What Causes Cornea Swelling After Cataract Surgery

Swelling of the cornea is not uncommon after cataract surgery.

Cornea swelling after cataract surgery occurs in about five percent of patients. The cornea is the clear front covering of the eye. Fluid that normally keeps the eye lubricated can build up beneath the cornea after cataract surgery, causing swelling of the cornea (corneal edema) to occur. Symptoms can be quite similar to the symptoms of cataracts. These symptoms can include pain in the eye, light sensitivity (photophobia), the feeling of having a foreign object in the eye, seeing halos around sources of light, and poor vision---especially after waking.

Infection

During or after surgery, bacteria can cause infection to develop within the eye. Infection does not necessarily mean that surgery was conducted in unhygienic surroundings: Patients may be naturally susceptible to infection through low immunity. Exposing the eye to water from the faucet while showering or washing your face can also cause infection. Because of this, every care should be taken to ensure water does not get into the eye when washing. Your doctor may give you an eye shield to prevent rubbing the eye when asleep. The sutures used in cataract surgery may also cause infection of the cornea.

Mechanical Injury

Mechanical injury occurs when something physically hurts the cornea. This may happen when the patient accidentally injures the eye in some way---being hit with a ball while playing sports, for example, or scratching the eye with a nail. Irritation may occur, causing the cornea to swell.

Chemical Irritation

Exposing the eye to chemicals can cause irritation and swelling. Patients should avoid using make up, such as mascara, eye liner and eyeshadow, while recovering from cataract surgery and should be careful not to get soap or shampoo in the eye while bathing. Substances such as the medication amantadine, commonly used to treat Parkinson's disease, or chlorhexidine, which is used in many mouthwashes and skin cleansers, can cause corneal edema.

Eye Disease

Certain eye diseases that are present at the same time as cataract surgery can cause the cornea to swell. Fuch's endothelial dystrophy is the most common of these and is known to cause corneal edema. With Fuch's dystrophy, fluid does not drain from the eye as it should. The fluid builds up, causing the cornea to swell.

Treatment

Surgery may be unavoidable if the swelling is severe.

Treatment for cornea swelling after cataract surgery varies depending on the severity of the swelling. A doctor may prescribe eye drops, which will encourage any fluid trapped behind the cornea into tears. If the edema is more severe or if blisters are present (common with Fuch's endothelial dystrophy), a corneal transplant may be necessary.

Multiple Myeloma Diagnosis

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that can develop in the bone marrow in multiple places in an individual, hence the name. Multiple myeloma comes with symptoms such as anemia and bone pain. According to the Mayo Clinic, the disease can cause erosion of the bones. A diagnosis of multiple myeloma is reached through various tests.

Blood protein tests

Multiple myeloma is capable of producing high amounts of certain proteins in the blood. The National Cancer Institute states that these proteins can be detected by blood tests, which can lead to a successful diagnosis of the ailment.

Anemia and calcium

When the cancer results in lowered levels of white blood cells then anemia can affect the patient. Lab tests that can determine these levels as well as heightened levels of calcium as the bones are affected can aid in the diagnosis of multiple myeloma.

Urine tests

Urine tests that look for a specific protein called Bence Jones protein over a span of 24 hours can alert a physician to the presence of multiple myeloma. This is important since these proteins can adversely affect the kidneys.

Imaging tests

If multiple myeloma is suspected, X-rays can be taken to reveal any thinning bones. Possible fractures can also be found and imaging exams such as CT scans and MRIs can be employed to look for bone problems.

Biopsy

A bone marrow biopsy is the definitive test that diagnoses multiple myeloma. These biopsies can be done with thick hollowed needles that can remove samples of bone as well as bone marrow that are then examined for cancerous cells.

Blood Sugar Numbers In Diabetics

Blood sugar levels, also known as blood glucose levels, are a measure of the amount of sugar, or glucose, in a person's blood. For a person with diabetes, these numbers are crucial and often monitored several times a day.

Definition

Glucose is measured in milligrams per deciliter, or mg/dL. Mg represents the amount of glucose sugar and dL represents 1 deciliter of blood.

Test

Most diabetics use small hand-held devices called monitors or meters. A small prick on the finger or arm produces enough blood for the device to measure their sugar levels. Some people use small lasers that can pierce the skin while others take advantage of monitoring systems that are attached to their bodies to constantly measure blood sugar levels.

Pre-meal Levels

Generally speaking, blood sugar levels of a person who has not eaten a meal yet in the day should be somewhere between 80mg/dL and 130mg/dL, though this number can vary by person.

Post-meal Levels

After a meal or snack, blood sugar levels naturally rise but should generally stay below 180mg/dL or less, depending on the person and the meal.

Fluctuations

Just as people are unique, so are their glucose levels. This is why there are ranges of blood glucose levels and not static numbers. Diabetics also have a variety of conditions unique to themselves. Only a physician can determine the right blood glucose levels for an individual diabetic.

Perform The Fetal Kick Count

During pregnancy, there is one non-invasive test you can do yourself at home to check on the baby's health. This is called a Kick Count and basically measures the baby's movements. When a baby moves around enough this is a good indicator that a baby is healthy. The idea is to feel your baby move 10 times within two hours. By following these simple steps you can perform a fetal kick count at home and monitor your baby's well being.

Instructions

1. Set aside a time of day that you can sit down and observe your baby's movements. It helps if you set aside the same time each day. Try to pick the time when your baby is most active.

2. Eat or drink something before starting the kick count, as this will often make your baby more active. Keep ice water or juice next to where you will be sitting so you can sip on it to help rouse the baby if needed.

3. Do some light exercises or take a walk before beginning. This too can help wake a baby.

4. Find a comfortable position. You might want to sit with your feet up or lie on your left side. Lying on your left side allows more blood to circulate to your baby, causing the baby to be more active.

5. Mark the time that you begin counting movements. When you feel the 10th movement mark the time and after several days you can go back and look at the pattern. You will get an idea of how long it normally takes for your baby to move 10 times.

Avoid A Root Canal

Teeth that have undergone a root canal will generally last as long as your natural teeth.

Beneath the enamel of your teeth is a pulp chamber that contains tissue, blood vessels and nerves. Extending from the pulp chamber down into the roots are two pulp canals that extend to the end of the roots and connect with the surrounding tissues underneath. When the pulp inside these canals becomes inflamed or infected, a procedure called a root canal is necessary to prevent the development of an abscess. Avoiding this painful procedure is a simple matter of taking good care of your teeth.

Causes of Inflammation and Infection of the Pulp

Without proper treatment, cavities and gum disease, such as gingivitis, may lead to deep decay, which can cause inflammation or infection of the pulp. To prevent both cavities and gum disease, practicing good oral hygiene and receiving regular dental checkups are essential. Damaged teeth and teeth that have undergone repeated dental procedures are at a higher risk of developing infections and inflammation of the pulp.

