Treat a Black Widow Spider Bite


Initially, you might not even feel a black widow spider's venomous bite. The pain usually progresses up or down the bitten arm or leg, then gathers in your back, abdomen and sometimes the soles of your feet. You may also have chest tightness, swollen eyelids, sweating, shaking, vomiting or difficulty breathing. The good news is, the bite of a black widow spider is rarely deadly. Instructions


1. Remain calm. The bigger your reaction to the bite, the more quickly the spider's venom will get into your bloodstream and begin to circulate.


2. Clean the area around the bite thoroughly with soap and water.


3. Apply a cool compress to the area of the bite to reduce swelling.


4. If the bite is on a hand, foot, arm or leg, elevate the area of the bite above the level of your heart to reduce swelling and slow the spread of the venom.


5. Apply an antiseptic such as iodine or hydrogen peroxide to the area to help prevent infection.


6. Seek medical attention as soon as possible. Calcium gluconate or an antiserum can be administered to counteract the venom.

Though they are tiny little organisms, lice can cause incredible frustration and misery. Worst case scenario you can catch diseases like typhus, trench fever and relapsing fever. It is more common, however, that a person who has lice suffers from the itching than actually catching a serious disease.


Lice doesn't discriminate by age or hygenically--and even a proper treatment of lice shampoo sometimes doesn't do the trick.


There are three different types of lice a person can get; head lice, body lice and pubic lice. Here is how you get rid of them.


Instructions








1. Determine if you have lice. An itchy head, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck, combined with redness is the first sign of lice infestation. You also can see small, white to silver-colored eggs, called nits, stuck near the roots of a hair shaft.








2. Shampoo hair with a lice removal cream rinse or shampoo. Follow the directions on the container. Usually you leave the treatment on your head for a certain length of time to kill all the live creepy crawlies.


3. Find a friend or relative to assist in the lice removal if you are the infested victim. Promising a few drinks afterwards can be a motivator for their assistance, but don't let them imbibe before they remove all the nits, or they will have more difficulty seeing the little, tiny eggs.


4. Move to a well-lit location and wrap a towel around your shoulders. Have a trash basket nearby to dispose of the little buggers as they are removed from your head.


5. Take a comb and divide hair into sections. Then, move most sections off the side using a clip, leaving only one section to work with.


6. Slide the nit removal comb slowly through a small section of hair. Start from the hair shaft and move down to the end. Remove any nits or lice that are stuck to the comb and dispose of them. Combing out nits can take several hours, so be patient and don't try to get it done in a hurry which can lead to missing one nit--a nit that can spawn future lice very quickly.


7. Repeat combing procedure for your entire head. Be careful not to drop any nits on the carpet where they might hatch and later find their way back to your delicious scalp to have their honeymoon and make more babies.


8. Wash all bedding and clothing in hot water. Then, dry them on the hot setting. Anything, like pillows, that can not be washed can be put in the dryer for a half to one hour on high heat.


9. Vacuum the carpet, furniture and the infected person's mattress to lift any lingering lice.


10. Re-check for nits every day for a week. If new nits appear, another shampooing will be necessary.

The Physiological Process Of Aging

Every living organism goes through the physiological process of aging. Fruit flies have a brief life span of a few hours, while olive trees can live for more than 2,000 years. Human beings in the United States live, on average,well into their seventies and the first signs of aging begin in the mid twenties. However, genetics, environmental influences and lifestyle choices greatly affect the aging process.


Time Frame


You may notice the first signs of aging in your twenties, with fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, the occasional gray hair and perhaps a receding hairline. Wrinkles become increasingly visible as the layer of fat beneath the skin is slowly lost.


By middle age, many people tend to retain weight around the abdomen and waist as fat redistributes in the body.


Muscle fibers shrink, and even athletes lose some strength and endurance. Age-related short-sightedness is a natural part of the aging process and people with normal eyesight are typically wearing glasses for reading by their forties.


All the senses gradually decline. Women start perimenopause as the body shuts down reproductive function, male sperm counts decreases, and both sexes may experience a reduction in sex drive.


From the fifth decade onward, heart and lung function decrease, lowering physical endurance and increasing intolerance to temperature extremes. Reduced blood flow means connective tissues, such as toenails and ligaments, start to atrophy and thicken.


A person may start getting arthritis in the joints, and be more susceptible to broken bones and fractures as bone density decreases. The metabolic system decreases at the rate of about 1 percent every year after age 25, leading to reduced stamina and the need for better nutrition to avoid becoming overweight.


Effects


Poor nutrition and lack of basic medical care will prematurely age people, and in parts of the world where nutrition and medical care are lacking, people will show physiological signs of aging at an accelerated rate and have a shorter life span. In some Third World countries, someone in their forties could be considered old. Habitual sun exposure can prematurely age skin and naturally occurring or industrial toxins can affect neurological and organ health. Exposure to pollution and carcinogens may cause age-related conditions like cataracts, cancers and heart disease in relatively young people.


Prevention/Solution








Little can be done about individual genetics, which program the body to age at a predetermined rate. However, individuals can do a lot to slow the physiological process of aging through lifestyle choices. Remaining physically active slows the loss of muscle and keeps heart and lungs healthy. Proper nutrition and maintaining an appropriate weight can slow the effects of the aging process, as can avoiding tobacco, and using alcohol moderately or not at all. Since the mind and the body are symbiotic systems and affect each other, a positive attitude, a good social support system and keeping the mind healthy by life-long learning are also important. Get all routine medical screening as recommended by a doctor.


