants during later stages of pregnancy can experience problems such as difficulty breathing, seizures, changes in body temperature, feeding problems, vomiting, low blood sugar and constant crying. Some of the side effects for women taking Paxil CR are diarrhea, nausea, decreased appetite, dizziness, insomnia, sleepiness, abnormal vision and constipation. With Zoloft, some side effects may result from stopping the medication too early, including Serotonin Syndrome; fever; sweating; muscle stiffness; trouble thinking clearly; or changes in mental functioning, breathing, heartbeat or blood pressure. The drospirenone hormone in Yaz can increase the amount of potassium in the body, so it should not be used by women who have kidney, liver or adrenal disease, and could result in heart problems. Some of the side effects of Yaz include upper respiratory infections, breast pain, vaginal moniliasis, vaginitis, urinary tract infection, sinusitis, migraines and headaches, abdominal pain, intermenstral bleeding, a decreased libido, weight gain and pelvic pain.


Other Drugs


Along with antidepressants and birth control pills, there are other medications that have been prescribed for women with PMDD, including drugs with natural progesterone. The most common drug that fits in this category is Prometrium, although it has not been approved by the FDA for treatment of PMDD. This medication has commonly been prescribed for women who stop having their menstrual period before menopause, or for women going through hormone therapy after menopause. Some of the side effects of Prometrium include dizziness, breast pain, abdominal pain, chest pain or diarrhea. Women should not take this drug if they are pregnant or have a history of abnormal bleeding, liver disease, irregular blood clotting or breast cancer.


Therapy


Along with prescribed medications, PMDD sufferers have also found therapy to be helpful for some of the emotional symptoms that they experience. One type of therapy is cognitive behavioral therapy, which is based upon the idea that people's internal thoughts are responsible for the way that they feel and act. This type of therapy usually involves around 12 sessions, where the therapists help patients confront negative thoughts and develop coping mechanisms that help them to deal with these thoughts in their daily lives. Some women have also found relaxation therapy to be helpful; this type of therapy uses a variety of methods, including meditation and aromatherapy, to reduce both mental and physical pain.


Nutrition


Some women are able to combat PMDD in more natural ways, including changing their exercise routines and diets. Many PMDD sufferers have found that regular exercise three to five times a week can help relieve both the physical and mental symptoms of PMDD, including depression. Aerobic exercises such as walking, swimming and biking have been found to be helpful. Women with the disorder should try to limit the amount of alcohol, caffeine, sugar, salt and tobacco they consume, and increase the amount of carbohydrates, proteins, whole grains, fruits and vegetables in their diets. Multivitamins with nutrients such as vitamins B6 and E, calcium and magnesium have been found to be useful for women with PMS symptoms, if taken in low or moderate doses. Magnesium, for example, has helped with fluid retention, which many women experience during PMS.

Most females have had, at one time or another, feminine itching, odor and discharge. This is a condition known as a yeast infection. Some yeast infections are caused by taking a prescription medication with sulfa in it. Sulfa is an ingredient found in antibiotics. There are a couple of different types of yeast infection. The most common is caused by a bacteria called candida albicans. After you have read this article, you will know choose the right medicine for your infection.


Instructions


1. Get a confirmation on your condition. If it is your first yeast infection, you may want to consult your physician or OB-GYN before self medicating. After getting your confirmation, or if you already know what the problem is because you're experienced it before, go to your local drug store.


2. Walk to the feminine hygiene section and find the yeast infection medications. There are several different types, brands, and dosages. Some are one day treatments that sound like a good solution, but sometimes aren't. There are three day treatments and seven day treatments. The most commonly used are the one- and three-day treatments. Some of the medicines have the same active ingredient in them, so it doesn't really matter about the brand or type. You are looking for the one with a different active ingredient. This will be written on the side panel of the package.


3. Find the active ingredient panel. You are looking for an ingredient such as miconazol nitrate, trioconosol or clotrimazole. These are the active ingredients that kill the infection or fungus. You should be able to find at least three different active ingredients in the different medications.


4. Look for the most common ingredient, which is miconazol. It is the most widely used in this treatment; however, some yeast infections do not respond to it and you will have to try one of the other types of active ingredients. After using miconazol, if your infection isn't gone, return to the store and purchase one of the other medications with a different active ingredient. This is a trial and error method but once you find the correct medication, the next time you get one, you can start with the one that worked the last time.