Symptoms of Inflamed or Infected Pulp

Signs that the pulp inside the roots is inflamed or infected include sensitivity to heat and cold, pain when chewing, discoloration of the enamel, swollen and tender lymph nodes and sensitivity in the bones and tissues around the affected tooth. Sometimes no symptoms are present at all, which is one reason a twice-yearly visit to your dentist is an important preventative measure.

The Root Canal Procedure

If your dentist suspects that you need a root canal, she will refer you to an endodontist, who will examine and X-ray the tooth. After administering a local anesthetic to the area, the endodontist will make a cut in the crown of the tooth and insert a very small instrument into the pulp chamber and canals and remove the infected or inflamed pulp. The chamber and canals are then filled with a rubber-like substance called gutta-percha. A temporary filling is placed in the hole in the tooth to protect it until you can return to your dentist to have a permanent crown placed on the tooth.

What You Can Do at Home to Avoid a Root Canal

Practicing good oral hygiene is the best way to avoid a root canal. Brush your teeth twice a day. Gentle brushing for two to three minutes is ideal; hold the toothbrush at a slight angle against your teeth and thoroughly brush the gums where they meet the teeth. Floss at least once a day to remove food particles and plaque from between your teeth to avoid excessive bacteria in those areas. Visit your dentist every six months for a checkup to ensure that any problems are detected early.

Root Canal Alternatives

If your dentist says that a root canal is in order, you can first try one of a few alternatives to the traditional invasive procedure. Some endodontists use lasers to vaporize the infected or inflamed pulp, leaving the healthy pulp intact, which substantially reduces the pain and healing time. The down-side is that laser root canals are generally not covered by insurance and can cost anywhere from $500 to $1,000 out of pocket at the time of publication. Another option is an experimental treatment called oxygen-ozone therapy. Since bacteria can't survive in oxygen, a cocktail of oxygen/ozone is infused into the tooth to kill the infection without surgery of any kind. A homeopathic alternative to a root canal involves temporarily changing your diet to eliminate processed sugar and flour, consume raw milk, butter and fish, and apply goldenseal powder to the affected tooth and gum until the infection subsides.

The Signs & Symptoms Of A Pulled Muscle In The Chest

A pulled chest muscle is usually the result of a rigorous workout or improper lifting techniques. The pain can be very mild to extreme. This article will help you determine if you have a pulled chest muscle by going through the most common symptoms of this type of injury.

Soreness

The first sign of a pulled chest muscle is soreness. When the muscle is touched, the pain will become greater. The feeling could be compared to that of a bruise. In a more serious muscle tear, the pain may be intense even when you are not touching it.

Stiffening

Stiffness is a noticeable symptom of a pulled chest muscle. You will notice the affected muscle will feel more tense than normal. Since some chest muscles are used to move your arms, your arm movement will be limited to some extent. This is perhaps the longest lasting symptom and can last over two weeks.

Swelling

Swelling will occur with most pulled muscles. If the strain is minor, the swelling will not be obvious. A severely strained muscle will have visible signs of swelling. In the case of severe swelling, it is important to see a doctor to ensure there will be no lasting damage to the muscle.

Weakening

During the healing process, the muscle becomes weaker than normal. Like with the other symptoms, the worse the injury is, the more noticeable the symptom will be. When you pull a muscle, you actually have several little tears in it. It isn't until each tear is repaired that you will have your full strength back.

Bruising

Bruising typically only occurs in the most severely pulled muscles. The bruise could show up as anything from a slight discoloration on your skin to a deep purple color. These usually appear within two days of the initial muscle strain.

Threeday Body Detox Diet

The three-day detox diet is used by people who are attempting to flush toxins from their system. Doctors may also recommend this plan for extremely obese patients. Some people mistakenly confuse the three-day detox diet with a liquid diet. In this diet, however, solid food is not only allowed but encouraged, Still, anyone choosing to go on this plan should consult with a doctor first.

Basics

Detox diets are typically used to help protect the liver from the buildup of toxins. Toxins from food and even air can pollute the body and, over time, flood our organs and cause damage to the liver. The three-day detox has been called an effective way to flush such poisons out of out system. On the downside, temporary side effects may include headache, nausea and diarrhea.

Plan

Not surprisingly, the three-day detox diet consists of drinking plenty of water -- anywhere from 10 to 12 glasses per day. Water contains essential minerals and is beneficial to all the body's organs. It assists the function of the liver, the kidneys, the heart and digestive system. Other than water, the diet consists of steamed vegetables and fresh organic fruit. A limited amount of brown rice is also permitted.

Pre- and Post-Diet

While it's called the three-day detox diet, there is actually some preparation and dieting required around the three days, making the entire plan last longer than a week. Anyone getting ready to start the diet should eliminate alcohol, caffeine and junk foods entirely for up to three days in advance. Once the detox portion is complete, you should continue to eat lightly and make healthy choices for another two or three days.

Guidelines

During the main phase of the three-day detox, eat only raw or organic fruits and vegetables, avoiding those that have been canned or frozen. The latter typically contain too much sugar and sodium. Also, all drinking water should be filtered, and the diet should be accompanied by some form of exercise, preferably 30 minutes in each of the three days.

Conclusion

The three-day detox diet is a good way to not only rid the body of toxins, but assist with weight loss and increase energy levels. It is not recommended for the long-term, as it lacks protein and falls well short of the daily recommended caloric intake. However, it does effectively cleanse the system and promote healthy eating for the long run.

Best Methods For Whitening Teeth

Whitening teeth has become a big part of the personal care industry. Many teeth whitening treatments are now within the reach of most people who want a brighter smile. In many cases teeth become stained from foods, beverages, smoking and some medications. Teeth whitening methods really remove the stains from the surface of the teeth as opposed to actually whitening them. Good teeth whitening products are available for every budget so it is possible for everyone to have whiter teeth.

Seeing a Dentist

The best and fastest methods for whitening teeth are usually performed by cosmetic dentists. While a dentist can make a dramatic improvement in the color of your teeth, these methods are also the most costly. Dentists can bleach the teeth using strong bleaching agents. According to Oral Health Guide, "These products can be used in combination with heat, a special light, and/or a laser. The light and/or heat accelerate the whitening process." The Oral Health Guide states that whitening methods used by dentists can lighten the teeth by up to 8 shades. You will see noticeable results after the first treatment.

Try Whitening Gels and Whitening Strips

There are whitening gels on the market that use a small brush to apply the bleaching gel to each tooth. These products are usually used twice a day for 1 to 2 weeks. Whitening strips are coated with a whitening agent, usually peroxide. The strips are thin and almost invisible and wrap around the fronts of your top and bottom teeth. The strips stay on for 30 minutes, twice a day for 2 weeks. With gels and strips you will notice results in a few days.