Considerations


While the aging process is inevitable, there are benefits to attempting to minimise the effects of aging. Leading a healthier lifestyle beginning at a relatively young age allows an individual to live a longer, more active and fulfilling life with less chance of chronic health complications. Physically active people can reduce the course of the physiological process of aging. Humans exhibit varied physiological responses to their environment and upbringing, with the degree in which they are affected generally attributed to genetics. The biology and science of aging in humans is extensively studied, and genetic biomarkers are being identified, allowing scientists to determine true physiological age and potentially formulate anti-aging drugs.


Potential


In the past, people had little choice but to accept the aging process, with diminishing sensory function and age related physical impairment. Today there are glasses, hearing aids, high-tech surgeries and medications to manage everything from arthritis to heart attacks. Plastic surgery, implants, liposuction and laser treatments allow us to turn back the clock visually, at least temporarily. Increasing knowledge about nutrition, supplements and protection from environmental hazards is giving us further potential to slow aging and live even longer than ever before in history.

Alcoholic Depression Treatment

Alcohol is a depressant. It temporarily impedes communication to brain, reducing feelings of stress and anxiety. However, in the process, it also reduces the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. Reduced levels of these chemicals have been linked to a variety of psychiatric disorders, including depression. Your head will probably hurt for the first few days -- take the aspirin as directed and be sure to drink a full glass of water with it. Your stomach will be upset as the withdrawal symptoms kick in. The ginger ale will help soothe your digestive tract. The gum is simply to give you something to do as you're bound to be a bit edgy and gum chewing can help counteract nervousness. Grapes can help reduce the craving for alcohol while apples help to remove toxins from your system. Dates are a high-fiber snack that can help to ensure your system runs as smoothly as possible and celery juice contains chemicals that help to calm the nerves.


Depression








St. John's Wort has proven effective in treating depression in many cases. It is sold in the vitamin section of major department stores, pharmacies, and health food stores. Beginning at least two weeks before your quit date, take the recommended dosage of St. John's Wort. Follow the directions on the bottle, as dosage varies from brand to brand. If you are unhappy with the results or experience negative side effects from using the herb, SAM-e can also produce positive results. In addition to taking the medicinal herbs, begin an exercise program. Something as simple as walking for 30 minutes each day can help elevate the spirit and alleviate the effects of stress on the body. If you're really struggling through a bad day, try listening to cheerful music and singing along or watching a funny movie; the distraction can temporarily improve your mood. Limit your sugar intake as the inevitable crash that hits after a large "sugar rush" only aggravates the condition.

Pulled Calf Muscle Treatment

There are two muscles in the lower leg that make up the calf. The gastrocnemius is the larger upper calf muscle, and the soleus is the lower muscle. Either of these muscles is susceptible to being overly stretched. When this occurs, it is possible for the muscle fibers to tear, creating what is also known as a pulled muscle. Regardless of which muscle is torn or what caused the injury, the steps to take to treat it are similar.


First Action


When the muscle is first pulled, it is important to apply ice to the calf. This will reduce the amount of swelling. Elevating the leg can also help ward off excessive swelling. Moist heat can be applied after 48 hours, or alternated with ice to speed healing.


Rest


Try not to overuse your calf muscle while it is healing. Movements that use the calf involve pushing off with (as in walking) or raising up on the toes. It may not be necessary to completely rest it (this depends on the severity of the pull), and in fact if you can increase blood flow to your calf muscle by slowly walking or doing toe raises, you may speed healing. However, always stop your activity short of pain.








Compression


Wrapping the calf in an elastic bandage will decrease the pain and protect the pulled muscle from further injury while it heals. Do not wrap your calf muscle too tightly. Loosen it if your foot becomes cold or numb.


Stretching


Contrary to what you may think, gently stretching a pulled calf muscle can actually help the healing process. When some muscle fibers are torn, others have an increased burden. Muscle fibers in the calf that are not torn may become stiff and overworked and stretching them can keep them from becoming tight or injured. Stretch the calf by leaning on a wall with one leg in front of the other, leaning in toward the front leg until you feel the stretch on your back leg. Make sure the stretch is gentle and does not reach the point of being uncomfortable.


Heel Pads or Cups


Heel pads or cups worn in the shoes can prevent the calf from overstretching and can give torn muscles an opportunity to heal. These pads can be purchased at drug stores and placed into the heel of the shoe. You should also try to wear athletic shoes, as these provide a slight bit of elevation and cushioning on their own.


Medication


Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen can reduce swelling which will increase healing time. It will also dull the pain of pulled calf muscle. Make sure you can tolerate such medications before taking them.








Medical Attention


If your pulled calf muscle does not improve or is extremely painful, seek the attention of your physician who can determine whether your injury is serious and prescribe physical therapy if necessary.

Prevent Reflux & Heartburn With No Drugs

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), commonly called acid reflux disease, is a condition in which the contents of the stomach leak into the esophagus, causing irritation that can trigger heartburn, stomach pains, coughing, sore throat and vomiting. Dietary choices contribute greatly to heartburn and reflux, and many products are available from pharmacies and doctors to prevent reflux or reduce symptoms. There are also ways to stop or prevent reflux disease and heartburn without prescription or over-the-counter medications.