5. Use the medication as the directions recommend. If you purchased a one- day treatment with additional cream for external use, use it just before going to be at night. For three day treatments and seven day treatments, use them at night as well and only as directed by the package.

Prevent Claw Toes

A claw toe is a term used to describe a toe that adopts a claw position. It often affects the third, fourth or fifth toes in one or both feet. The deformity makes it difficult to fit into some shoes and the affected toes can become painful. Claw toes can be treated and corrected in some cases. However, it is best to prevent the problem from occurring in the first place. By following these steps you may be able to prevent claw toes.


Instructions








1. Avoid shoes that are too narrow, short, or high heeled. These styles of shoe will cause a great deal of pressure on the toes and can cause the toes to become clawed. Excessive shoe pressure will also make an existing claw toe painful and can exacerbate the deformity.


2. Stay away from loose or slip on style shoes as the toes will claw up in order to grip the shoe and hold it on. Try to wear shoes with a lace or a strap when you plan on being on your feet for long periods. Keep fashion or dress shoes for special occasions or for days when you will not be on your feet a great deal.


3. Make sure that your shoes fit both feet correctly. Most people will have one foot that is larger than the other. In some cases there may be a whole shoe size difference between each foot. Always fit the larger foot as you can pad out the other shoe for the smaller foot with an insert. Never buy shoes to fit the smaller foot and then squeeze your larger foot into a shoe. Have your feet measured professionally before you purchase shoes.


4. Hold the claw toe between your thumb and index finger and gently move the toe into a straight position. Hold for a few seconds and repeat. Do not force the toe. Try splaying the toes to stretch out any tight tendons.


5. Seek the help of your podiatrist who may suggest orthotics. Claw toes are often a result of a functional problem with your foot such as a foot that excessively pronates (rolls in) or a structural problem, such as Pes Cavus (a high arched foot).


6. Consider surgery if the toe becomes very problematic. Your podiatrist can explain the procedure to you.

Perform A Liver Flush! Get Rid Of Gallstones!

Dinner: Have grapefruit juice only for your meal.








3. Bedtime: Drink 1/2 cup of warm unrefined olive oil with 1/2 fresh lemon juice.


Go directly to bed. Lie on your right side with your knees pulled close to your chest for 30 minutes. Nausea is common, but this will pass.


4. Next Morning! (Sunday!) One hour before breakfast, take 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt dissolved in 1/4 cup warm water.


You may then return to your normal eating schedule.


Your next bowel movement you will see small gallstones in the toilet. They are light to dark green in color and sized from tiny sesame seeds to about the size of a large pea. If you see a lot of stones repeat the flush in about a month! This liver flush should be done once a year.


After a flush make sure you keep the fiber flowing in your diet or your bowels might become a little sluggish.

The Body Detox Method

How Does Detoxification Work?

Uterine Cancer Chemotherapy Side Effects

The best phlebotomy techniques actually begin when you receive the order. Organize the regular draws in a logical fashion. Make sure you have any necessary supplies on hand and in sufficient quantities. Any special transport equipment, like refrigeration, should be prepared and on hand. The more organized you are, the more efficiently you will work, and the higher the quality of your work will be.


At Venipuncture


At the time of venipuncture, you have two competing priorities: quality sample procurement, and patient comfort. Keep both in mind and maximize both as much as possible. Follow the guidelines of your facility for proper patient identification. Place your tourniquet high enough on the arm not to interfere with the draw, and remove it as quickly as you can. A tourniquet left in place too long is not only uncomfortable, but can also skew test results. Strongly adhere to protocols for the order of draw; it is possible to contaminate one tube with the additives from another, negatively affecting test results. Use only good puncture techniques to avoid undue trauma to the patient and sample. Rock the tubes as soon as the draw is complete to insure complete mixing. Follow the guidelines of your facility for proper tube and test labeling and ordering.








After Venipuncture


Return all samples to the lab as quickly as possible. Follow any special transport instructions exactly. Each lab has its own system for logging in samples; be sure to follow log in protocols exactly. If you are to spin the tubes, be familiar with the centrifuge. If you are to log samples and turn them over to a tech, do just that, calling their attention to any stat orders or special directions.