Consider Whitening Trays

Whitening trays are a more involved method of removing stains from the teeth. There is more diversity when using whitening trays. You can buy these trays from your dentist or in a drugstore. With this method a whitening gel or bleaching agent is placed in a mouth guard that fits around your teeth. Some trays are worn for a few hours every day while others are worn overnight. The duration can last for up to one month. The longer you use the whitening tray, the whiter your teeth become.

Use Magnets In Health

Proponents of the use of magnets in health care maintain that magnetic therapy can relieve pain, reduce inflammations and infections, help increase blood circulation, and increase energy. There is a significant body of research that indicates that use of magnets is a positive therapeutic tool for health care management. In particular, use of magnets seems to be particularly effective in treating chronic ailments. Practitioners of magnetic therapy work in conjunction with conventional medicine. They insist on a correct diagnosis before starting magnet use, which can mask symptoms that may need other kinds of treatment.

Instructions

1. Learn about the basics of magnet therapy. There are books available (such as "Pain-Free with Magnet Therapy: Discover How Magnets Can Help Relieve Arthritis, Sports Injuries, Fibromyalgia, and Chronic Pain"), web courses and tutorials.

2. Look up the suggested approach for using magnets for each individual health issue. If there is not enough information available online or in literature about magnetic therapy, consider consulting a practitioner of magnetic therapy. Therapists can be found online. Training institutes may also be able to refer practitioners in various parts of the country. Chiropractors, osteopaths and doctors of Chinese medicine also frequently use magnetic therapy in their practices, so these professionals can also be contacted.

3. Purchase magnets to be used for magnetic therapy. There are magnets of different sizes and shapes that are used for different ailments. Some magnets are applied for short amounts of time, and some are worn for longer periods. In addition, magnets are used in various ways during therapy, and each method requires a different magnet. The decision about the size and variety of magnets that are needed is dependent on the specific health issue being treated.

Alternative Treatment Of Osteoarthritis In The Hip

Some experts question whether conventional treatments, including drugs and surgical procedures, do more harm than good; in fact accelerating joint deterioration in the long run. As a result, there has been a great deal of research done in recent years on alternative treatments for osteoarthritis of the hip.

Glucosamine Sulfate

Glucosamine is a naturally occurring substance found in the human joint structure, which taken orally may help to prevent cartilage degeneration in the hip and osteoarthritis. "Numerous double-blind studies have shown glucosamine sulfate to yield as good as or even better results compared to NSAIDs [non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs] in relieving the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis," says Michael Murray, ND. Glucosamine also offers the benefit of fewer side effects than NSAIDs, and its efficacy continues to increase the longer it is used.

Exercise

Exercise is one of the most accessible and effective treatments for osteoarthritis of the hips. Regular exercise decreases pain and increases flexibility, and it increases blood flow to the hip joint, which allows for added cellular renewal and repair. Those suffering from osteoarthritis of the hip should see a doctor or physical therapist before engaging in an exercise program to assess the level and type of exercise needed.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to treat scores of chronic health issues. The insertion of tiny needles into pressure points under the skin can help relieve pain and inflammation and increase blood flow to the hip joint so that cellular renewal and repair can take place. Acupuncture has no side effects and can be used as a long-term treatment, whereas medication and surgery are only short-term solutions.

Herbal Supplements

There has been a great deal of promising evidence regarding the use of herbal supplements to treat osteoarthritis. According to L. Long, K. Soeken1 and E. Ernst in "Herbal medicines for the treatment of osteoarthritis: a systematic review," articuln-F, avocado/soybean unsaponifiables, capsaicin (from chili peppers), devil's claw, eazmov, ginger, stinging nettle and willow bark, among others, have all been found in studies to be effective at treating symptoms of osteoarthritis when taken orally or used in a topical cream. The greatest benefit of herbal remedies is that there are no side effects if taken within the prescribed limits, and treatment can continue indefinitely.

Person Calculate A Body Fat Percentage

Why Calculating Body Fat Percentage is Important

Calculating your body fat percentage gives you an idea of how much body fat you are carrying to determine if you are within a healthy weight range. Everyone needs a certain amount of body fat (essential fat) to stay alive and ensure that the body's immune system and metabolism are running at peak efficiency. This type of fat is also considered storage fat and is used up in times of emergency. Excess body fat can be stored on the body as a result of poor diet, lack of exercise or hormonal problems. Calculating your body fat percentage can help you determine whether you have enough essential fat or too much fat that puts you at an unhealthy weight.

Tools for Calculating Body Fat Percentage

Online body fat calculators can give you a general idea of your body fat percentage by taking your gender, weight and waist size into account. However, these numbers are not always accurate. The best way to calculate body fat percentage is to use body fat calipers or a body fat scale.

Body fat calipers measure the skinfolds to determine how much fat is sitting right under the skin's top layer. Using calipers is one of the most accurate ways to calculate body fat percentage, and it's best to take at least four measurements to obtain an average. You will need the help of a personal trainer or friend to measure the skinfolds around your abdomen.

A body fat scale is a convenient and reliable way to determine your body composition, and work by sending a harmless electrical current through the body to find out how much fatty tissue you have. It's important to remember that body fat scales calculate the density of fat and only predict your actual body fat percentage.

Making Sense of Your Body Fat Percentage Readings

For women, the minimum amount of body fat needed to stay alive is within 10 to 12 percent. The lean range of body fat typically found in athletes is 14 to 20 percent, and the ideal range is 21 to 24 percent. The average female has an average of 25 to 31 percent body fat, but anything at or above 32 percent is considered overweight or obese.

For men, the minimum amount of body fat to stay alive is 2 to 4 percent. The lean range of body fat typically found in athletes is 6 to 13 percent, while the ideal body fat range is 14 17 percent. The average male has 18 to 25 percent body fat, and anything at or above 25 percent is considered to be overweight or obese.

Sealice Home Remedy

Sea lice are the tiny larvae of jellyfish. They have the same make-up as an adult jellyfish and the same stinging ability. They are tiny and easily get trapped between your swimsuit and your skin or in crevices of your body, causing the fish to sting. Sea lice are visible with the naked eye but become virtually invisible in the water. Often the only way you will know you have encountered them is by the rash on your body after they have stung you. Once stung, you will develop extreme itching and small blisters.

Immediately Following the Sting

If you find out after you have been stung that sea lice are around, leave the water and remove your bathing suit. The suit could trap the sea lice against your skin and allow them to fire off more venom. You will also want to avoid rinsing off while still wearing the suit since the freshwater could cause more stings. Before you consider wearing the suit again, you will want to thoroughly wash and dry it to remove any remaining sea lice.

Removing the Sea Lice

Now it is time to remove any visible sea lice and their stingers. Anything is fine to do this as long as you do not grab them with your hands or use anything that will press them into the skin and cause more stings. If you have a razor and shaving cream available, shave them off. If not, you can use sand and a sea shell or the edge of a credit card to get the same effect.