Instructions








1. Limit your food choices. Identify foods that cause reflux and heartburn and remove these items from your diet. Culprits may include chocolate, caffeine, citrus fruits, tomatoes and tomato products, spicy foods, fatty foods and peppermint. Keep a food journal to track what you eat and the symptoms it causes.


2. Wear loose clothing around your waist. Tight clothes and belts can push your stomach up and trigger a backflow of stomach acid into the throat.


3. Don't eat within two to three hours of bedtime. Stomach acid can travel to the throat when you are lying down if you haven't given your food time to digest.








4. Reduce portion size. Overeating is another common reflux and heartburn trigger. Eat smaller meals--and eat more frequently, if necessary--to control reflux without drugs.


5. Go on a diet. Lose excess pounds to reduce stomach pressure and decrease the risk of acid reflux. Exercise regularly (at least three times a week for 30 minutes), and eat a healthy diet that consists mainly of fruits, vegetables and lean meats.


6. Keep stomach acid in your stomach at night by elevating the head of your bed by 6 inches--gravity will make it unlikely that the acid will be able to travel up the esophagus. Preventing acid reflux at night is particularly important so you can sleep uninterrupted.

Broken Calcaneus Pain Relief

The calcaneus, or heel bone, consists of an extremely tough outer layer of bone material surrounding a spongy, softer interior. This combination creates a bone that is simultaneously quite difficult to break, and difficult to repair once broken. Relieving the pain from a broken calcaneus requires short-term care to reduce the swelling associated with injury, and damage repair to avoid permanent deformity and disability.


Recognizing Calcaneus Damage


According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, breaks of the calcaneus are commonly associated with falls from a significant height or motor vehicle accidents. For this reason, there is a good chance you will sustain additional injuries at the time of damage, and your doctors will need to distinguish your broken heel from other sources of pain. Typically, your pain symptoms will center on either the outside of your ankle or on the pad of your heel. You may also experience significant swelling and stiffness. In addition to these signs, a classic symptom of a calcaneus break is the inability to bear weight on the affected foot. If you suffer a hairline fracture rather than a traumatic break, these symptoms may manifest slowly over a number of days or weeks.


Treating Non-severe Breaks


If your injury is not severe, the first step in treatment typically involves a period of waiting while soft-tissue swelling in the area reduces. To encourage this process, your doctor will likely follow a common protocol of rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE). This requires staying off your injured foot, treating it at regular intervals with an ice pack or other cold source, wearing a compression bandage or specialized stocking, and keeping your foot elevated at or slightly above the level of your heart. Your doctor may also immobilize your foot with a splint or cast to allow further healing.


Treating Extensive Injuries


If the interior of your bone is relatively intact, RICE treatment and immobilization are frequently sufficient to provide pain relief and proper recovery. However, if the bone interior is significantly deformed, or if the nearby joint within your foot is also injured, you may require additional surgical or nonsurgical intervention to avoid any future development of chronic pain.


Nonsurgical intervention involves a technique called a closed reduction. In this procedure, your orthopedic surgeon will physically manipulate the position of your calcaneus from the outside while you are under general anesthesia. If this method is ineffective, or the break in your bone is severe, your injury will require a surgical repair. Typically, surgery begins with the removal of any dead tissue. This is followed by the placement of plates or screws to secure the fragmented sections of bone. As an alternative, your surgeon may insert stabilizing pins or screws directly through your skin into the interior of the calcaneus.








Outcomes


Long-term relief of calcaneus pain depends upon the success of your procedure. Surgical repair is effective in 70 to 80 percent of relatively uncomplicated cases. However, these numbers drop sharply when numerous bone fragments are present. See your surgeon for more details.

If your bone spurs reduce your range of motion or cause severe pain, surgery may be required. Most often, bone spurs are removed in open surgery, where the physician will open the skin around a joint. If bone spurs are left untreated, they may break off and become loose bodies. These loose bodies can float around the joint or become lodged somewhere, making movement even more painful or difficult.

What Is The Difference Between Ppo And Hmo Insurance

What is the Difference Between PPO and HMO Insurance?


Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs) are two common types of managed care health insurance plans. There are similarities between the two plans, for instance, they both cover a variety of medical, surgical and hospital services and some also include coverage for prescription drugs. However it is important to know the differences between the two in order to make the best decision on which coverage type is right for you.


HMO Overview








If you enroll in an HMO, typically you must receive all your medical care through the plan. Generally, you will select a primary care physician (PCP) who coordinates your care. The primary care physician is responsible for referring you to specialists when needed, and failure to see your PCP first may result in your doctor's visit not being covered. An HMO plan is a good choice if you are willing to use certain providers in exchange for lower out-of-pocket costs.


Why a PCP?


A PCP is usually a general, family or internal medicine doctor (internist), or a pediatrician. With an HMO plan, the primary care physician is part of a medical group and is paid a flat rate per assigned patient each month, whether or not any care is provided. The PCP accepts lower contracted rates for procedures in exchange for receiving payment from the insurance carrier for each patient.


HMO Medical Costs


With an HMO, when you see your PCP, you are responsible for making a co-payment. A co-payment is a fixed fee you pay when you see a doctor, have a prescription filled or are admitted to the hospital. There may or may not be a deductible, which is the amount you are responsible for paying before the insurance kicks in.