Prostatitis, know also as a prostate infection, is the term used to describe a number of conditions that all share similar symptoms. Treatment is dependent on the cause of the infection, and can include medications such as antibiotics, prostate massage and alternative medicine.


Types and Symptoms


The National Institute of Health (NIH) breaks prostatitis into four categories: acute and chronic bacterial prostatitis, chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain and asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis. bacterial prostatitis is caused by a bacterial infection, and chronic prostatitis has no single identifiable cause, though possible theories include a stressed immune system or a nervous disorder. Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis has no known cause, and not much is known about it, making it difficult to treat.








Symptoms are generally type-specific, though they all (except for asymptomatic prostatitis) share a number of commonalities. These include pain in the groin and pelvic area, including the testicles, penis, and space between rectum and scrotum (perineum); pain when urinating and ejaculating; and alternating bouts of frequent urination, especially at night, and difficulty urinating.


Bacterial infections include flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills and fatigue, with frequent urinary tract infections serving as the main indicator of a chronic bacterial infection. In the event of chronic prostatitis or pelvic pain, the symptoms last for longer than three months and may go away and return without warning. Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis presents with no symptoms and is found through a routine examination.


Bacterial Infection Treatment








Treatment for a prostate infection that's bacterial in nature requires antibiotics. If the infection is severe, injections of antibiotics given at the hospital are typically required. Once the symptoms begin to clear up, oral antibiotics are taken for approximately two to four weeks. Should the infection become chronic, wherein the bacteria finds a spot on the prostate suitable for survival, treatment for up to six months may be necessary.


Chronic and Asymptomatic Prostatitis Treatment


Given the unknown cause of chronic prostatitis, effective treatment is much more difficult, primarily involving symptom management. Possible treatments can include alpha blockers such as alfusozin and doxasozin, which work by relaxing the muscles of the bladder and the area where the bladder meets the prostate to alleviate symptoms such as painful urination. Although effective, side effects such as headaches and lowered blood pressure may occur. Prostate massage, wherein the doctor manually stimulates the prostate with a gloved finger, may provide some relief as well. A study published in "Therapeutics and Clinical Risk Management" that analyzed current prostatitis treatments concluded that prostate massage and frequent ejaculation were an effective treatment for the three symptomatic types of prostatitis.


Over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen may help alleviate inflammation and pain, but this is at best a short-term treatment.


Asymptomatic prostatitis does not require treatment.


Lifestyle and Alternative Treatment


A number of lifestyle treatments can help alleviate symptoms, though they are by no means an effective way to eliminate the infection entirely. Taking a warm bath and sitting on a soft cushion may help alleviate pain, while avoiding alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods can help alleviate pressure in the pelvic and abdominal areas.


Alternative treatments include biofeedback and acupuncture, though their efficacy is up for debate. Biofeedback involves being hooked up to a machine that helps you pinpoint certain movements that may exacerbate the pain. This in turn allows you to control the pain.


The ancient Chinese therapy known as acupuncture is thought to reduce pain caused by literally dozens of ailments. It is thought that when the energy of the body, the "chi," is out of alignment, the body reacts in a variety of ways. Acupuncture thus involves the strategic placement of extra-fine needles into the skin at varying depths to align the chi.

It will likely be embarrassing, but can also be a learning experience. Imagine the worst case scenario. Plan for what you will do if things do not go as planned. 7. Become an actor. Sometimes acting as if you are confident is helpful. If you act like you are not shy it will help you to become less inhibited. Try to imitate someone that you feel is confident and attempt to take on that individuals characteristics. Sometimes being shy is the fear of not being accepted for who you are. If you can act as someone else, that fear may dissipate to some degree.


8. Smile and ask questions when you feel you cannot come up with any conversation. People love to talk about themselves. Know basic questions that will break the ice such as "what kind of work do you do," "do you have any children," "where are you from," "what school do/did you attend," "have you seen any good movies lately," "what sort of music do you like," etc. Plan these questions ahead of time so you do not get stuck in conversation.

Charcoal is impure porous carbon, usually made from vegetable sources like wood. In the U.S., the majority of charcoal is made into fuel for barbeques. The ingredients in charcoal ash are not only carbon. This ash also contains traces of other substances, such as oxides and carbonates of metals, derived from the original material used to make the charcoal.