Treating the Site

Taking a freshwater shower immediately after being stung is probably the first thing you will think of, but this is a bad idea. Fresh water can cause the stingers to fire more venom into your skin. Also, taking a bath will cause any remaining sea lice to float about and sting you on other parts of your body.

Instead, treat the affected site with white vinegar. Soak a towel and place it over the site for 30 minutes. This will provide relief from the pain and keep the stingers from firing. A lot of beaches, especially in Australia, have vinegar stations set up specifically for these stings. If you don't have vinegar available you can use rubbing alcohol, baking soda or lemon juice.

Further Treatment

The effects of a sting generally last one to two days, but that can vary based on the person. There are several methods to relieve the pain and discomfort; you may have to try various ones until you find the one that is right for you. Hydrocortisone cream can be applied to the site as needed. Some find relief by rubbing castor oil or aloe vera on the site daily.

Cautions

Everyone will react differently to sea lice. If you are experiencing symptoms similar to a bee sting, see a doctor immediately. Likewise, if a child is stung on a large percentage of his body, take him to the doctor. Sometimes the site will not heal quickly or will become infected, at which time it is also necessary to see your health-care professional.

Sleep Better With Natural Remedies

Can’t sleep? You’re not alone. Millions of Americans have difficulty falling (and staying) asleep. Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders affecting Americans today. The good news is that there are easy, natural ways to tackle insomnia. Here are some tips to help you get a good night's sleep

Instructions

Sleep Better With Natural Remedies

1. Drink a cup of chamomile tea before bedtime. It’s a mild, safe sedative that will help to give you a restful sleep. Chamomile has been used for a number of years as a remedy for stress, anxiety, and insomnia. Another great option: Silent Night tea from Nature’s Way can be very helpful.

2. Try other herbs. California poppy, passionflower, and valerian will calm you before bedtime. Research shows that kava kava is also a good relaxant. If stress or anxiety is one of the reasons for your insomnia, this herb will help you develop better sleep patterns.

3. Take a hot bath—not a shower—an hour before bedtime. Another good idea: Put several drops of a soothing essential oil such as chamomile in the bath water. Or try applying a lavender lotion to your body just before bedtime. Aromatherapy is growing in popularity as an effective treatment for insomnia. Also, English lavender has the ability to calm the mind and induce deeper, higher-quality sleep.

4. Taking five milligrams of melatonin one hour before bedtime will help with occasional sleeplessness. It's one of the best remedies for insomnia, experts say. Melatonin is a natural hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain and known to regulate the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. As we age, our bodies produce far less melatonin than when we were younger.

5. Spoon up some yogurt at night, eat a banana, a date or a fig. All contain trypotophan, one of the best-known sources for promoting sleep. Also a good idea: Spend at least an hour to relax and unwind. Learn to put worries out of your mind. Recreate a pleasurable time in your life and live it in your mind. For example, visualize yourself at the beach. Hear the waves crashing against the shore. The use of imagery is really helpful.

Learn Proper Breathing

Learn proper breathing by doing routine cardiovascular exercise such as swimming.

Proper breathing is important for everyone to feel and be completely healthy. It is important in all aspects of life, from relaxing before bed to being involved in the most strenuous exercise. Learning how takes practice and there are many activities that can help you learn proper breathing techniques.

Yoga

Yoga is a practice that is designed around the art of breathing. Taking classes with a trained yoga teacher teaches you to breathe properly throughout your entire workout or stretch routine. During yoga, move with your breath and only go as deep into a stretch as you can while still breathing deeply.

Meditation

Meditation is a practice you can do any time of the day. Sit up straight, close your eyes, and focus on clearing your mind of conscious thought. Every time your mind wanders, bring your thoughts back only to your breath. The longer you meditate, the deeper and calmer your breathing becomes, which relaxes you.

Cardiovascular Exercise

The more you participate in cardiovascular exercise, the better at proper breathing you will get. When starting out with a new exercise such as running, bike riding, or swimming, it is easy to let your breath get out of control. This causes you to tire out quickly. Continue to exercise three to five days per week, and your breathing will eventually fall into a pattern. Try breathing with each step or each stroke in a rhythm.

Resident assessment protocols (RAPs) are a component of a Minimum Data Set (MDS), the clinical assessment tool that nursing facilities certified by Medicare and Medicaid use.

MDS

An RN coordinator prepares a MDS for each resident of a certified nursing home with input from a care plan team which may consist of additional nursing staff, a social worker, medical director, dietitian and family members. Once completed, it goes to the MDS database maintained by each state. The MDS is also the tool by which nursing homes receive payment for their Medicaid and Medicare patients.

RAPs

RAPs are a record of 18 medical concerns which, when triggered on an MDS, indicate that a nursing home patient requires additional medical attention. Triggers may include issues with cognitive function, behavior management, nutrition, wound care or fall prevention.

Regulation

All components of the MDS must be completed and updated in accordance with nursing home regulations. Failure to complete the required documentation, providing inaccurate documentation, or failing to provide the services indicated on the MDS may result in significant fines or denial of payment.

Hypnotize People

Ancient civilizations believed that hypnosis was a way to alter the human state of mind, in order to promote subconscious healing of the body. Unfortunately, much of today's society views hypnosis as no more than a parlor trick. But what many do not realize is that they are in a hypnotic state several times a day! Any time you find yourself staring, or driving and not remembering how you got there because your mind was wandering, you were actually in a hypnotic state! Best described as an altered state, in which the mind is relaxed and focused, hypnosis can be one of the most useful tools our brains have to offer us. Breaking habits, pain management, anesthesia and healing progression, can all be enhanced by the use of hypnosis. By using the power of suggestion, hypnosis can create a relaxed state that can help the receiver overcome a multitude of obstacles. The following article will help teach you hypnotize people, in order to encourage the benefits of subconscious healing.

Instructions

1. Create a relaxed setting for your hypnosis to take place. Soft lighting and a quiet area with no distractions will work best

2. Speak gently and ask the person that you wish to hypnotize to relax. You want your hypnotized subject to feel completely comfortable, relaxing all muscles and their mind.

3. Ask the person to close their eyes and breath deeply in and out, again promoting further relaxation.

4. Take notice as to whether the person seems to be completely relaxed of entranced. If so, you are ready to begin the more vocal part of hypnosis. The question and answer, or power of suggestion. Using your words to "suggest" relief of pain or stress from the subjects mind.

5. Close the session by suggesting a word that will break the trance like state. Such as, "When I say the words 'open your eyes,' you will leave this level of consciousness and regain a full state of mind."

6. Encourage the person at sessions end, to believe in the power of hypnosis. To understand that by allowing their mind to relax and accept the power of suggestion, that they may be able to reap the benefits of hypnosis.