Network


An HMO pays benefits only when you use doctors and hospitals in the plan's network. A network is the group of doctors, hospitals and other health care providers contracted to provide services to the insurance carrier's members for less than their usual fees. If you use an out-of-network provider, your insurance will not pay for the procedure unless it is a life-threatening emergency or when your insurance provider has given prior authorization.


PPO Overview


With a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), you typically pay less for care when you use in-network providers-doctors, hospitals and pharmacies that are part of the PPO network. Depending on your health insurance plan, expenses incurred by services provided by out-of-network health professionals may not be covered or covered only in part by your insurance company. The plan does not require you to select a primary care physician nor do you need a referral to see a specialist.


PPO Medical Costs


A PPO has a deductible for most services prior to the insurance covering a portion of the medical expenses. Once the deductible is met, there may be a coinsurance, which is money you are required to pay for services up to a maximum amount, referred to as the out of pocket (OOP) maximum. Co-insurance is specified by a percentage. For example, if your co-insurance is 20 percent, your insurance will pay the remaining 80 percent of the contracted rate. The out of pocket maximum will vary depending on your policy terms.


Network


With a PPO plan, you decide whether you want to use in-network doctors or not. If you use a provider who is not in your insurance carrier's contracted network, your co-payment, deductible and co-insurance costs will be higher, sometimes significantly so. The provider may also balance-bill you for the visit, which means you will be responsible for the difference between what your insurance carrier allows for the procedure and the price actually charged. If you use an in-network provider, balance billing is not allowed.

Instructions


Use Vitamin E to Reduce Scars


1. Buy vitamin E in oil or capsule form. If you choose capsule form, you will need a sterile pin as well as the capsule, to poke the capsule and expel some of th vitamin E oil.


2. Clean the scar or wound area very carefully. Vitamin E is not antibacterial or anti-fungal. If fungus or bacteria is on the area where the scar or wound is located, unless you clean it properly, the vitamin E oil may trap the bacteria and provide fertile breeding grounds for an infection.


3. Expel some oil onto a cotton swab. If you use the vitamin E capsule, poke the outer shell of the capsule and squeeze the oil onto the cotton swab. Be careful not to touch the oil directly with your hands, or to spill the oil on clothing or upholstery.


4. Dab the vitamin E oil on the scar or wound. Lightly coat the area with the vitamin E oil. Do not rub the oil in; you want to dab carefully.








5. Cover the area with a light layer of gauze if you are concerned about the vitamin E oil getting on fabric, in eyes, or on upholstery. Do not use a bandage over the vitamin E oil; this can trap bacteria or fungus as well.


6. Keep the vitamin E oil on the scar or wound for at least 4-5 hours before washing the area. Wash the area after 8 hours, to remove trapped bacteria or fungus.


7. Apply vitamin E to the scar or wound at least once a day for a few weeks, or until the wound has healed. For scars, you may need to apply vitamin E oil for one to two months for best results.

Instructions


Focusing on Breathing to Become Centered


1. Sit comfortably on the floor in a quiet place, cross-legged, with your spine straight and your hands resting on your lap. You may sit in a straight-backed chair if you prefer.


2. Adjust your position so that you are balanced on the bones of your buttocks, keeping your back as straight as possible so that you can feel the floor beneath you.








3. Close your eyes. Take in a deep breath and let it out completely. Continue this inhalation and exhalation while focusing your attention on the sound and movement of your breathing.


4. Observe the motion of your ribs as you breathe in and out, as well as the natural expansion and contraction of the muscles in your body.


5. Keep focusing on your breathing, which should become slower as you become more relaxed, allowing your mind to begin to feel calm and steady.


6. Allow yourself to return from meditation gradually. Slowly open your eyes only when you are ready, taking in the room a little at a time.


7. Associate a word, phrase or image with this grounded, centered state. Over time, thinking about this image or chanting this word over and over as a mantra will allow you to return to this state more quickly in times of stress.


Visualization Exercise


8. Imagine your breathing reaching into the floor as a tree reaching its roots into the earth. The image of a tree is often used since it embodies the ideas of stability and connectedness. With every breath, imagine the breath in your lungs leaving your body and flowing down deeper and deeper into the ground until it reaches Earth's core.


9. Inhale and visualize your breath pulling up from the center of the planet, bringing warmth and energy with it, while expelling your stress and worry as you exhale, pushing this energy into the ground.


10. Hold the energy in your center for a few moments on each inhale and exhale. Allow the warmth and energy you are visualizing to course through you, pulsing through your arms and legs and into your hands, feet, neck and out through your head.








11. Focus on your body and spine as you breathe. Imagine your spine becoming the trunk of the tree, pulling healthy energy from the ground. Visualize your stress and worry releasing into Earth's core as you exhale. See this negative energy dissolved by Earth's heat.


12. Open your eyes and stand, slowly, visualizing your feet as roots into the soil. Stretch out your arms and become aware of your peripheral vision. Continue to breathe in the same deep manner as before, allowing your breathing to return slowly to normal as you move out of the meditative state.