Calcium Carbonate


Charcoal ash contains approximately 25 percent calcium carbonate, or CaCO3. It's a salt which occurs naturally in chalk or limestone and is also found in the shells of sea creatures, eggshells and snail shells. Medicinally, calcium carbonate is used as an antacid. This substance is also used as an agricultural liming agent, or one which increases the alkalinity of soil. It's often used to amend soil which is too acidic. Charcoal ashes derived from spent barbeque fuel containing no chemical accelerators can benefit soil in small to medium sized doses, depending on the soil's original acid or alkaline state.








Potash


Potash is the common name given to K2 CO3, or potassium carbonate. Potash makes up less than 10 percent of wood ash. Deposits of potash are mined in Canada, Russia and Belarus. It's found in the coats of sheep and in plants such as wormwood, sage brush and fumitory. This substance is used in soap-making and as agricultural fertilizer. Charcoal ash containing potash is used to enrich soil, it provides a boost to photosynthesis and aids the movement of nutrients and seed formation.


Phosphate


Phosphate is a salt of phosphoric acid found in small amounts in charcoal ash. Phosphates are vital minerals for plant growth and essential to human health. Fertilizers containing phosphates increases the pH of soil, making it more acidic, in order to temporarily boost plant growth by speeding up the absorption of nutrients. For commercial use, phosphates are made from phosphorous, a naturally occurring mineral. An estimated 90 percent of mined phosphorus is used for agricultural fertilizers, the remainder goes into the production of supplements for livestock and products such as soft drinks and toothpaste.


Borax


Small amounts of the mineral borax are present in charcoal ash. Borax is a salt used in the commercial production of cosmetics and medicines. It's also frequently added to charcoal briquettes and not a natural occurring substance from the wood used to make the charcoal. This additive aids fuel briquettes retain their shape as they emerge from the molds. Borax is a non-toxic mineral containing the substances sodium and boron. Small amounts of borax are essential for healthy plant growth.

Instructions


Steam Method: For Migraine Headaches from Sinus Congestion


1. Add 3 drops of peppermint oil into a bowl of boiling water.


2. Lean gently over the bowl. Close your eyes and drape the towel over your head to keep the steam from escaping.


3. Inhale the peppermint vapors from the bowl. The vapors will begin to provide relief to your migraine and your sinuses. If they do not, add another drop or two of peppermint oil to the hot water.


Massage: For Chronic Migraine Headaches


4. Dab a drop of peppermint oil onto the tip of your finger. Massage the peppermint oil into the temples and the forehead first, gently. Be careful not to get the oil near or in the eyes, as the oil may cause the eyes to tear and burn.


5. Massage the oil into the back of the jawline, the base of the neck and behind the ears.


6. Lay back in a comfortable position in a quiet room and place a cool cloth compress behind your neck and on your forehead. Remain relaxed in this position until the headache eases. Once you rise and begin your regular routine, continue placing the peppermint on the aboved mentioned areas gently, until the migraine has completely dissolved.

7. Add 12-15 drops of peppermint oil to warm bathtub water.








8. Soak in the water for about 30 minutes, inhaling the peppermint vapors.


9. Place a cold compress cloth to your forehead while relaxing in the tub until the migraine fades.

Manuka Honey Cures

Manuka honey, a type of honey derived from New Zealand's native Manuka plant, is an ancient treatment for infected wounds. Numerous scientific studies have been done regarding its anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. New research suggests that preparations containing Manuka honey may be effective at controlling periodontal disease. The only condition that has been scientifically proven to be cured by the use of Manuka honey is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) wound infections.


MRSA


Manuka honey is scientifically proven to be an effective treatment for MRSA infected wounds. The treatment of using Manuka honey has been extensively clinically studied and has been effective for complete eradication of the MRSA bacteria in every study found. One of the studies, done by the University of Wales College of Medicine, included an immunosuppressed patient with leg ulcers colonized with MRSA. A Manuka honey dressing fully eradicated MRSA from the ulcer. In addition, wound healing was increased.








Periodontal Disease








Current research indicates that Manuka honey as sweetner may reduce gingivitis and resulting periodontal disease. Although the study was done with a small group of volunteers, there was a highly significant statistical difference between the two groups tested. While currently not a cure for gingivitis and periodontal disease, future studies with varying concentrations may prove that using Manuka honey as a sweetener is beneficial as an adjunctive therapy to reduce periodontal disease.