Intense Lower Back Pain

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), approximately 80 percent of Americans will experience intense lower back pain at some point. Intense lower back pain can be acute or chronic. Acute intense lower back pain can last for a few days or weeks. Chronic intense lower back pain can last anywhere from a few months to several years. Patients should consult their doctors to identify sources and potential courses of treatment.

Effects

Intense lower back pain often interferes with a patient's job. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) states that it is among the main reasons that Americans miss work.

Cause

There are many possible causes of intense lower back pain. It can result from trauma, strain, inactivity, skeletal problems, poor posture, soft tissue disorders, nerve irritation or arthritis.

Treatment

Treatment for intense lower back pain depends upon the cause of the pain. Treatments may include medication, ice packs or heating pads, physical therapy to strengthen the back and surgery.

Prevention/Solution

Patients can prevent the development of intense lower back pain by exercising, lifting heavy items properly, using back supports, practicing good posture and getting enough calcium in their diets.

Warning

It is possible for intense lower back pain to signal another serious underlying problem. Patients who also experience symptoms such as fever or leg weakness should see their doctors immediately.

Naturopathic Cancer Treatments

Naturopathic medicine is an alternative medicine involving treatments that concentrate on using natural remedies that allow the body to heal itself. Naturopathic cancer treatments favor using a minimal amount of surgery or drugs. Naturopathy is practiced by licensed physicians and consists of diagnosing, treating and preventing human diseases and disorders by using natural therapeutic materials and methods.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been used as a naturopathic cancer treatment. With acupuncture, tiny needles are strategically placed on various pressure points on the patient's body. The acupuncturist can adjust the pressure of the needle stimulation and the technique for the type of cancer he is treating. For a cancerous tumor, the acupuncturist treats the patient for a congealed blood pattern and will use blood stimulating techniques. Success for treating cancer with acupuncture has been limited because many cancer patients do not seek alternative treatments for their cancer until the later stages of the disease, after other traditional methods have failed.

Herbal Medicine

Chinese herbal medicine is a naturopathic cancer treatment that treats the symptoms of a disease rather than the disease itself. Practitioners attempt to treat and prevent the imbalances that are caused by cancer by combining various plant extracts, herbs and minerals, such as ginseng, green tea and ginkgo. The herbal combinations are supposed to treat and prevent infections, hormone disturbances and various forms of cancer. Herbal medicine is not intended to cure cancer. It is meant to be used alongside other treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Herbalists believe their herbal remedies will help control pain, will help with the side effects of the traditional cancer therapies and will help to stop the tumor from spreading and growing. Herbal medicine also aims to build immunity to cancer.

Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a naturopathic cancer treatment that treats the person's body and mind simultaneously. Those who practice homeopathy believe that the body and mind are so connected to each other that diseases such as cancer will not be cured until the patient's character and emotional state is addressed. Homeopathy will not actually treat the cancer; it will treat the cancer patient. It attempts to stimulate the patient's own desire to be healed to start the healing process in motion. Traditional medicine wants to destroy the cancerous tumor, whereas homeopathy wants the patient to destroy the tumor through his will in a mind-over-matter type treatment.

Clinical Nutrition

Clinical nutrition is a naturopathic cancer treatment that is inexpensive and helps to delay or prevent the onset of cancer. Clinical nutritionists claim that sugar feeds cancer, and they offer diet and supplements to encourage the patient to eat healthier and ingest the proper nutrients to starve the cancerous cells. Nutrition therapy is intended to force the patient's body to become less able to support cancerous growths. Almost half of cancer patients die from malnutrition.

What Are The Black Tourmaline Benefits

Black tourmaline offers several benefits to those who choose to use it.

One school of alternative medicine believes that it is important to keep a positive and well-managed flow of energy in the human body. One way to focus this energy is by using naturally occurring crystals. These crystals can act as tools for channeling specific benefits and effects, and they're often used as aids in meditation and in ritual practice. Black tourmaline is one of these stones, and there are several benefits that those who use them claim the stone offers.

Healing

According to those who believe in crystal and energy healing, tourmaline is an extremely useful stone for healing. One theory put forth by kiflow.com is that tourmaline, especially black tourmaline, has been shown to contain a minor electric charge. The theory is that this electric charge creates a positive reaction in the human body, while at the same time keeping the wearer of the stone safe from other, harmful electromagnetic fields. Black tourmaline is supposed to help a person keep her mood stable and allow the body to heal itself more rapidly.

Increased Circulation

Black tourmaline has been touted as a crystal that helps create increased circulation and blood flow, which help people who wear the stone maintain better health. Supposedly the slight electric charge that occurs naturally in black tourmaline causes the stone to release both negative ions and far infrared rays. Negative ions supposedly clean the air that the wearer is breathing, and far infrared rays are used in saunas and in therapy to help treat muscle aches and skin problems. There is no definite proof that black tourmalines produce enough of an effect to help increase blood flow, but there is no harm in wearing them.

Mood and Protection

For those of a more mystical bent, black tourmaline supposedly protects someone who wears it from negative emotions and even from black magic. Black tourmaline supposedly neutralizes negative emotions such as envy, greed, anger and disfavor which can take a toll on a person's day-to-day life. While black tourmaline is supposed to protect you from these emotions being projected onto you, it is also supposed to help you maintain a good and positive outlook so that your own negativity doesn't trip you up. This is even harder to measure, but there are people who buy black tourmaline explicitly for these supposed benefits of wearing and using the stone.

Chinese Medicine Remedies For Dissolving Fibroids

Fibroids fall under the category of abdominal masses or "Zheng Jia" and are often accompanied by pain, distention, vaginal discharge or bleeding. Fibroids develop due to stagnation of qi (energy), blood and phlegm-dampness in the lower abdomen. This occurs over time due to a vacuity of qi, a disharmony of qi and blood or an invasion of wind-cold during menstruation or following childbirth. Repressing emotions such as anger and frustration, poor diet and lifestyle are also contributing factors. The treatment protocol would be to move qi, invigorate blood and transform phlegm-dampness.

Functions and Properties of Herbs

Herbs indicated to regulate (or move) qi are aromatic, acrid, bitter and sometimes warm in nature. They promote movement, disperse stagnation and stop pain.

In the case of stagnation of qi, the treatment would be to quicken the blood and move qi. Herbs such as mu xiang, zhi ke, qing pi and chuan lian zi from the regulate qi category would be utilized for their ability to break up stagnation and clumping, promote the flow of qi, and stop pain. Sang len and e zhu would be used to invigorate both qi and blood and break up accumulations.

Herbs that invigorate blood are acrid, bitter and warm and are particularly useful for pain, resolving masses and stasis of blood. Because of the interdependent relationship between qi and blood, when you invigorate blood it's useful to simultaneously promote the movement of qi for best results in resolving disease.