The Logan College of Chiropractic has been in existence for 75 years. It was founded by Hugh B. Logan in 1935, with a purpose of educating potential students in the field of chiropractic. The Doctor of Chiropractic Degree requires that its applicants have at least 90 credit hours of study. Potential students must also have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. A chiropractor, who holds a doctorate, must provide a letter of recommendation. Three reference letters are also required, along with a personal interview. Students must also supply an essay detailing their reason for wishing to gain acceptance into the program. There are also physical requirements, as the position involves the physical maneuvering of patients. Enrollment occurs in January, May, and September, annually. Students are requested to allow six months for application processing.

D'Youville College


D'Youville College's program is noted as being New York's first liberal arts program offering a doctorate of chiropractic program of its type. Its purpose is to provide its students with a biological sciences background, chiropractic practices, diagnostic instruction, and basic patient care. Students wishing to gain admittance may do so by entering a program that allows for the initial completion of a bachelor's degree in biology. The second option, for which a student must have completed 90 credits of college, with classes including, but not limited to, three credits in Psychology, six in English Language, and 15 credits in the Humanities or Social Science. Palmer College of Chiropractic


Palmer College of Chiropractic requires its applicants to have 90 college credits, with a 48 credit focus in required courses. Students must have 15 credits in the Humanities and Social Sciences, three credits in English, and three credits in Psychology, in addition to a variety of science courses. A grade point average of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0 is required, as well as a letter of recommendation from a faculty member and one from a doctor in the field. What Is Proper Posture







Proper posture occurs when the body has three natural curves in the neck, upper and lower back and there is no pain. Each person may have a different spinal structure, but if a person experiences any pain, that suggests poor posture or a structural issue that must be addressed.


Identification


Proper posture is when the skull is evenly stacked above the mid-line of the shoulders. Were someone to stand next to a wall and an imaginary plumb line be drawn, that line would show the head squarely on top of the spine, shoulders over the chest, chest over the hips, hips over the knees, and knees over the ankles.


Features


Proper posture occurs when there is no pain or discomfort in the spine such as neck or low back pain from slouching or other bad habits. Proper posture allows the head to be supported comfortably on the spine. The three spinal curves, cervical (neck), upper-mid thoracic and lumbar (low back) are sustained. These curves act as shock absorbers.


Types


Strictly speaking, proper posture means a tall spine with the three spinal curves intact. Examples of poor posture include Dowager's hump, an obvious hunchback. Kyphosis is another term for this. Swapback or lordosis is a very exaggerated, arched lower back. Each of these conditions can be painful.


Function


Proper posture allows the spinal fluid to travel up and down the spine evenly, and motor impulses for movement are easily relayed to the muscles. When the spine is healthy, there is no compression in the vertrabrae that creates pain. Proper posture ensures the lungs can fully expand and contract and the internal organs are in a normal position, not crowded or asymmetrical.


Misconceptions


There is a misconception that a ramrod straight posture is correct. The opposite is true: a flattened, straight spine creates tension and pain in the neck, jaw, upper and lower back. One example of this is a military stance. However, even these people do not work in a military stance, protecting the natural curves in the spine. A healthy spine has curves, has extension (height) and allows ease of movement without any pain.

Hemochromatosis is an iron overload disorder where a persons iron levels are too high. The iron is not disposed of properly and begins to effect the tissue of the person's organs. If diagnosed early a person can live a long and healthy life. Men are usually diagnosed between the ages of 40-60 and women after menopause. Managing Hemochromatosis is easy compared to many other disorders.


Instructions


1. Find out your family history. This disorder is inherited. That means if you know that your family has a history of it, you can have routine exams and catch the disease in yourself early. This is a great way to manage the disease among your family.


2. Get your routine exams. Your doctor will order blood tests to manage your iron levels. When the iron levels become to high you will need to take the next step.


3. Have a phlebotomy treatment. Phlebotomy is the easiest and best way to manage Hemochromatosis, It helps remove the excess iron and bring your blood back to normal. Phlebotomy treatments are every week at first and then eventually slow down to every 2-4 months for life. That is only 6-3 times per year which is highly manageable and won't interfere too much with your life.


4. Watch your diet. Hemochromatosis can take an active step in reducing the amount of iron they eat. You can do this by eliminating iron rich foods or by purchasing The Hemochromatosis Cookbook. This is a great way to manage the amount of iron in your blood and reduce the amount of phlebotomy treatments you will need.


5. Deferoxamine can be used to manage Hemochromatosis in rare cases. It is a medication that can be taken that sticks to the iron and helps eliminate it from the body.


6. Women can manage hemochromatosis naturally. They get rid of blood naturally through their monthly cycles. They usually don't need to begin managing the hemochromatosis until after they have reached menopause and no longer get rid of blood naturally each month.

What Are The Causes Of A Heat Rash







Heat rash, often called prickly heat or summer rash, is most prevalent in babies. Heat rash can also affect adults in hot, humid climates. Heat rash is a red or pinkish rash that can be found anywhere on the body, most especially in the folds of skin and areas covered by clothing.








Overdressing and Exercise


Heat rash can occur when a baby is overdressed or wrapped too warmly in a blanket or in fabrics that do not let a body breathe. It should be noted that heat rash can occur in any baby in very hot weather. In adults and older children, exercise or any hard work that involves overexertion can cause heat rash. Certain fabrics can also cause heat rash.


Medicines


Some prescription medicines that are used to treat bladder problems, ADHD, blood pressure and acne have been know to cause heat rash. Many over-the-counter drugs will explain on their labels if a person taking them should avoid the sun.