Misconceptions


There are claims that Manuka honey is a cure for a large range of bacterial, viral and fungal infections. However, the only extensively studied use for Manuka honey as a true cure has been in relation to MRSA. When considering to use Manuka honey as a treatment or cure for any condition, be sure to look for actual facts to back up the information. New studies are reaching completion on a regular basis, so studies on related uses of Manuka honey may be available in the future. However, Manuka honey is not the only honey that has curative properties. Some types of honey contain enzymes that are more effective at controlling different pathogens than the enzymes in Manuka honey. When researching honey as a cure, be sure to pay attention to which type of honey was used in the study.

Treating Strep Throat

Strep throat is a common contagious illness caused by streptococcal bacteria. Unlike many sore throats, which are usually caused by a virus, strep throat often requires medical attention.


Strep throat can cause serious illness if it is not properly treated. Because of this, it was once common for doctors to treat a sore throat as strep throat before tests had confirmed the diagnosis. Now, faster tests and concern about misuse of antibiotics (which can cause resistant strains of bacteria) mean you won't be put on antibiotics until a doctor confirms you have strep.


Identification


Initial signs of strep throat vary but usually you will have a very sore throat and fever. Swallowing may be difficult or painful and you may feel generally unwell. If you look at your throat in the mirror, you may notice redness, inflammation, and white/yellow pus pockets on the tonsils and back of the throat. You may also notice a foul odor.


Your doctor will give you a rapid strep test (which gives results in a few minutes) and may also take a throat culture to confirm the diagnosis. (Throat cultures give results in one to two days.)


Types


Since bacteria cause strep throat, treatment includes antibiotics. Penicillin has long been the preferred antibiotic for killing streptococcal bacteria. If you are allergic to penicillin, your doctor may instead prescribe erythromycin or another kind of antibiotic.








Along with taking prescribed antibiotics, there are many things you can do to assist recovery. You should avoid abrasive, throat-irritating foods. Instead, eat puddings and ice cream and drink nutritional drinks. These will provide calories and nutrition while the throat heals from infection.


Fruit juices are beneficial but the citric acid in orange juice, grapefruit juice and lemonade may irritate the throat. Grape or apple juice is better for people ill with strep throat.


Popsicles are excellent treatment for strep throat. The Popsicle numbs the throat and provides fluids.


Pain relievers will help with throat pain and inflammation. Analgesic throat sprays also provide temporary relief from strep throat pain.


Adults and teens with strep throat may also gargle with warm salt water a few times a day. Salt water helps cleanse and soothe the throat, and provides an aseptic environment that deters bacteria.


Prevention/Solution


Strep is highly contagious and remains contagious until at least a day or two after antibiotic treatment has begun. Prevent Strep throat from spreading by washing your hands frequently and disinfecting hard surfaces, such as doorknobs, counters, or anything else an ill person has touched.


Warning


Strep throat can progress to rheumatic fever, a serious disease with long-term, even deadly, effects. Rheumatic fever can permanently damage heart valves.


No matter how much better you may feel, always finish the entire course of antibiotics unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Stopping antibiotics prematurely may cause a severe relapse and create antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.


Considerations








Ask your doctor what pain medicines she recommends for children. You should not give children under 18 aspirin because they could develop Reyes syndrome.

Definition Of Hmo







HMOs have grown to fill a major place in providing health care to Americans. However, the basic issues of what constitutes an HMO (the HMO is often confused with the clinics that are operated by them) and how they work, remain an enigma, even to people who are part of an HMO.


Identification


Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) are a form of Managed Care Organizations. Under its terms, the HMO agrees to provide health insurance coverage to consumers through hospitals, clinics, doctors and other providers with whom they have a contract. This is the main distinction between an HMO and a traditional insurance policy; under the terms of the HMO, only providers that have already agreed to work under the HMOs terms can provide health care.


History


HMOs or HMO precursors actually have a long history in the United States, dating back to the early 20th Century. However, they were never very popular and had always been small and strictly localized organizations. All of this changed when Paul Ellwood began working with the US Deppartment of Health and Human Services on introducing what became the HMO Act of 1973. This act had three key provisions: 1) financial aid was provided to plan, start or expand an HMO; 2) selected state-imposed restrictions on HMOs were eliminated if the HMOs became federally certified; 3) employers with 25 or more employees were required to offer federally certified HMO options alongside indemnity upon request. The third key provision was the most important, since it guaranteed access to the lucrative employer-offered health insurance plan market for federally certified HMOs.


