Use Garlic For Medicinal Purposes

Garlic

Garlic has been hailed as a healing herb for thousands of years. It has been used by primitive vets as well as early healers as far back as 5,000 years ago in the Middle East, and 3,000 years ago in China. It is an antioxidant, an antimicrobial (anti-biotic, anti-viral, and anti-fungal), and promotes great blood sugar levels as well as cholesterol levels by lowering LDL cholesterol.

Instructions

Using Garlic for in Food for Health Benefits

1. Ingesting garlic regularly in your diet is one of the best ways to take advantage of the properties of garlic.

2. Put fresh crushed garlic on meat. This is a great way to make meat healthier to eat. Anti-microbial properties take effect when allicin is activated by crushing a clove.

3. Mince garlic cloves and add them into greens or salads to garner the effects of raw garlic. The oils from the cloves inhibit blood clotting, lower cholesterol, and reduce levels of nitrate in stomachs.

Garlic Oil Usage

4. Help stave off infection by treating an open wound with a garlic oil soaked cloth. You can also wash wounds in garlic for the same purpose.

5. Garlic rubs and poultices using the natural oils of garlic can be used and placed on infected areas of the skin, as well as on areas of the body that are infected inside, usually the chest and back for respiratory ailments.

6. Inhaling garlic oils in a diffuser (or placed on a cotton ball) can treat respiratory ailments.

7. Feed a clove to your pets to help prevent fleas. Garlic is part of the onion family, which is poisonous to dogs. Dogs may have garlic in limited quantities, if they are not allergic to it.

Descriptions Of Yoga Poses

The Lotus entails sitting cross-legged with each foot resting on the opposite thigh.

The postures of hatha yoga, known as asanas, are designed to increase strength, endurance and flexibility. Over many generations, these asanas acquired simple names for convenience, including The Wheel, Downward Facing Dog and The Lord of the Dance. Familiarizing yourself with the names of these poses and their descriptions allows you to move through classes more easily; when your instructor calls for Cat and Cow, you'll know exactly what to do.

Shapes and Objects

Many yoga positions are described visually, such as the Wheel Pose.

Many yoga postures are named after the shapes made by your body. In Triangle, for example, you stand with your legs 3 to 4 feet apart, arms outstretched and torso bent sideways parallel to the ground. The stance of your legs then creates a triangular shape with the base formed by your heels and the apex at your pelvis. Balancing on your palms and your feet with your body arcing upward in a back bend creates a rounded shape to the spine; this asana is called Chakrasana or The Wheel Pose.

The Natural World

Animal imagery abounds in yoga asanas; this classic is called "Downward Facing Dog".

Many asanas are named after common animals. To perform Cat and Cow, kneel on all fours and first round your back up toward the ceiling like an angry cat, then gently reverse the curve in your spine to a gentle arch. Another classic yoga posture, Downward Facing Dog, asks you to place your hands and feet on the floor and straighten your arms and legs while shifting your hips backward, like a dog stretching itself after resting.

Directional Terms

Sanskrit terminology sometimes employs the compass to describe postures, such as West Facing Pose.

Some asanas have brief instructions built into them, such as Janu Sirsasana which literally translates as Knee and Head Pose. To perform the pose, sit with one leg bent and that heel tucked against your inner thigh then lean forward and stretch your head towards your extended knee.Translation of yoga terms from their original Sanskrit forms reveals that some yoga posture names employ compass directions. A simple Seated Forward Bend, in which you sit on the floor, legs extended together in front of you and hinge forward from the hips while reaching toward your feet, is called Paschimottanasana, or West Facing Pose.

Mythology

Mythology inspires the description of some asanas, as this "Lord of the Dance" is named in honor of the Hindu god Shiva.

According to "Yoga Journal," several asanas are named after figures from the folklore of India. An example is Garudasana, or King of the Eagles, in which you stand on one foot, arms and legs intertwined. Sitting on the floor in a split position with one leg stretched out in front and the other behind you is called Hanumanasana, or King of the Monkeys. The Lord of the Dance, named after an aspect of the Hindu deity Shiva, requires you to lean forward in space while lifting one leg behind you, holding that foot in your hand and balancing on the other leg.

Facts Obesity Surgery

Obesity surgery, or bariatric surgery, is a surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia in order to help the patient lose weight. Obesity surgery is usually performed only in cases of morbid obesity, where the condition is life threatening.

Types

There are several different types of obesity surgery available. Some, such as gastric bypass, reroute the digestive system. Another popular procedure is Lap-Band, which involves placing a flexible silicone band around the top portion of the stomach, causing the patient to feel fuller after eating less food.

Eligibility

To be eligible for bariatric surgery, a person must have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or a BMI between 35 and 40 with co-morbidities present. Co-morbidities are other serious medical conditions related to the obesity, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

Cost

Obesity surgery may or may not be covered by insurance. The cost for most procedures ranges from approximately $17,000 to $35,000.

Results and Maintenance

Most patients lose between 25 and 75 percent of their excess body weight. Some patients may need additional surgeries, and the Lap-Band requires regular "fill" procedures to inject saline solution into the band.

Complications

Some common side effects of weight loss surgery include "dumping," which includes nausea, vomiting, and cramping; poor absorption of food; and vitamin deficiencies. Some side effects can be reduced by eliminating sugar or fat from the diet.

What Herbs Help Strengthen Lungs

The main function of the lungs is to take in oxygen and provide energy to the rest of the body. From a Chinese Medicine perspective, the function is to govern qi or energy and provide defense against external pathogens such as viruses. Herbs that tonify the lungs can be used to strengthen their function and decrease susceptibility to infection.

Shortness of Breath

Ren shen or ginseng root, powerfully tonifies the (qi) energy circulating through the lungs and is especially useful for conditions where shallow breathing, shortness of breath and poor circulation are present.

Increasing Energy

Huang qi or astragulus root stops sweating, releases toxins and strongly raises the (qi) energy in those who are frail or recovering from an illness. The skin is considered to be controlled by the lungs and is the largest and most exterior portion of the body, so loss of fluids through the pores can cause dehydration and loss of valuable minerals.

Strengthen Immunity

Sheng jiang or fresh ginger is a warm herb used widely to strengthen a weakened immune system, stop cough and loosen phlegm associated with a cold, flu and other chronic lung disorders. Known to relieve indigestion and nausea, when grated and combined with honey in boiling water relieves cough, and when applied alone as a hot liquid wash induces sweating to relieve fever.

Cold Limbs

Rou gui or cinnamon bark is another herb known for its ability to warm the kidney yang in Chinese medicine. This is important in ensuring vitality and warmth in the body and aids in common symptoms such as wheezing, severe sweating, and cold limbs associated with lung diseases.