The Rash


Heat rash looks like small dots or tiny pimples. It is usually red or pink in color. Clothing and scratching will irritate the rash. It is usually not painful.


Treatment


Most heat rash will clear up in three to four days with no medical attention. Remove clothing and let the skin air dry after baths. Apply cool washcloths to the affected area and clip fingernails on a baby so the baby cannot scratch the area. If overactive, rest is recommended. Keep sleeping areas cool.


Creams And Powders


Stay away from most creams or ointments with the exception of calamine lotion or hydrocortizone creams. A light dusting of corn starch may help prevent heat rash in a body's folds. Do not use talcum powder on babies--it can be dangerous for a child to inhale.


When To Seek Medical Attention


If the rash worsens, if there is pain and swelling or if the area is hot, seek medical advice. Also, if a fever is present, if there are red streaks radiating from the rash, if lymph nodes become swollen, or if pus drains from the rash, call a doctor.


Is Heat Rash Dangerous?


Heat rash is not dangerous, but if the baby or adult is not cooled down, heat exhaustion or heat stroke could occur.

What Is Biafine

Biafine is a topical non-steroidal medication available in the United States for treating burns, wounds and irritations. The clinical benefits of Biafine to stimulate all phases of wound healing have been studied in the United States prior to U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval in 2006, and these benefits underscore the heritage of the product's use in France for over 25 years. Biafine contains non-toxic ingredients in an herbal base and its use includes wound management, adjunct to radiation therapy, burn dressings, post-treatment for cosmetic and plastic surgery and dermatology treatments (such as sunburn).


Significance








Biafine is manufactured by Laboratoire Medix in France and distributed by Ortho Dermatology (OrthoNeutrogena) in the United States as a prescription topical for wounds and burns. Biafine has been used in France for more than 25 years, and it contains non-toxic and herbal ingredients. It was approved in 2006 for prescription use in the United States. Biafine hydrates skin tissue, adding water to healing tissue, softening scars, promoting the body's antibacterial activity and reducing contamination. It is safe to use Biafine daily, as when changing wound dressings.


Function


Biafine is a topical, water-based emulsion that penetrates the skin to hydrate the underlying tissues. The formulation is an emollient, which softens scarred and dead superficial tissue upon penetration and hydration, to promote healing. Biafine enhances autolytic debridement, which is the body's mechanism to eliminate dead tissue as part of the healing process by enhancing macrophage recruitment to the wound site. A moist dressing and increased macrophage recruitment for natural healing reduce the need to remove dead and scarred tissue surgically. As an emulsion, Biafine also provides a barrier similar to hydrogels which protect the wounds against further bacterial contamination.


Approved Indications


Biafine is used to treat burns, skin irritations, superficial wounds and dryness. Its popularity overseas has been for its hydrating properties and effectiveness on sunburned skin and scrapes. Clinical studies were conducted in the United States for burns, wound healing and radiation.


According to the Biafine package insert, the FDA has approved Biafine for use in full thickness wounds, pressure sores and dermal ulcers (includes lower leg ulcers), superficial wounds, first- and second-degree burns, sunburns, dermal donor and graft site management, radiation dermatitis and minor abrasions.


Application


Wound and burn management involve methods to enhance tissue regeneration and to minimize infection during the healing process. Since autolytic debridement is the preferred method for removing dead and scarred tissue, moist dressings are needed and must be changed daily. Biafine is liberally applied to the skin and covered with a dressing, such as gauze. The dressing is changed every 24 hours, with reapplication of Biafine.


Effects


While Biafine is an emulsion, it is non-comedogenic because it stimulates tissue debridement, hydration and regeneration. It promotes antibacterial activity. Initial application may produce a slight tingling sensation from the penetrating properties of the formulation. Biafine has been studied in clinical trials for use after plastic and cosmetic surgery.


Contraindications and Warnings


Biafine is for topical use only and should not be used on bleeding wounds and skin rashes (especially those caused by an allergic reaction). All wounds, burns and irritations should be cleaned before application and bandaging. Biafine is a prescription medication and should be applied as directed by a healthcare professional, particularly when used as an adjunct to radiation treatment and dermal grafts. Can A Dermoid Cyst Cause Weight Gain

Description


A dermoid cyst is one type of cyst that can form in or on the ovaries. These cysts often become extremely painful, as they sometimes grow quite large. Although dermoid cysts are common in women of childbearing age, they are different from other types of ovarian cysts in that they may contain skin, cartilage or bone tissue, hair follicles and teeth in addition to fat tissue. The reason for this is that a dermoid cyst develops from cells in the ovary that produce the egg. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), it is not uncommon for dermoid cysts to occur on both ovaries.


Symptoms


Even though symptoms vary among women, common symptoms associated with most ovarian cysts include nausea or vomiting, pain during intercourse, tenderness in the breasts, painful menstrual periods, pressure or pain in the abdomen, a dull ache in the lower back and thighs, abnormal bleeding and weight gain. Pain can sometimes come on suddenly. Other symptoms that women report include extreme fatigue, frequent urination and changes in bowel patterns. Most dermoid cysts are benign and not cancerous. However, even benign masses can continue to grow. Malignant cysts occur more often following menopause.