Tao ren is one of the primary herbs used to invigorate blood and dispel stasis and is often used in conjunction with yan hu suo, dang gui and chi shao for blood stasis induced menstrual disorders. Gui zhi more gently assists in removing stagnation by warming the blood vessels and regulating menses, especially in cases where there is cold in the lower jiao.

The last area to be addressed is phlegm-dampness. Herbs used here are acrid, warm, aromatic and dry. Cang zhu and ban xia are used to dry dampness and mobilize phlegm. Cang zhu and xiang fu used together alleviate pain due to qi stagnation. These herbs can be added to a common formula (er chen tang), which harmonizes the middle jiao and whose main function is to transform phlegm-dampness obstructing qi. The consideration here is when the spleen/stomach are functioning properly, phlegm-dampness will not have the opportunity to occur elsewhere in the body.

Herbs in raw form can be cooked with water over heat, saving the remaining liquid and taken twice a day; purchased as granules, dissolved in warm water and consumed as a tea, or taken in pill form. The pill form is considered less desirable as the effects are generally milder and slow acting.

Cautions and Recommendations

Caution should be exercised if pregnant, experiencing a dry cough, prolonged or excessive menstrual bleeding, qi or yin deficiency. Prolonged bleeding, pain and dark foul-smelling discharge are often signs of malignant growths.

Consulting a licensed practitioner of Chinese medicine is always recommended before using any medicinal herb.

Saliva'S Affect On Dental Instruments

In dental procedures, it's not shocking to anybody that saliva often gets onto dental instruments. After all, dental instruments are inserted directly into peoples' mouths. It's also not surprising that saliva can often have a pretty negative effect on dental instruments. This is why it's so important for dental tools to be thoroughly cleansed and sterilized after every use. That way, the dental instruments will be fresh and sanitary and ready for the next patient's mouth.

Significance

In saliva, there are microscopic blood pathogens that are capable of destroying and causing dental instruments to deteriorate gradually. This erosion of dental instruments can lead to the tools becoming rusty if they are not properly sterilized, disinfected and stored. This is precisely why dental instruments should be cleaned after exposure to every single patient.

Identification

Dental instruments are generally made out of stainless steel, which is a material that is capable of rusting easily. It's not the actual saliva from the mouth that causes the tools to become damaged, but the blood of the blood pathogens contained inside of the saliva.

Prevention/Solution

Right after a dental procedure, dental instruments should be cleaned, because if the saliva remains on the instruments for too long, the erosion process can start. So after a patient is through with a dental tool, it's important to scrub the instrument using a brush and some dental disinfectant. Then, the instrument should be packed up into a sterilization pack and put through a sterilization machine for further cleaning.

Theories/Speculation

Another big problem that saliva can have on dental instruments is that it can eat away at mirrors. Mirrors are a common tool in dental processes (used to be able to view hard-to-see parts of the mouth, as well as other functions) and saliva is capable of eating away at a mirror, render it unusable afterward. Mirrors must be put through the same extensive cleaning process as all of the other dental instruments for that purpose.

Warning

Even though it's shocking to think that blood pathogens are contained inside of saliva, it's 100% true. Over half of people have blood in their saliva all of the time. Blood can show up after extensive tooth brushing, after kissing and sometimes even after eating!

Safety Rules To Prevent Accidents

Every day we are faced with many different situations in which there is a potential for an accident to happen, whether at home, at work or while traveling. Most accidents are easily preventable with the use of some common sense coupled with an active sense of awareness of your surroundings.

Safety Rules for Driving

Many accidents that occur while driving are caused by a driver's inattention to driving as a result of a distraction such as the stereo, eating or a cellular phone. You can avoid an accident while driving by simply obeying common safety rules. The first rule is to not talk on the phone or text message while driving. Rather than holding the phone and looking at the screen, use a hands-free device such as a headset or speakerphone. Many newer model cars come with an integrated Bluetooth speakerphone built into the dashboard, making it easy to transition from a hand-held call while walking to a hands-free call once you get in your car. The built-in systems automatically pick up the call from your cell phone within 20 feet of the car.

The second safety rule for driving is to avoid eating or drinking while driving. Though this is sometimes unavoidable, if you must eat or drink while driving, make sure that your food is easily accessible with one hand so that your attention is not taken away from the road.

A third safety rule is to avoid driving while intoxicated. Even if you don't think you're drunk or that your driving would be impaired by the amount of alcohol you've had, you very easily could be over the legal limit. After having one beer or glass of wine, it is a good idea to wait at least 2 hours before driving. If you are planning to drink alcohol while out at dinner ,select a designated driver in advance who will not be partaking of alcoholic beverages in order to make sure that everyone gets home safely.

The fourth rule of safe driving is to wear a seat belt. Many states require that you wear a safety belt while in a vehicle because they help to protect you in case of an accident by restraining your body in such a way as to cause a minimal amount of injury.

Preventing Accidents at Home

The vast majority of accidents happen in the home. Using common sense while cleaning and organizing your home can help to prevent many of these accidents. Keep cleaning products in a secure area away from heat and flame, and out of reach of children. Remove common obstacles such as loose wires and cables from walkways. Put away children's toys that are not in use to prevent tripping and falling. Monitor any burning candles or incense. Also, turn off and unplug any appliances not in use to avoid fire hazards.

Safety While Working

Like other accidents, workplace accidents can often be easily avoided by using common sense and keeping in mind some simple safety rules. For instance, wear any protective gear necessary for your job, including safety glasses, gloves and steel-toed boots. Be aware of your co-workers and their actions, especially with regard to any equipment being used. Ask for help when necessary, including when lifting objects. Lift with your legs and keep your back straight. If an object is too large or heavy to easily lift on your own, do not be afraid to ask for help when moving it. If an accident does happen, report it to your supervisor and seek immediate medical attention.

Clean Ear Wax With Ear Drops

Improve your hearing by using ear drops specifically formulated to clean ear wax buildup.

Significant ear wax buildup can cause minor hearing problems over time. While the lack of hearing can be very frustrating, doctors advise strongly against the use of small cotton swabs to clean your ears. This is because of the danger of a punctured ear drum and the consequential hearing damage, which can be permanent. Several varieties of ear drops exist on the market, however, to maintain healthy, clean ears and keep your hearing at its best.

Instructions

1. Wash and dry your hands.

2. Shake the bottle to correct any settling of its contents. Read the instructions, particularly regarding how many drops you will need and how often you should use the drops.

3. Remove the dropper from the bottle if needed. Turn your head sideways over a sink with your left ear upward.

4. Squeeze the dropper very gently to release the appropriate number of drops into your ear. Wipe any residual drops or moisture from your earlobe with a tissue.

5. Remain with your head sideways for the amount of time the bottle suggests. In general, two to five minutes is an appropriate waiting period.