Toxins

Licorice lubricates the lungs and counteracts toxicity. Boiled with half the amount of ginger and strained, it is consumed as soup to treat abscessed lungs, suppurate pneumonia and bronchitis without cough.

Cough

Other common herbs useful for colds and coughing are spearmint and peppermint which have a cooling effect on inflamed lungs and throat and diluted garlic, which can be used for whooping cough in children.

Excessive Yawning

About Excessive Yawning

Excessive yawning is defined as experiencing 1 to 4 yawns per minute over an extended period of time. Most doctors believe that yawning is triggered by a low level of oxygen in the blood. Yawning causes the blood oxygen level to raise, improving alertness and stamina. Yawning is usually associated with being tired or bored, but it is usually due to lack of oxygen. However, frequent yawning does not necessarily mean your blood oxygen level is low. Excessive yawning is the symptom of several health disorders, so if it is something you experience on a regular basis, talk you your doctor.

Significance

Excessive yawning can be a symptom of several maladies, including epilepsy, progressive supranuclear palsy, brain tumors, anxiety, heart attack, encephalitis and multiple sclerosis. Excessive yawning may also be the side effect of a medication you are currently taking, including antidepressants and medications for Parkinson's Disease. Do not be alarmed if you are experiencing excessive yawning, but see a doctor promptly.

Types

If excessive yawning is your only symptom, a doctor will probably ask you to report back to him if you are experiencing any other symptoms. At this point, you may want to get as much rest as possible and be on the lookout for accompanying symptoms. Getting plenty of rest should be your first method of attack, but if the excessive yawning still continues, consider getting blood tests and possibly a CAT scan done by your doctor.

Identification

The most common maladies related to excessive yawning are sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea and even mononucleosis. Your doctor may also suggest, if you have no accompanying severe symptoms, that you are yawning frequently because you have a high sensitivity to other people yawning. The triggering of the need to yawn is usually visual and psychological, so this is not an entirely strange diagnosis. If these diagnoses are addressed and the patient is not taking any medication that may cause frequent yawning, more tests should be done in order to determine a potentially more serious cause.

Misconceptions

Excessive yawning does not necessarily mean a person is exhausted or fatigued. When you are in public situations, however, people may misconstrue your yawning symptom as being bored or tired. In order to minimize the noticeably of your frequent yawning, cover your mouth with your hand or a tissue while yawning. If excessive yawning continues, make an appointment with your doctor.

Warning

Do not allow your case of excessive yawning to go untreated if you feel it is causing you problems. Your doctor will work with you in finding your correct diagnosis. If you have any serious symptoms accompanying your excessive yawning, including migraines, fainting, numbness in the extremities or blurred vision, see a doctor immediately and request thorough testing. Throughout the process of finding a diagnosis, get plenty of rest and monitor the excessive yawning throughout the period of searching for a diagnosis.

Hair Extensions And Growth Help

Hair extensions help you get the look of long hair in less time.

If you want long hair, you can either wait for your hair to grow, or get a fast fix with hair extensions. Hair extensions have come a long way since their invention, and are more convenient than waiting for hair growth.

History

Hair extensions date back as far as 3400 B.C. The Egyptians used both synthetic and human hair extensions, and the extensions were added to natural hair through braiding and knotting. Popularity has ebbed and flowed since these early hair extensions, but there has been a recent surge in interest due to the popularity of hair extensions among today's celebrities.

Types

Hair extensions differ depending on the type of fiber used and the method of attaching the extensions. Numerous types exist, although the most common are synthetic and human hair extensions. Attachment methods also vary widely, and include bonding, gluing, non-glue microbonding, wefting, and clipping in.

Considerations

While you're waiting to grow longer hair, extensions are a good options. Look for a temporary attachment method that will not harm your natural hair. There is no way to make your hair grow faster, so you should take care of your natural hair to prevent breakage and loss. Eat a nutritious diet high in protein, and avoid stress. Reduce your use of heat when styling, and condition your hair three or four times a week.

Use The Drug Metformin

Metformin is used for the treatment of Type II diabetes. The drug, which comes in pill form, works to stabilize and control the body's blood sugar levels. While the medication may be prescribed in conjunction with insulin, it is not recommended for the treatment of Type I diabetes. Only a physician can determine which type of diabetes a patient suffers from and prescribe the proper medication.

Instructions

1. Make an appointment to obtain a complete physical. Tests to rule out the possibility of diabetes and other common conditions are usually a part of routine screenings. Should Type II diabetes be discovered, speak with your doctor to see if Metformin might be the right drug for you.

2. Make yourself aware of the drug's contraindications. Metformin is not recommend for those suffering from heart, kidney or liver disease. The medication can trigger a dangerous condition known as lactic acidosis. Left unchecked, it can result in severe damage to organs or death.

Metformin may not be prescribed for women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or who are breastfeeding. The drug is dangerous for children under the age of 10.

Anyone taking a test that involves dye injected into the veins should suspend Metformin's use for a few days before the test since the drug can interact with the dye, causing temporary medical issues.

3. Note the drug's interaction with other drugs. Metformin cannot be taken while drinking alcohol since it lowers blood sugar and could result in a risk of lactic acidosis.

Hyperglycemia may result in those taking Metformin along with birth control pills, diet pills, diuretics, phenothiazines, steroids, seizure and thyroid medications, and some drugs that are typically used to treat allergies and colds.

Low blood sugar may result in those taking Metformin with anti-inflammatory medications, beta blockers, MAO inhibitors, probenecids, salicylates and sulfa drugs.

Other medications, such as amiloride, cimetidine, digoxin, furosemide, morphine, nifedipine, ranitidine, procainamide, quinidine, triameterene, trimethoprim and vancomycin, may contraindicate the use of Metformin as well.

4. Contact your physician if you experience any of these side effects: chills, diarrhea, flu-like symptoms, headache, muscle aches and pains, nausea, sudden weight gain or trouble breathing.

5. Report to an emergency room immediately if you experience any of these dangerous side effects: abdominal pain, black outs, chills or cold, dizziness, fever, obstructed or slow heart rhythm, sleepiness, sudden weakness, trouble breathing or vomiting. Also go to an ER if you develop allergic side effects like hives or swelling of the mouth or airways or symptoms of lactic acidosis.

6. Take the dosage amount prescribed for you. It may take your doctor some time to find the right dosage amount and timing for you. Once he has, however, take the drug exactly as instructed.

Metformin is usually taken with a meal since it can upset an empty stomach. The oral medication should not be chewed or crushed, nor should the tablet be broken into pieces since that could cause uneven and incorrect amounts of the drug to enter the body's system incorrectly.

Metformin dosage may change slightly when another illness or virus is also diagnosed. Contact your physician each time such conditions occur to ascertain if dosage amounts of the drug need to be temporarily changed.

If you miss a dose of Metformin, take it as quickly as possible and then skip the next dose.