Weight Gain








A cyst on the ovaries can cause a woman to gain weight that may be difficult to lose. Even when women succeed at losing weight in other areas of the body, they may be unable to lose stubborn pounds in the abdomen, retaining added inches around the waistline. While dermoid cysts typically average about 4 to 6 inches in diameter, many grow to be the size of a softball, which means that a mass can be 11 or 12 inches in diameter. In some cases, a tumor has been known to grow as large as 17 inches in diameter. Large dermoid cysts on the ovary can cause the abdomen to swell. Some women experience extreme bloating and report that they actually look several months pregnant. Dermoid cysts are more likely to occur in younger women whose bodies produce higher levels of estrogen. High insulin levels can also cause the body to produce more hormones, which may cause a dermoid cyst to eventually grow in size. Steady weight gain in women is often attributed to female hormonal imbalance. In certain cases, gaining a few pounds on the scale may be attributed to chronic constipation, a symptom some women with dermoid cysts on the ovaries suffer with.


Treatment


Surgery is the only way to remove an ovarian dermoid cyst, and it is often recommended, particularly if the cyst causes severe pain. Dermoid cysts are different from some other kinds of ovarian cysts in that this type of cyst does not go away on its own. Excruciating pain may be a sign that the cyst has ruptured or is twisting the ovary. However, unless emergency surgery is required, an ovarian dermoid cyst is usually removed by laparoscopy, a surgical procedure in which small incisions are made in the abdomen.

1. To begin, just tell your body to relax as you take a long, deep inhalation in. Think peace as you slowly, slowly exhale out. Repeat thinking peaceful thoughts as you inhale in and releasing thoughts as you exhale out. Close your eyes and concentrate on the breath.Place both of your hands, palms down, at the top of your head. Hold your hands there for 3 minutes as you continue to breathe in peaceful thoughts and exhale tension in your body. Think of Reiki energy coming through your hands into the top of your head. Allow your worries and concerns to melt away.


2. Place the palms of your hands over your eyes and hold there for three minutes as you breathe. Feel Reiki healing energy flowing through your hands into your eyes. Feel the stress and tension leaving your body with each exhalation.


3. Place the palms of your hands over each of your ears. The left palm of your hand should be covering your left ear, and the right palm of your hand should be covering your right ear. Hold there for three minutes as you continue to breathe in peace and exhale worry or pain. Know that Reiki energy is flowing from your hands into your ears. Feel the warmth.


4. Move your hands to your chest and place the palms of your hands on your chest. Feel your breath begin to slow even more as you breathe peaceful images and loving thoughts into your body. Feel your body sink into the mattress more and more with each exhalation you take. Slow your breath and relax your body. Hold this hand position for three to five minutes.








5. Place the palms of your hands over the bottom of your ribcage. Continue your slow breathing in and out as you hold your hands in this position for three minutes. Feel the Reiki energy warm your body as you release the pain and worry of the day.


6. Move your hands to your navel and place the palms of your hands on either side of your navel with the tips of your middle fingers touching. Hold this position for three minutes as you breathe in and out. Feel your stomach rise and fall with each inhalation and exhalation. Try to slow the inhalations and exhalations down even more. Find the breaths peaceful and loving.


7. You will now move your hands into the last hand position by sliding your hands down to your 2 inches below your navel. This is your Hara, the center for the breath. Feel peace and tranquility fill your Hara center as you continue to breathe in and out for three minutes.When you have finished the hand positions, lay your arms at your sides. With your eyes closed, continued to breathe in and feel the breath as a wave of loving energy over your body. Exhale the breath down your body to your toes and inhale the breath back up to your head. Continue the breath until you are sufficiently tired to fall asleep. Some people have trouble when they first begin to practice breathing techniques. This is normal. Use Reflexology For Migraines

Instructions

1. Spread towel across the end of table.


2. Instruct volunteer to lie down on table with her feet on the towel.


3. Sit down at the volunteer’s feet.


4. Place your palms on volunteer’s feet for a few moments.


5. Gently squeeze both feet all over.


6. Starting with the left foot, press your right thumb into base of the heel, on the right side, and advance thumb upwards in small increments until you reach the top of the pinkie toe. Start at the base of the heel again, advancing upwards until you reach the next toe. Keep doing this until the whole foot is covered and then do it on the right foot.


7. Slide thumbs simultaneously (left thumb on left foot and right thumb on right foot) across the feet from side to side, up to the top of the feet and then slide your thumbs down to base of the heel and make circular movements all over both feet.


8. Press thumbs into each toe, 10 times on each toe, covering all areas of each toe. Do this to both sides of each toe.


9. Press your thumb into the center of the left big toe (plantar side of foot) and hold for a few moments. Do the same to the right toe.


10. Circle prominent bones on the outside of the ankles with your fingers, seven times.








11. Stroke the top of the left foot with your thumb, alternating strokes. Stroke the top of the right foot with your thumb, alternating strokes.


12. Simultaneously slide both thumbs up to center of the bottom of the ball of the foot. Press your thumbs into a point and hold for a few moments.

Reduce Cortisol In The Body

Cortisol is sometimes called the "stress hormone" because your body releases more of it when you are under stress. 3. Get plenty of sleep. Increased cortisol exposure can lead to insomnia, which in turn can add to your stress. Following steps 1 and 2 should help you to sleep better. Other things that can help you sleep better include going to bed and getting up at the same times every day and taking a sleep aid.