6. Press a clean tissue gently against your ear and turn your head to the other side. Wait for any excess moisture to run out of your ear. Dispose of the tissue and repeat steps 3 through 5 for your right ear.

Make Scented Oil

Make Scented Oil

Making scented oil requires nothing more than a carrier oil of your choice, and essential oils to create the scent. Carrier oil is used to deliver the scent to the body, or the air. Scented oils can be used for massage, as air fresheners, or in homemade bath and body products. This recipe yields approximately 2 oz., or 4 tbsp., of scented oil.

Instructions

1. Pour 4 tbsp.of carrier oil of your choice into a small, dark-colored glass bottle. Extra virgin olive oil, sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil or sesame oil can be used. Do not use low-quality cooking oils to make scented oil, as they do not mix well with scents.

2. Add approximately 50 to 60 drops of essential oil of your choice to the bottle. Lavender, vanilla and rose work well for massage oils, while lemon, lime and orange work well for air fresheners. Use one or a combination of essential oils, but do not exceed 60 drops.

3. Place the lid on the bottle and shake well to mix. Label the bottle with the contents, and store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight until ready for use. Scented oil will keep indefinitely with proper storage.

4. To use scented oil for massage, rub into the skin, usually the upper chest, neck and back, until the oil is fully absorbed. To use as an air freshener, place a few drops in a light bulb ring, or a diffuser. Add several drops to bathwater for an aromatic bath or apply the oil directly to the skin as a mild perfume, but don't use too much.

Effects Of Ethanol On Ice

Dry ice is used to clean ethanol plants.

Ice contains low friction, which makes ice useful to ice skaters and dangerous to motorists. Scientists have observed significant activities with ice at lower temperatures, including the phenomenon of pre-melting, and have also noticed various chemical reactions that occur when ethanol and ice are combined. Ethanol has already been used as an antifreeze and as a source of amusement with two different ice tricks: the flaming ice cube and the sinking ice cube. Dry ice has been used as a cleaning tool in ethanol plants.

Pre-Melting

Ice sometimes forms a pre-melting layer in below freezing temperatures. The liquid layer results from the free energy of surface temperatures and is dependent on the direction of the crystal surface. There are cases in which ice surfaces do not have pre-melting. Ethanol is a chemical that has an impact on the pre-melting of ice. The ethanol mostly interacts with the hydrogen found in the hydrogen and oxygen compounds that make up water, causing pre-melting to occur at lower temperatures. This lower-temperature pre-melting can have implications regarding the destruction of the ozone layer and increasing the slickness of ice rinks. The maintenance of the ozone is dependent on the existence of ice in the air, which is reduced by pre-melting. Premelting on ice at ice rinks creates the friction needed to make ice skating possible.

Computational Model

Harvard University has created a computational model that was created to study how ethanol affects pre-melting. These computer models will be used to explore water and ethanol interactions, examine the concentration of ethanol and pre-melt water and compare the thickness of the pre-melt layer of ice with the ethanol to the layer that lacks ethanol.

Freezing Point

Ethanol has a lower freezing point than water. When the ethanol is mixed with the water, the freezing point is not reached. As a result, the water mixed with ethanol has to become much colder in order to form ice. The ethanol is usually mixed with sugar and forms a liquid solution.

Tricks

Ethanol can mix with the water that is released from the ice cube when the ice cube melts. Since ethanol is very flammable, the ice cube will appear to be on fire when the ethanol around the ice cube burns. Ethanol can also be used to make ice sink. Since ethanol looks like water, but is less dense than water, the ice cube will sink through the ethanol.

Dry Ice

Dry ice is used to clean ethanol plants when the ethanol plants are shut down. A technique known as dry ice blasting cleans the ethanol plant equipment without leaving the equipment wet, according to Midwest Dry Ice Blasting. When the equipment is wet, the ethanol plant has to remain shut down until the equipment has dried. The ethanol plants produce carbon as a byproduct, which can be turned into dry ice, according to Soil and Material Engineers.

Qi Gong & Dao Yin Exercises For A Hernia

Sources are in agreement that qi gong and dao yin are useful in the treatment of hernias. There are over 40 movements for healing and over 20 more for prevention. The entire practice of qigong is beneficial to the healing of hernias, and not just an exercise or two. Described below is just one exercise, "Heaven and Earth." It promotes energy flow between the upper (heaven) and lower (earth) parts of the body.

Tiptoe movements

Stand erect with feet shoulder width apart. Arms hang down at the sides. Pretend your head is being held up by an invisible cord at the top of your head. Half close your eyes, and press your tongue to the roof of your mouth.

Point your fingers of both hands straight out in front of you, keeping your arms down at your side. Stand up on tiptoe while twisting your wrists and fingers outward, away from your body. Lower your heels while returning your fingers to a forward position. Repeat this exercise nine times.

Raise Arms, Then Squat

Raise your arms over head, as if you were holding a ball. Then squat down, bringing your arms down to the insteps of your feet. Pause for a little while, then rise back up to a standing position. As you rise, slide your hands up the back of your legs from your heels, up your buttocks, resting your palms on your waist. Then return your arms to resting position by your sides.

Slide Hands Down

Repeat. This time, when you return your palms to your waist, raise your arms like you were holding a ball above your head again, and then lower your hands down the back of your head, to the nape of your neck, down your shoulders, sliding down your chest, around to your lower back, and slide down the back of your legs while squatting down again. End with your hands on your feet.

Slide Hands Up

Repeat again. This time when you go down, slide your hands down the outside of your legs, slide across the insteps of your feet, and slide back up the inside of your legs. Rest your hands on your belly, and then move your arms back to rest position.

Hug a Tree

With palms facing inward toward you, bring your arms toward your torso, as if you were giving an imaginary tree a hug. Press your middle fingers together in this position for a few seconds. Return arms to rest position.

Place both hands on your lower belly without pressing. Return your arms to rest position.

Barstool and Ball

Next, squat slightly as if you were sitting on an imaginary bar stool. Put your arms in front of you as if you were holding a ball. Hold this position as long as possible.

Dragon and Tiger

Finally, stand upright, placing your palms on your belly. Massage your belly in a clockwise spiral that gets wider with every circle. Make nine circles. Then massage your belly in a counterclockwise motion nine times, with every circle decreasing in size. For each ring, silently chant "the green dragon is hidden in the east and the white tiger in the west."

What Are The Stages Of Addiction Recovery

There are only two essential ways to overcome addiction and five stages to recovery. This article will delve into the details of recovery and more.

Recovery

One of the ways to overcome addiction completely is through abstinence, or the complete stopping of the addictive behavior. Many addicts, however, are unwilling to stop their addiction altogether. The alternate path is to continue their addiction moderately. Their habit is monitored and they are in control rather than their addiction controling them.