7. Get regular blood and kidney tests, as outlined by your doctor, to make certain the drug is working effectively without doing any other damage to your health.

8. Avoid low blood sugar, also known as hypoglycemia. Symptoms include black outs, coma, confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, hunger, irregular heartbeat, irritability, seizure, sudden weakness, sweating or tremors.

Always keep sugar available in the event that hypoglycemia occurs. The best options include candy and orange juice.

9. Store the medication at room temperature. Keep it away from heat, light and moisture to preserve the drug's medicinal properties.

Types Of Crystals With Healing Properties

Types of Crystals with Healing Properties

Minerals, including crystals, make up planet Earth. As a human, your biological connection to Earth requires minerals, air and water for survival. Crystals transmit and receive energy and vibrate at a constant rate, making them useful for devices such as computers and watches. Because each crystal transmits energy and oscillates at a single frequency, each type of crystal has certain properties assigned to it, based on healing uses throughout history. Crystals can assist you with physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healing, although scientists report these as placebo effects.

Amethyst

The purple amethyst crystal helps you sleep if you have insomnia and calms and relaxes you from emotional stress. Use amethyst to assist you in meditation. Amethyst also increases memory, decreases diabetes and strengthens your immune and cardiovascular systems-namely, your heart, blood and blood vessels. The amethyst draws in negative energies from any place, making this crystal useful at the workplace and in areas of healing, such as hospitals and therapist offices.

Aquamarine

Use aquamarine when you need to feel calm and if you suffer from anxiety. This blue-green crystal helps to improve your eyesight, helps relieve motion sickness and improves your immune system and cardiovascular system.

Dieting Tips For New Moms

Feta cheese salad

It's natural to put on weight when you're pregnant. Taking the weight off after the baby is born is a little more difficult. However, it's not impossible. If you take a sensible approach toward creating a healthy weight loss diet, you can lose the pregnancy weight and keep it off.

When to Start Dieting

If you're breastfeeding your baby, there's a limit to how much you can diet and still nurse successfully. You may feel distressed about the extra weight you have gained during pregnancy, but there's no hurry to take off the pounds. You can afford to wait until your baby is weaned to start dieting. If you decide to cut back while breastfeeding, be sure to eat healthy foods and drink plenty of water.

Even if you're bottle feeding, you shouldn't cut your calories too severely. Taking care of a baby is hard work, and you need all the energy you can get. So don't cut healthy foods from your diet. Instead, reduce or eliminate your consumption of sweets such as soda, candy, cookies and cake and fats such as butter and gravy. Limit high calorie nutritious foods such as cheese and peanut butter to about an ounce per meal or snack. Also, cut out white starch such as white bread, rice and pasta. Replace these foods with healthier ones such as fruit, vegetable oils and whole grain bread, rice and pasta.

Planning Meals and Snacks

Being up half the night to feed and soothe your baby back to sleep will inevitably take a toll on you. Make sure that you get proper nutrition during the day, but don't allow yourself to indulge in stress-induced eating. Include a serving of protein, starch, vegetables, fruit and fat with each meal. Snack on healthy and satisfying foods such as a slice of whole grain toast or a banana. Avoid fruit juice, which is high in calories but ineffective at satisfying hunger. Instead, drink caffeine-free tea or water throughout the day. Also, make sure you drink two or three glasses of low-fat or skim milk per day.

Don't eliminate entire food groups from your diet or skip meals in an attempt to lose weight. Instead, reduce your calories by taking smaller portions of each food. When you shop, choose foods that have fewer calories per serving whenever possible. If a food has 200 or more calories per serving, only eat half a serving during each meal or snack.

Exercise

You can lose weight with less dieting if you exercise regularly. This can seem difficult when you have a new baby, but it's not impossible. Get a good stroller that you can fit easily in the trunk of your car. An athletic stroller is a good choice if you like to walk, run, jog or rollerblade. Another option is to invest in exercise equipment for your home. Then you can grab a quick workout every day while the baby is sleeping. There are also workout routines you can do with your baby. Check your local bookstore or look online for books or DVDs on exercise with your baby in a safe and enjoyable way.

What Is Leptoprin

Leptoprin is an expensive holistic weight loss aid containing mostly caffeine and amino acids. Marketed by A.G. Waterhouse, the supplement is available on the official website or at other online retailers. A generic brand called Leptopril is sold at discount stores and drugstores. Internet reviews are mainly negative toward this product.

Identification

Leptoprin once contained ephedrine, a substance known to be effective for weight loss, until ephedrine was banned by the United States Food and Drug Administration in 2004. Leptoprin now contains green coffee and green tea as stimulants, along with seven amino acids, and some herbal, fruit and root ingredients. None of these substances has been shown as effective in fat burning or weight loss. The stimulant-free version of Leptoprin has been discontinued.

Considerations

Dietblogtalk comments that although the product relies heavily on amino acids, it does not include the most effective weight loss amino acids. Those are carnitine, phenylalaline and tryptophan, which all have been indicated as efficient fat burners and appetite suppressants.

Expert Insight

Even when the product still contained ephedrine, the Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint against Basic Research, the parent company of A.G. Waterhouse, for making false and unsubstantiated weight loss claims in regard to Leptoprin and another formula which had contained ephedrine, Anorex. They company claimed clinical testing indicated Leptoprin use could cause weight loss of more than 20 lbs., and that evidence showed it could cause weight loss of as much as 147 lbs. in significantly overweight users.

Features

The 147 lb. weight loss testimonial was given in a television ad stating that Leptoprin is "much too expensive and much too powerful for the casual dieter." The ad does not explain why the company sells an exact same version of the product for 1/4 of the cost at Wal-Mart.

Effects

Online reviews are more than three-to-one negative, and that includes from when the product still contained ephedrine. Some people who apparently don't notice how much caffeine is in Leptoprin mention being unable to sleep. The price is a point of contention, since the ingredients are easily found in other products. One reviewer mentioned that for $150 a bottle, the supplement better suck the fat right out of her hips.

Habits Of The Wolf Spider

Wolf spiders are found throughout the world and more than 100 species live in North America. The spiders are brown and hairy, sometimes have stripes or markings and can be 1/4 inch to 2 inches long. The wolf spider's venom is not harmful to humans, although some people do have a reaction to their bites.

Life Cycle

Male wolf spiders have front appendages, called pedipalps, which they wave at female spiders when they are ready to mate. The female spider lays eggs, which she wraps in silk and attaches to the spinnerets on her stomach. It takes approximately one month for the eggs to hatch and after they hatch, the baby spiders crawl onto the mother's back and live there for a week. Later, the baby spiders will make silk parachutes and let the wind move them to different places. Wolf spiders shed their skin as they age and usually live 2 years.