4. See a psychologist or counselor if necessary. If stress-reducing techniques don't seem to be working, it may be time to seek professional help. The Mayo Clinic says both your genetics and your life experiences play a role in how you deal with stress, and a genetic predisposition to stress or some extremely stressful event from your past, such as abuse, may make it more difficult for you to deal with stress. A trained professional can help you find ways to deal with stress.


5. See a doctor. If reducing stress doesn't seem to be reducing your cortisol levels, it's time to get checked out to see if there's another cause. Athough stress is the primary cause of increased cortisol levels, there are other causes, such as illnesses. A tumor on your pituitary gland can cause too much cortisol to be released into your body. Other tumors, such as those in the adrenal glands, can also lead to overproduction of cortisol. And be careful if you are taking corticosteroid injections to deal with arthritis or another condition. Repeated injections of this drug can also lead to high cortisol levels in the body, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Sinus pain and pressure can be very unpleasant and debilitating, and the buildup can often lead to infection, which may cause further symptoms such as sore throat and headache. Causes of Sinus Pain and Pressure


Pain and pressure in the sinuses are caused by mucus buildup in the sinus passages. Allergies are often the main cause of mucus buildup. Draining the sinuses is a natural way to prevent this problem.


Sinus Massage Techniques


Heat a pot of water until it begins to boil. Remove water from stove and allow to cool just long enough so that steam is not scorching hot.


Place a towel over your head and lean over the pot of water, as close as you comfortably can to the steam, and inhale. This will open your sinus cavities.


Start with your middle fingers in the center of your forehead above your eyebrows. Begin to massage, gradually increasing and releasing the pressure in a gentle rhythmic motion for at least a minute.


Next, move your fingers sideways down towards the temples, massaging for another minute, then sweep your fingers down to the sides of your nose and repeat the technique with your middle fingers, applying and releasing pressure.


Now with your index fingers at the top of your nose, apply pressure alternately with each finger, moving down the entire length of the nose. Repeat for one minute.








The goal is to move mucus down to the nasal passages. Once you have finished the massage, gently blow your nose to remove any mucus that has been moved down.


Repeat the process again, starting with the inhalation of the steam and following with the massage.


Extra Techniques


Massage both sides of your neck right below your head to prevent tension and sinus pressure.


Massage the web of skin between thumb and index finger for 1 to 2 minutes to relieve sinus pressure and pain.

The tailbone is actually not one bone but rather several bones located in the lower back. Bruises and breaks cause pain, which is referred to as coccygodynia or coccydynia. This pain can range from mild pain to severe pain.


Causes

Placing an ice pack on your tailbone for between 20 and 30 minutes every 3 to 5 hours may provide relief until the pain goes away. Doctors may prescribe pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medicines as well. Finally, you should avoid constipation by ingesting plenty of fiber and fluids while your tailbone is healing.


Prevention


Unfortunately, a bruised tailbone is generally not preventable because the majority of bruised tailbones are caused by unexpected accidents. However, if you are engaging in contact sports where a fall is more likely to occur, you should wear protective equipment to cushion your tailbone from potential falls.

Instructions


Exercise 1


1. Keep your legs straight, gently bend forward, and allow your arms and upper torso to drop toward the floor.


2. Relax. Let your arms dangle loosely and swing them back and forth through your legs to the count of 5.


3. Straighten your body until you are standing upright.


4. Bring your arms up and stretch toward the ceiling.


5. Hold the stretch for a moment, then relax back into a standing position.


6. Lower your arms slowly to the sides of your body.


7. Repeat the exercise three times.


Exercise 2


8. Keep your head level and your neck still.


9. Bring your left shoulder forward, lift it and roll it backwards.


10. Repeat three times.


11. Repeat the exercise with your right shoulder.


12. Use both shoulders at once.


Exercise 3


13. Draw your left hand into a tight ball and hold it for the count of 5.


14. Relax your hand.








15. Perform the exercise five times.


16. Repeat the exercise with your right hand.


17.Finally, repeat the exercise with both hands together five times.

Oil, also known as petroleum or crude, is a mineral extracted from the earth and refined into fuels such as kerosene, diesel, and gasoline. History








Oil first began to be widely used as a source of energy in the mid-19th century, when it was employed primarily as a method of producing heat. With the popularization of the automobile in the early 20th century, oil's use expanded, as its refined product, gasoline, was used to power the internal combustion engines of cars. It was later used to make jet fuel. According to the International Energy Agency, in 2009 the world consumed approximately 85 million barrels of oil per day, most in the form of transportation fuels. Although some oil is still burned for heat and electricity, it is less economically efficient in these areas than other energy sources, such as natural gas.


Significance


Because so much transportation is dependent upon oil, the mineral plays a critical part in the world economy. Spikes in the price of oil, such as those experienced in 2008, can cause inflation and reduce economic output and productivity. The need for countries to have reliable access to oil can influence political relationships, with oil-exporting countries such as Saudi Arabia and Venezuela using their resource as a bargaining chip. This reliance on oil as a source of energy has led to the rise of alternative fuels, such as biofuels, which are meant to offer a substitute to oil.


Dangers


According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the tail-pipe emissions from gasoline-burning automobiles is one of the leading sources of greenhouse gas emissions, which serve to exacerbate the effects of global climate change. Misconceptions








The advent of biofuels has led to speculation that oil will soon be replaced as a source of energy.