Stage 1-Awareness and Early Acknowledgement

This stage is marked by an awareness of the addiction and that action is needed to address the issues. This process involves a shifting of perspective from outright denial to a willingness to address the issue.

Stage 2--Research and Consideration

Characterized by a willingness to discover more about the addiction and recovery, this step involves the increasing of the addict's knowledge about the realities of the addiction and how it's affecting the addict's life and those around him.

Stage 3--Exploring Recovery

This is the first clear stage of recovery. Beyond the denial stage now, the addict is willing to step toward a clear resolution to quit the addiction.

Stage 4--Early Recovery

Stage 4 marks the first sign of early recovery. Although still fragile, this is the stage that is based upon full recovery and during which a new life can be built.

Stage 5--Active Recovery and Maintenance

For many, this stage has no end. Recovery can be a life-long effort for some. It can end up being a lifestyle. By the time people enter Stage 5, they are monitoring themselves, their feelings, thoughts and relationships. Here, people are learning life without addiction.

The Journey to Recovery

It takes time to build yourself for recovery. How long it takes before recovery would depend on the commitment to recovery, the personality, the approach, and the resilience of the addict. This road to recovery wouldn't be possible without the help of family and friends. Surrounding yourself with people who will only help you in the end can only be a big plus.

Improve Blood Pressure With Acupuncture

Improve Blood Pressure with Acupuncture

Acupuncture stimulates the energy within the body and it can have a positive effect on blood pressure. Blood pressure is the measurement of how forceful the blood is pushing against the arteries. It is common for people to have high blood pressure (hypertension). 140/90 or more is considered high blood pressure. Low blood pressure (hypotension) is more often diagnosed by the patient's symptoms. People with low blood pressure do not function properly since the blood is not powerful enough to reach vital organs.

Instructions

1. Have your blood pressure taken either at a hospital or on the machines in some drug stores. Determine if you have high or low blood pressure. People with low blood pressure should seek medical attention immediately, because their body could shut down.

2. Find a licensed acupuncturist who has had many years of experience. When using acupuncture to improve blood pressure, it is important that the needles be placed in the correct areas.

3. Discuss using electroacupuncture with your acupuncturist. A 30-minute treatment has been shown to reduce high blood pressure significantly. This technique involves applying electric stimulation to the needles.

4. Discuss taking Chines herbs like Tian Ma, Xia Ku Cao, Dan Shan or Shan Zha to supplement your acupuncture treatment. These herbs can help with high blood pressure.

5. If stress is causing your high blood pressure, acupuncture can help you relax. While the needles are in your skin, take deep breaths. Imagine all of your stress being released from your body. Acupuncture can stimulate the serotonin, which is usually suppressed when there is an excess of cortisol.

Overcome Heatinduced Fatigue

If you experience heat-related fatigue, get out of the sun, cool your body down and elevate legs.

Heat-induced fatigue is a real risk in the hot sun and high humidity. It is often the result of long-term exposure to intense heat, extreme physical exertion or inadequate replacement of fluids. Symptoms include an almost complete loss of energy, hot skin, dizziness, nausea and an inability to eat. You also may experience paleness, weakness and muscle cramps. These symptoms often come on suddenly, perhaps during or after exercise. This type of fatigue can become a life-threatening situation and should be treated immediately.

Instructions

1. Cool your body. Get into a shady area or air conditioning and cool off with wet towels. It may help to place ice packs, or cold water bottles, in your armpits, behind your knees, groin and on your neck to help cool your body quickly. Get in front of a fan if possible. Loosen your clothing. Clothes that don't allow you to sweat increases your risk of heat-related fatigue.

2. Drink fluids. Slowly drink cold water or other nonalcoholic beverage. Sports drinks will also help replenish lost electrolytes. Avoid tea, coffee and soda. Drinking alcohol can increase your chances of suffering from heat-related fatigue.

3. Condition yourself. Slowly increase your exposure to heat so your body has a chance to adjust. Take frequent breaks and drink plenty of fluids, whether you are exercising or working outdoors.

Remove A Bedpan

Disposable gloves

For a patient, using a bedpan and asking for assistance with it can be an embarrassing situation. As caretaker or assistant, you need to treat the patient with compassion and courtesy, while efficiently taking care of their needs. Keep in mind that even when dealing with patients who may not be able to communicate well, it is important to speak to the patient and let them know exactly what you are doing before you do it.

Instructions

1. Explain to the patient that you will be assisting him by removing his bedpan. Speak in a calm, confident voice to put the patient at ease.

2. Lower the bed so that it is flat.

Elements Of A Good Crisis Management Plan

Don't fall victim to an ineffective crisis management plan.

A good crisis management plan can mean the difference between keeping people safe in an emergency and jeopardizing their health and wellness. From a business perspective, it can be a determining factor in preserving your company or being forced to close it down. Consequently, there are many reasons why schools, businesses and government agencies rely on crisis management plans, and understand the necessity in creating ones that have all the effective elements.

Organizational and Communication Tree

When a crisis presents itself, you will not have time to figure out who needs to do what and who needs to contact who. This information must be thought about and decided on in advance, and the information must be located in the crisis management plan. An organizational and communication tree illustrates the main responders to a crisis within an organization. For instance, the company's human resource director may be responsible for letting the company managers know of a crisis, and each manager may be responsible for letting his direct reports know of the crisis. It is important for the organizational and communication tree to be a part of the crisis management plan so that everyone knows who they are supposed to contact in an emergency.

Identified Crises

The crisis management plan must identify a variety of potential crises that can occur, such as environmental crises, technological crises, product or service crises, or financial crises. Within each identified crisis, the management plan should have a scoring system in place to rate the different levels of a crisis. A plan of action must be affiliated with each level, since a low-scale crisis will not warrant the same response plan that a severe crisis requires. Crises should be grouped together by relevancy so that they can be easily located in the crisis management plan.

Prevention Steps

A well-crafted crisis management plan will detail steps that can be taken in order to avoid crises. The prevention section of the plan can be developed once the various crises are identified. Prevention activities may include routine audits and monitoring efforts, risk assessments, hazard interventions and staff crisis response training.

Checks and Balances

In case a crisis cannot be prevented, a checks and balances section of your crisis management plan will allow you to determine whether you have followed all of the identified protocols for responding to a crisis. Some items on the checks and balances list may include if all employees have been notified, if buildings have been evacuated or if emergency responders have been contacted. In the time of a crisis, you do not want to forget something of importance.

Resource List

Your crisis management plan should have a resource list with the names and contact information for people you might need to access in an emergency. This can range from the phone number of the city water company to the contact information of a cab service that may be needed for transportation.

Evaluation

A good crisis management plan will document the incidents that occur and provide an evaluation of the events from a strategic angle. The evaluation section will discuss how things went wrong, and what improvement efforts can be instituted to ensure the crisis does not repeat itself in the future.