Hunting

Wolf spiders use a passive approach to hunt their prey. They wait until the insect walks by and then quickly reach out and snatch the animal, although they will chase their prey if necessary. After catching its prey, the wolf spider injects venom into the insect, which liquidates the insect's insides and allows the wolf spider to suck out the insides. Wolf spiders will eat most insects and even each other and usually hunt during the night.

Habitat

Unlike most spiders, wolf spiders do not create webs, but dig burrows and often live under stones, decks, woodpiles and other outdoor places that provide a sheltered space. They live alone and may stay in one burrow for their whole lives. During the fall, they seek warm places to stay and that is when they most often end up in homes. Wolf spiders can be found in basements and garages as well as near windows and doors. They may also enter the home on firewood. They prefer to stay close to the floor, and in homes will live under furniture and on indoor plants.

Defensive Moves

It is unusual for a wolf spider to bite a person, or any other predator. The spiders have eight eyes and they see well. Their primary mode of defense is to run away, since they move quickly. Wolf spiders have to recreate venom after they kill an insect, so they tend to save biting only for hunting.

Professional Code Of Ethics For Teachers

Teachers must follow a code of ethics in the classroom.

The way teachers do their work is regulated by their own ethical standards and by those of the teaching profession. Whereas some professions have formulated their own universal code of ethics, such as the Hippocratic Oath of doctors, there are several published codes of ethics for teachers. Even though the best known is the code of the National Education Association, most state departments of education have developed their own codes that govern the work of teachers.

Personal Example

Guidelines listed in most ethical codes outline how teachers should conduct themselves with students. It includes instructions concerning the care and manner with which they do their work and how they treat students and others.

Classroom Climate

Teachers can establish beneficial classroom climates by creating an environment of safety and trust where students are free from fear and ridicule. It is important for teachers to conduct a spirit of cooperation and friendly competition. The classroom teacher should motivate all students to work hard and should never embarrass a student if he does not work as hard as others.

Ethical Dialogue

Teachers should establish an ethical dialogue in their classrooms by discussing with the students the core ethical values such as honesty, respect for others and responsibility. These values come to play not only in the study of classroom subjects, but in the real life events of the school.

Discrimination

It is against any code of ethics for teachers to harass or discriminate against a student due to their race, color, sex, nationality, religion or physical or mental condition. All students have the right to an education and should receive quality care from the teacher.

Obligation to the Public

Precautions should be taken to distinguish between teachers' personal views and those of the institution or organization in which the teacher is affiliated. Teachers should not knowingly misrepresent information in communicating with students, parents or other teaching professionals.

Exercises To Control Breathing

Whether it's due to stress, habit or simple inattentiveness most of us don't utilize our lungs to their fullest capacity. We sometimes breathe air into the top part of our lungs, or into the lower portion, or into the middle, but we hardly ever take in a complete breath to fill our entire lungs. With some dedication and practice, however, we can train ourselves to be healthier breathers. This will enable you to take greater advantage of the life benefits your breath has to offer, like the cleansing benefit of introducing larger amounts of oxygen into your system.

The Complete Breath

The complete breath is the proper way of breathing. It's breathing in a way which fills the lungs to capacity and then empties the lungs of all waste. In the yoga practice of Pranayama (which means "breath control), the complete breath is the foundation of all subsequent specialized breathing techniques and must be mastered first.

The Resting Stage of Breathing

As it is with all forms of exercise, a lot of good goes on in the period of rest which comes after the actual activity. Resting is what allows for improved restoration. In the case of breathing exercises, rest is achieved not by stopping the breath, but through prolonging the natural pause which follows every inhale and every exhale. There's a good reason why the expression "take a breather" is synonymous with relaxation. Deliberately extending the pause stage of your breath has the benefit of slowing everything down, relaxing the nerves and relieving fatigue. Yogis train themselves to increase the duration of their breathing pauses simply by breathing completely for a while to build up their body's supply of oxygen. Once comfortable begin to stretch out each stage of your breath, with a focus on prolonging the pause phase of your breath for only as long as it does not cause you to experience distress. Remember, the pause is a natural part of the breath cycle. The point is not to try to stop the breath by holding the pause under strain. Rather the goal is to build up your ability to effortlessly expand the rest stage of your breathing cycle.

Mind Control

Breath control and mental control go hand in hand because you are essentially training your mind in order to train your breath. Breath control requires deliberate mental focus otherwise you'll revert to breathing as you've been habituated to breathe. The mind has to be settled so that your undivided attention can be given to being mindful about your breath. Allowing your mind to get distracted introduces a constant interruption to your breathing exercise making improvements slower to come. Try creating a special space to practice your breathing control. Whatever you can do to make your space calming and conducive to your ability to sustain inner focus, implement those strategies. Another technique of settling the mind can be learned from the "moving meditation" of tai chi. It's said that the practiced simple movements of tai chi work to preoccupy the subconscious mind so that subconscious thoughts are less likely to emerge and distract the conscious mind from a higher focus.

Gentle Progress

Never try to force breath control. If the breathing exercise you're performing begins to make you feel dizzy, faint or uncomfortable -- stop. Do not resume until you can settle yourself again.

Use Colchicine For Gout Pain

Colchicine is a prescription-only medication used to treat gout by reducing inflammation in the joints. The medicine is not a cure for gout, but it can be used to treat the symptoms. Traditionally, colchicine has been available in tablet and injectable form, although the FDA has taken all injectable forms of the medication off the market due to risk of toxicity. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), patients should take the following precautions when using colchicine for gout pain.

Instructions

1. Talk to your doctor first before you start using colchicine. Never take this medication without a prescription and do not take any products containing colchicine that were not given to you by your doctor or pharmacist.

2. Do not take colchicine if you are pregnant. Several studies have shown that colchicine can be harmful when used during pregnancy.

3. Do not drink grapefruit juice while taking colchicine, unless your doctor specifically permits it. Grapefruit juice may interfere with the effectiveness of the medication.

4. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking colchicine. Alcohol may decrease the effectiveness of the medication and may contribute to stomach irritation.

5. Take only the amount directed by your doctor, with food and a large glass of water. There is no standard dose, but most patients start with one 0.5 mg tablet per day, according to the Mayo Clinic. Your doctor may increase the dose if one tablet is not effective in treating your gout pain.

6. Keep taking the medication until your doctor tells you to stop. If you are using colchicine for gout pain, you may feel improvement quickly but the pain could return if you stop taking the medication before instructed by your doctor.

7. Store your medication in a dry, cool place and do not keep it in the refrigerator or a bathroom. Make sure it is safely secured from children and pets.

8. Tell your doctor if you experience any side effects. Colchicine may cause digestive problems like diarrhea and vomiting.

Different Uses Of Crystals

Crystals have uses ranging from the scientific to the spiritual.