Types


There are a few basic types of HMOs. In the staff model, doctors are salaried employees of the HMO. The group model involves the HMO working with a middle man, who in turn employs doctors. This can either be a "captive" multi-specialty group practice, where both the middleman group and the doctors work entirely for the HMO, or an Independent Practice Association, where both the group and its contracted doctors are free to accept patients and contracts outside the HMO. Finally, there is the network model, which combines elements of the other two models.


Misconceptions


It is often very hard to tell what model an HMO follows just by looking at it, even if you are a member. For example, Kaiser Permanente is often thought of as a staff model HMO, but it is actually using the "captive" group model.


Function


When a person joins a HMO, they are often required to select a Primary Care Physician (PCP), or have one assigned to them. The PCP is the consumer's "gatekeeper," or person who evaluates their needs and access to health care. Outside of emergency situations, all access to health care will require a referral from the PCP.


HMOs often prefer low cost; preventative medicine over high cost later treatments, and design their guidelines and contracts to encourage this approach. They also monitor their contracted heath care providers to see who is providing how much and what kind of care, with an eye on keeping them inside the guidelines for providing care. Some HMOs also require that their health care providers give the absolute minimum necessary care to control costs and ensure profits.

Lymph nodes, small bean-like glands surrounded by tissue, are located throughout the human body along the lymphatic system. When they are functioning normally, lymph nodes filter bacteria and toxins from the lymph fluid in the body. When cancer strikes the lymphatic system, the lymph nodes suffer, and the cancer patient may experience one or more common symptoms. Lymph node cancer (lymphoma) generally fits into one of two categories, Hodgkin's disease or Non-Hodgkin's disease. The symptoms of both are similar.


Swollen nodes


One of the earliest noticeable symptoms of lymph node cancer involves the swelling of the individual lymph glands. In parts of the body where the lymph nodes are near the skin's surface, including the sides of the neck, the armpits and the groin area, they may feel like enlarged bumps or lumps that may or may not be tender to the touch. Although swollen lymph nodes are a symptom of numerous disorders, they should be brought to the attention of a doctor.


Pain


A generalized tenderness in the area of a swollen lymph node may occur during the early stages of lymph node cancer, before symptoms that are more serious appear. The pain may increase after drinking alcohol. As the cancer progresses, lymph nodes in the abdomen may cause pain in the spleen may swell, creating tenderness in the abdomen and a feeling of fullness.


Appetite and Weight loss


The loss of appetite and the subsequent loss of weight are common with the progression of lymph node cancer. However, these symptoms are common in many medical disorders, and a physician should examine the patient to rule out another condition.


Additional symptoms


The cancer patient may suffer from additional symptoms when lymph node cancer strikes. Unexplained lethargy or fatigue is common, and the patient may run a low-grade fever, resulting in night sweats and chills. Some patients may experience itching that is not relieved by topical anti-itch creams. Chest pain and coughing may accompany lymph node cancer if the lymph glands within the chest are affected.


Diagnosis


Since the lymphatic system is involved in many other medical conditions, a doctor must order blood tests and conduct a physical exam before making a diagnosis. He may also take X-rays of the chest and abdomen and perform a biopsy of a swollen lymph node.

3. Learn American Sign Language by obtaining a simple book of signs or finding ASL sites on the Internet. Begin with very simple signs and gestures. Words for family, common needs and daily objects or activities will go a long way. Good words to teach first are: mom, dad, eat, drink, all done, more, hot, happy, sad, sorry and please.


4. Begin using signs every time you do something or want to communicate something to your child. You don't have to be fluent in ASL to do this. Just add the signs you know as you go about your daily activities. Your child will watch you carefully and them up quickly.








5. Watch for your child to begin using signs. Keep in mind that a child's signs can be similar to a young child's speech--it may be a little different from what you have modeled. Remember that the important thing is that you are communicating. It is not important that your child do the signs perfectly.


6. Continue to add signs each day and as you encounter more activities or objects that your child needs to know the words for. Keep building your own vocabulary so that you can stay ahead of your child and provide the words that she needs to talk about her world.