For centuries, crystals have been considered valuable for their technological, healing and spiritual qualities. From powering a calculator to alleviating pain, the wide variety of ways that crystals can be used is astonishing.

Solar Cells

One of the largest uses for crystals is in solar cells. Solar cells power various instruments from calculators to space vehicles. The solar cell produces energy, called photovoltaic energy, by using silicon (which is based on a tetragonal crystal).

Transistors

Made out of semi-conductors, which are based on the same types of materials and crystals as solar cells, transistors can regulate electron flow, detecting and amplifying radio signals and hence acting like digital "switches." Transistor radios, for example, make this use out of crystals.

Liquid Crystals

This precise substance made out of crystals can be used for a variety of different means, from heat and electricity to magnetism and mechanics. For example, wristwatches and some types of clocks use liquid crystals, as do some pocket calculators.

Spiritual Crystals

Different kinds of crystals have long been thought to bestow certain traits or qualities on those using them, helping them access certain emotions. Thus, amethyst crystals are thought to reduce feelings of anger and impatience. Other crystals' uses include: aquamarine to release fear; carnelian to produce confidence; coral to intensify emotions: diamonds to increase prosperity; emeralds to relieve depression and insomnia; and sapphire to restore calm and a sense of balance.

Medicinal Crystals

In addition to having supposed spiritual benefits, some new age medical practitioners claim that the presence and other uses of certain crystals promote different kinds of medical benefits. These benefits include: amethyst to treat headaches or unbalanced blood sugar; aquamarine to regulate the immune system, heart and lymph nodes; carnelian to help with energy, the reproductive system and menstrual cramps; citrine to cleanse the spleen, kidneys and liver; coral to help the metabolism, spine and tissue regeneration; emeralds to help with the thymus and childbirth; jade to help cleanse the blood and the nervous system; rubies to help with cholesterol and blood clots; and sapphire to help with inflammation, fever and nosebleeds as well as tuberculosis.

Eat More Bioflavanoids

Bioflavonoids, often referred to as vitamin P, include citrin, hesperidin and rutin and make up the vitamin C complex. Bioflavonoids are an essential part of the daily diet as they strengthen capillaries, prevent oxidation of vitamin C, are powerful antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory effects and help to regulate sleep patterns.

Instructions

1. Eat more foods rich in bioflavonoids if you begin to notice symptoms of deficiency such as blue spots on the skin, susceptibility to respiratory infections, hemorrhoids, spider veins, bleeding gums, eczema, psoriasis or arteriosclerosis.

2. Get your bioflavonoids from food sources instead of in a supplement form, as they are found in complex combinations in foods. When these combinations are separated and isolated, they do not have the same biological effects. As long as you include plenty of colorful fruits and vegetables in your diet, you should be eating enough bioflavonoids.

3. Find plenty of bioflavonoids in fresh, raw fruits, particularly citrus fruits. Additionally, rose hips, grapes, apricots, strawberries, black currants, cherries and prunes all contain high sources of bioflavonoids, and are delicious as well. Slipping a bit more fruit into your diet is easy. Try adding berries to your morning cereals or choosing fruit for that after dinner sweet instead of heavy dessert.

4. Make sure that your diet includes lots of raw vegetables as well, to ensure a wide variety of bioflavonoids. Particularly helpful veggies include green peppers, onions, garlic, cabbage and cayenne pepper. Keep a number of chopped veggies in the fridge at all time for healthy snacking.

5. Enjoy your foods raw in order to ensure that your body receives all of the bioflavonoids it needs. Bioflavonoids are extremely delicate and cooking destroys them, so dried fruits, cooked or canned fruits and vegetables, jams and jellies or bottled fruit and vegetable juices are not proper sources.

Diagnose Liver Cancer

Liver cancer results in approximately 15,000 deaths in the United States each year. Symptoms include abdominal pain and swelling, jaundice, fatigue, weight loss and blood clotting that leads to intestinal bleeding. Because these symptoms mimic those of other afflictions, cancer is often not diagnosed until the patient is in the advanced stages of the disease.

Instructions

Diagnosing Liver Cancer

1. Be aware of a history of liver conditions such as hepatitis, alcoholism, cirrhosis, or exposure to toxins that make you more susceptible to liver cancer.

2. Symptoms of liver cancer include the presence of a lump in the upper right abdomen, indicating a tumor, and bruising or swelling on the body, which may be signs of liver failure. These symptoms call for a complete physical examination

3. Undergo blood tests. The complete blood count (CBC) can help detect anemia and infections, and a blood chemistry panel (SMA) will indicate how well the liver is functioning. A hepatitis panel is also recommended.

4. Ask for radiological tests. A chest X-ray can indicate the presence of a lung tumor, which could spread to the liver. A CT scan detects liver tumors if they are bigger than one centimeter, and a magnetic resonance imaging test (MRI) can show if cancer has spread to the surrounding lymph glands.

5. The patient undergoes a biopsy if any of these tests indicates the possibility of liver cancer. A needle is injected into the organ and the doctor withdraws tissue samples, which are tested to rule out or confirm the existence of cancer.

Home Remedies For Sinus Headaches

There is only one thing you want when experiencing the throbbing pain of a sinus headache, and that is relief. Relief for your sinus headache can be found with things that you have right in your home. There are remedies that can be sipped and others that can be inhaled that can give you relief in a very short time. You can also find relief when you are away from home with a few quick home remedies for use on the road.

Food and Drink

Foods rich in vitamin C provide relief, especially when heated. When you have a headache, you want to avoid any cold foods or beverages. Lemonade and orange juice contain vitamin C and you can sip these at room temperature. A warm bowl of tomato soup, rich in vitamin C, will help too. Sipping a hot cup of tea with lemon can help in a couple of different ways: you are getting the vitamin C from the lemon, and you will help loosen the sinus congestion with the steam coming off the tea.

Remedies for the Road

If you are on the road and have no way to boil liquids for inhaling, you can stop at a grocery store and buy a jalapeno pepper. A few bites will give relief by helping drain your sinuses. This home remedy will also make your eyes tear up, so be ready for a good cry.

Another quick way to help your sinuses drain while away from home is to pop a couple of mentholated cough drops into your mouth and let the vapors slowly work on the congestion. This is not the quickest home remedy, but you will get some relief.

Deep-breathing exercises will relax you and ease the pain of the sinus headache. This home remedy helps with any type of pain but works especially well for sinus headaches. Breathe in slowly and deeply through your nose and then exhale slowly through your mouth. A few minutes of this will start to relax the tense muscles that are contributing to your headache.

Steam Remedies

When you have a sinus headache, you are experiencing pain due to the pressure caused by congestion in your head. You need to get rid of that congestion, and the departure of the headache will follow.

Inhaling steam laced with apple cider vinegar can get rid of your headache almost instantly. Mix ½ cup of apple cider vinegar with ½ cup of water and bring the mixture to a boil in a covered saucepan on the stove. When it boils, remove from the heat and let stand for a minute. Lift the cover and slowly inhale the steam through your nose. This is a potent inhalant, so take it a little at a time. Your nose will start to sting. It will then start to drain and provide you with instant relief. You can repeat this throughout the day until your congestion is completely gone. Apple cider vinegar contains a natural antibiotic, so you are also medicating any infection that may be festering in your sinus cavities. This is one of the best home remedies for a sinus headache.

If there is no apple cider vinegar in the house, an inhalant of plain steam will help with the decongestion process that is needed to get rid of your sinus headache. Peppermint oil can be added for an extra soothing effect.

Comfort Remedies

For comfort, you can lie in a dark room with your head back to help with the draining of your sinuses. This old home remedy has been practiced for years. A cool, damp washcloth laid across your forehead will help with the pain. A half- hour of sleep while using this method might be just what the doctor ordered. Many people claim that a smudge of menthol vapor rub under the nose along with lying down will also help to ease this type of headache. A paste made of water and ground cinnamon that is spread on your forehead is also a home remedy that can provide relief.

A foot bath is addressing the opposite end of your body but is a home remedy that will help in the relief of a sinus headache. Put a cool compress on the back of your neck while soaking your feet in warm water. This will help in relaxing you and in turn help in easing the pain of a sinus headache. This home remedy is great to use when this headache hits you at home; it is not one you can easily use while in a business meeting.

Replace A Window Screen On A Camper Shell

Pop-Up Camper Shell

Window screens, especially on camper shells, have a tendency of becoming ripped. There's nothing more aggravating than having insects flying into your screen while you are camping. However, following a few steps, you can easily replace the screen with little hassle.

Instructions

1. Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the staples holding the window screen on. Some of these may be set in and rusted, but a little old-fashioned prying will quickly remove them.

2. Pull the window screen away from the camper shell and set it on top of your replacement screening.

3. Trace the border of your old screen on to the new screening using a sharpie marker. Make sure to go a little wide of the actual border so you can cut within the lines.

4. Cut out the new screening following just inside the lines you traced using a pair of heavy duty scissors. Try to keep the cut as clean and smooth as possible.

5. Place the new screen over the window and staple it to secure it. Make sure to keep the screen taught the entire time to prevent wrinkles from forming.

Anticholesterol Diet

Cholesterol is an essential fat-like substance the body needs to digest food and create necessary hormones. However, LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol, also known as "bad" cholesterol, will build up in the arteries and large amounts can lead to heart disease. Any anti-cholesterol diet should focus on reducing this type of cholesterol in the bloodstream, and there are may tasty options available.

Lean Meat

Meat, especially red meat, comes loaded with saturated fat that contains LDL cholesterol, which can clog your arteries and pack on pounds. Include lean meats in your diet like chicken and fish, as these foods are lower in saturated fat. Instead of a hamburger, substitute ground turkey or ground chicken. If you must have red meat, trim the fat before cooking, or drain off the grease after cooking to decrease saturated fat.

Eggs and Vegetables

Cholesterol in eggs exists entirely in the yolk, so incorporate egg whites only into your breakfast dishes and other meals. Replace each whole egg with two egg whites to maintain portion sizes in dishes like omelets or scrambled eggs. Egg substitutes are another useful option. Egg whites offer all the protein of whole eggs with none of the cholesterol.

No discussion of an anti-cholesterol diet would be complete without mentioning vegetables. Besides containing no LDL, green vegetables are easily processed by your digestive system and help clean out toxins and other impurities that may clog your arteries. Feel free to eat broccoli, peas and leafy vegetables like lettuce and cabbage.

Low-Fat Dairy

Use low-fat milk and cheeses, and substitute a little low-fat yogurt for ice cream when you snack. Cut your portions if you must consume dairy products with fat. Also, beware of white flour because of its high carbohydrate content. Carbohydrates can contribute to high cholesterol, so switch over to whole-grain breads, oatmeal and brown rice.

Nuts

Pecans, almonds and walnuts are great sources of unsaturated fats, which actually lower cholesterol levels. Nuts also contain omega-3 oils, which lower cholesterol levels and promote heart and vascular health. When choosing nuts, go for the unsalted variety so you don't increase your risk of high blood pressure.

Gout Recommended Diet Tips

Gout is a painful form of arthritis characterized by red, swollen joints. Attacks of gout are brought on by the buildup of uric acid in the body. Normally, uric acid is dissolved within the bloodstream and passed out of the body through the kidneys. However, when uric acid crystallizes rather than dissolves, the crystals tend to congregate at the joints in large masses, forming the painful lumps we associate with gout. Most uric acid compounds in the body come from purines in the foods we eat. Diets high in purine-rich foods can increase the odds of developing gout.

Avoid

People with gout should avoid or entirely eliminate foods that are high in purines, as purine compounds form uric acid when they are broken down in the digestive process. Foods that are purine rich include anchovies, game meat, gravy, scallops, herring, mackerel, caviar, red meats, shellfish, beans, lentils and peas. Additionally, both baker's and brewer's yeast can lead to flare-ups in gout; therefore, yeast extracts such as Vegemite and alcoholic beverages that contain yeast, such as beer and wine, should be eliminated from the daily diet.

Reduce

Foods that contain a moderate amount of purine compounds can be eaten, but not on a regular basis. Consumption of midrange purines should be limited to no more than three servings total in a week. These foods include: poultry, pork, meat-based soups, whole-grain cereals, oatmeal, fish, eel, asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms and spinach. In addition to this, alcoholic beverages made from hard liquor should be limited to one drink, three times per week, at most.

Enjoy

Those who suffer from gout have no dietary restrictions placed on the consumption of low-purine foods, such as nuts, peanut butter, vegetables and fruits. Unlike most people, those with gout are actually encouraged to eat breads and cereals made from refined white flour, butter, eggs, cheese, chocolate and cream-style soups (as long as they are not meat based). There are also no current limitations placed on the consumption of coffee, tea, soda, fruit juice or sugar.

Beneficial

While those diagnosed with gout are encouraged to eat all sorts of fresh fruits, some seem to be more beneficial than others. For example, cherries seem to be particularly useful to gout sufferers. According to a recent study done by the Western Human Nutrition Research Center in Davis, California, consuming 6 to 8 cherries each day reduces the amount of uric acid in the blood, while consuming 20 to 45 cherries can alleviate the development of gout symptoms. Other foods that seem to be particularly beneficial to gout sufferers include blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, oranges, red cabbage, bell peppers, olive oil, tofu and low-fat dairy products such as skim milk, mozzarella cheese, cottage cheese and yogurt. Gout sufferers should try to incorporate as many of these foods as possible into their daily diet.

Use Back Braces For Bad Posture

Bad posture is usually a precursor to other health problems. Once the back falls out of alignment, other areas of the body start to deteriorate. Fortunately, it is a condition that can be fixed over time. Purchase a back brace and stretch and exercise to correct poor posture, and back health can be yours.

Instructions

1. Purchase a back brace. There are many websites where you can order one. It is important to know the right size brace you need before you order. Braces come in a variety of fits. Ask your doctor what brand he would recommend.

2. Make sure you have the right fit. If your brace is too large or small, not only will your posture not improve; it might worsen. All medical supply stores have trained salespeople who can properly fit you with the correct brace.

3. Eat right and lose weight. Obesity and an abundance of abdomen fat can lead to slouching and poor posture. Being overweight places a heavier burden on the spine and lower back. Maintaining a normal weight for your size is imperative to keeping good posture. As you lose weight, you may need to readjust your back brace or purchase a smaller one.

4. Stretch every day at least twice. Most "weekend warriors" hurt their backs by not stretching and warming up before activities. When they reach or lunge the wrong way, the back goes out of alignment. To compensate, people slouch and further injure their backs. Do stretches before you strap on your back brace.

5. Exercise regularly to maintain a healthy posture. The back is one muscle group where rest is not always the best way to heal. Remain active to prevent back muscles from tightening and prevent atrophy.

Plant Black Walnut Seeds

Protect walnut seeds from squirrels with fresh cown manure.

Walnut seeds are the fruit of the walnut tree--the nut. Black walnuts are one in a group of different species of walnut trees and a native of eastern North America. These are giant plants that grow to 100 feet in height and 70 feet wide, says "Sunset Western Garden Book." Black walnuts propagate from seeds or seedlings. But the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service reports that, among other advantages, seed propagation lets you handpick the exact tree you'd like to reproduce if you gather your own seeds.

Instructions

1. Prepare the planting area by removing all weeds and grass. A circle of about 4 feet in diameter is ideal for each walnut seed. Since it is possible not all seeds you plant will germinate, sow several nuts 8 inches apart. Later, thin the seedlings to retain only the number of trees you wish to grow.

2. Place the black walnut seeds, without their fleshy husks, in a container filled with water. Discard all that float to the top. If you gathered your own seeds, remove the husks by soaking the walnuts in water. The husk will soften, making it easy to peel it off.

3. Dig holes 2 to 3 inches deep and place one seed on its side in each of the holes. Cover them with soil. Plant the seeds in early fall for them to receive the necessary amount of chilling they need to germinate.

4. Irrigate the seeds thoroughly and cover the area they're in with fresh cow manure. This works as a squirrel repellent, according to the Forest Service.

5. Thin the seedlings after the first growing season to retain only the trees you want. Cut the saplings' trunk below the root collar with a sharp spade. Then, dig under the roots and remove the root ball.

Natural Bowel Cleansing Recipe

Cleanse Your Bowels Naturally

Hulda Clark is a naturopathic doctor who specializes in kidney, liver and bowel cleansing treatments and has written several books on these subjects. Her recipes and procedures are not approved by the FDA. See a doctor if you are not feeling helped by these bowel cleaning recipes or have a bowel disorder. If you are vomiting or feeling dizzy from these treatments, discontinue use immediately and see a doctor as soon as possible.

Ingredients

The ingredients required to complete Dr. Clark's bowel cleansing regimen include turmeric caplets and Lugol's Iodine, also known as Lugol's Solution, which consists of iodine, potassium iodide and distilled water. You will also need to purchase fennel capsules, any brand of digestive enzyme caplets you can find at your local drugstore or grocery store and freeze-dried black walnut caplets. If you can't find these items at your local grocery store, you can find them at online health food stores or heath food and vitamin stores worldwide.

Preparation

Before taking any of these items or eating or after using the bathroom, dip your hands in a solution of one drop Lugol's Iodine per cup of water. This will sterilize your hands. Keep the solution at your bathroom and kitchen sinks and remember to dip your hands in it after washing them. Set aside in the refrigerator a solution of Lugol's Iodine that is six drops per 1/2 cup of water that you will drink throughout the day. You can eat as you normally would while taking this regimen, but don't eat anything that would ordinarily upset your bowels, such as large amounts of dairy if you are lactose intolerant.

How Often to Take It

Four to six times a day, drink 1/2 cup of the Lugol's Iodine solution in the refrigerator. Take two capsules of turmeric and two capsules of fennel three times a day, four capsules of the digestive enzyme all together at lunch, and two black walnut capsules before bed. Continue this regimen for about two weeks, and determine if you are feeling any better. If you are feeling better, continue the regimen for one more week. If you are not feeling better, discontinue the regimen and see a doctor to further address your bowel problems.

Titanium Bracelet For Pain Relief

Titanium Bracelet

Titanium bracelets are becoming widely used in the treatment of pain from conditions such as arthritis, degenerative disk disease and chronic pain syndrome. The practice of using metal to treat conditions dates back to ancient times in Greece and the Middle Ages. Today, people ranging from golfers to office workers have used the titanium bracelets for pain relief.

The Science

People who suffer from chronic pain or even the occasional migraine often do not want to take medication for their pain. The titanium bracelet provides an alternative method of pain management. The basis behind the magnetic therapy is that the magnetic field pulls toxins and impurities out of the skin along with improving cell oxygenation and blood flow resulting in better pain control. Another way the bracelet may help is by pressure points on the body, such as the wrist, in a way similar to acupuncture.

Use

The titanium bracelet is lightweight, designed for men and women, and found in almost every jewelry store. The magnet in the bracelet also comes in a variety of strengths to help with pain. A unit of measurement called gauss identifies the strength of the bracelet and measures the magnetic field per centimeter on a surface. Titanium magnetic bracelets can range from 6,000 gauss to 60,000 gauss depending on the quality. The magnetic discs are located inside the bracelet and the bracelet must touch the inside of the wrist when worn.

Benefits

Magnets may provide benefits such as better circulation, resulting in less swelling and pressure on joints and organs. Some of the conditions that the titanium bracelet may help are migraines, back pain, hand and wrist pain from fractures or muscle strain, fibromyalgia and sleeplessness. Some professional golfers wear the bracelet to improve elbow and forearm pain caused by repetitive motion from swinging the golf club.

Considerations

Though alternative healing proponents believe in the effectiveness of the titanium bracelet, not everyone is convinced the bracelet actually works. The FDA has not approved the use of titanium bracelets or any other magnet for the use of controlling pain symptoms.

Warnings

Individuals who should not use titanium magnetic bracelets are those who have metal implants such as pacemakers or diabetic devices and women who are pregnant, since the magnets could possibly harm the fetus.

It is also important to note that although some people experience a relief in pain symptoms from wearing the bracelet, it should not be a substitute for medical treatment from a physician.

Use Tourmaline Stones

No two tourmaline stones are identical.

Tourmaline is a hard mineral that grows inside rocks found around the world in places such as Sri Lanka, Africa and Brazil. Tourmaline naturally forms in several different colors such as black, green, red, blue and pink and it is often partially transparent. Tourmaline has been used as far back as ancient Egyptian times, when it was called "gemstone of the rainbow" due to the wide variety of available colors. Tourmaline is believed to have mental, spiritual and physical healing qualities. Purchase tourmaline online or through local gem dealers as well as jewelers.

Instructions

1. Wear black tourmaline jewelry around your neck, wrists or ankles or directly on any areas of the body experiencing an ailment to correct the energy of your cells.

2. Use brown tourmaline, also known as champagne and dravite, to calm and soothe yourself. It is also believed that brown tourmaline provides psychic protection.

3. Meditate while holding blue tourmaline to induce psychic awareness and emotional purification. Blue tourmaline is associated with higher self-awareness and intuition.

4. Stimulate the unity of your heart and body by keeping rubellite -- dark pink or red tourmaline -- with you. The dark pink tourmaline is high in lithium, which brings feelings of love and balance into your life.

5. Balance your metabolism and increase your immune system by wearing "watermelon" tourmaline that has pink, red and green color qualities.

6. Carry green tourmaline or wear it as jewelry to attract creativity, compassion and abundance in your life. For healers, this gem is thought to be particularly helpful when used in conjunction with healing herbs.

7. Increase your intelligence with yellow tourmaline, known as golden or tsilaisite. The bright yellow color is a product of the traces of manganese found in it.

Get Rid Of Chronic Back Pain

You can overcome the debilitating effects of back pain.

Short-term or acute back pain resulting from an injury or muscle spasm generally heals within a couple of days or weeks. But when you are dealing with chronic back pain, discomfort can persist for several months or years. Even if you suffer from a condition such as arthritis or fibromyalgia, in which back pain becomes the norm, there are many ways to get rid of chronic back pain and enjoy a relatively active and pain-free life.

Instructions

1. Manage inflammation with medication. Inflammation plays a role in chronic back pain, so get rid of back pain by managing and relieving inflammation. Take over-the-counter medications intended to reduce inflammation, such as ibuprofen and aspirin.

2. Consider stronger medications. Chronic pain may not respond to over-the-counter medications. Seek advice from a doctor such as a neurologist or rheumatologist. Experiment with prescription-strength anti-inflammatory medications like prednisone, or consider a cortisone injection for long-term relief.

3. Apply ice regularly. Keep an ice pack in the freezer and apply it to your back muscles as needed to dull inflammation and reduce pain. To avoid nerve damage, apply for no more than 30 minutes. Remove for 30 minutes, then reapply as needed.

4. Invest in a hot tub. Install a small hot tub in your backyard or use the jacuzzi at your local gym to relax achy, tense muscles and alleviate inflammation in the back. Using a heating pad on sore muscles also eases pain.

5. Reduce stress. Wearing high-heel shoes, carrying large bags and standing for long periods can aggravate and bring on chronic back pain. Recognize habits that lead to discomfort and modify these behaviors. Wear flatter heals and alternate between sitting and standing.

6. Strengthen weak muscles. Being inactive can weaken back muscles and bring on pain. Start slow and build up your strength with moderate exercise such as walking, light weightlifting and stretches.

What Is Universal Health Coverage

Universal health coverage exists when health care coverage is extended to all persons within a state or nation. Typically, universal coverage is funded through a single-payer system in which all health care costs are paid through a single funding mechanism, usually administered by the government. The United States is the only leading industrialized nation that lacks universal health coverage.

Identification

Most insured Americans have medical and dental insurance through their employers.

Types

Some U.S. government programs, such as Medicare, Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program, provide coverage to the elderly, the poor and children. However, large numbers of people remain without coverage.

Size

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 14 percent of Americans lack health coverage. Adults ages 18 to 24 were the least likely to have health insurance.

Proposals

Some members of Congress have proposed implementing universal health coverage in the United States by expanding Medicare to cover all Americans. The Obama administration has made universal health coverage a policy priority.

Benefits

Under universal health coverage, all citizens, regardless of their ability to pay, have health care coverage. This reduces costly hospital emergency room visits by the uninsured.

History

A 1994 attempt by the Clinton administration to implement universal health coverage was defeated after heavy lobbying by the insurance industry and business groups.

What Is Lipozene

Society is fixated on youth and slimness, and along with these obsessions come many products and promises that pledge results. Today's sedentary lifestyle, fast-food diet and instant gratification has given birth to an obesity epidemic. The good news is that people are always trying to slim down, lose weight, look better and get healthy. The bad news is that there are a lot of unproven and dangerous gimmicks, drugs and advice lurking all around.

What is Lipozene?

Lipozene is a natural diet pill. Obesity Research Institute, LLC, holds the registered trademark. Lipozene claims to offer astounding results in weight loss through the diet pill's active ingredient, glucomannan. Glucomannan is a water-soluble nutritional fiber. It comes from the roots of the Konjac plant grown in Asia and harvested in Japan. Glucomannan expands in dimension in the stomach, giving the feeling of fullness. Lipozene acts as a dietary fiber sponge that makes a person feel full and thus eat less.

Claims

Lipozene claims on its website to be a natural weight-loss diet supplement. It also maintains that it reduces body fat, that it is backed by multiple clinical studies and that pounds of body fat and weight are lost without any change in lifestyle. Lipozene assures customers that it is safe and effective, and it offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Dosage

It is instructed that it is safe to take up to two Lipozene capsules three times a day before each meal. Six capsules is the maximum dosage recommended. Capsules should be taken 30 minutes before each meal with 8 oz. of water. Lipozene is manufactured in the United States, and has a shelf life of 2 years. Lipozene claims to be 100 percent natural, but it is recommended that you consult a health care professional if you are taking prescription medication. Pregnant and lactating women are advised not to take Lipozene.

Side Effects

Known side effects of Lipozene are chiefly related to digestion. Common side effects are gas, bloating, fullness, nausea, stomach pain and diarrhea. More serious side effects include difficulty swallowing, severe or chronic diarrhea, changes in blood sugar, allergic reactions such as hives, itching, swelling in the mouth or throat, wheezing or difficulty breathing.

Does It Work?

Lipozene is mainly a fiber pill. There is no clinical data backing the claim that it does in fact reduce body fat and weight. Studies do signify that Lipozene's active ingredient, glucomannan, may interfere with the absorption of some vitamins and minerals. Its manufacturer, Obesity Research Institute LLC, has a history of making false and unproven claims, and has been forced to pay over $1 million to the Federal Trade Commission to rectify customer complaints.
