Treat A Tooth With An Old Crown That Is Infected

Treating an infected tooth with an old dental crown helps ease some of the pain and discomfort associated with a toothache. If the tooth under the crown is infected, chances are the infection is putting pressure on the root and nerve endings. A dentist or orthodontic surgeon can get at the source of the infection and drain it away, possibly saving the tooth. Until you can get to a dentist, try these steps for treating an infected tooth with an old crown.

Instructions

1. Ask your doctor or dentist to call in a prescription for antibiotics to your pharmacy. If you have a family doctor or dentist, these medical professionals may be willing to prescribe an antibiotic to treat the infected tooth until you can be seen in the office. A prescription for antibiotics is usually the first course of treatment before any corrective work can be done on the tooth. Antibiotics will also help you feel better within as little as 24 hours.

2. Gargle with warm saltwater. A solution of 2 cups warm water and 4 tbsp. salt attacks the infections and washes some of it away if the infection is draining. This eases some of the pain and makes your mouth feel cleaner.

3. Gargle at least twice a day with an antibacterial mouthwash. This kills bacteria, reduces the spread of infection and helps prevent new infections with regular use.

4. Rub clove oil along the gumline of the infected tooth to ease pain, or place one or two whole cloves between the gum and cheek.

5. See a dentist as soon as possible for professional treatment. Unchecked tooth infections can spread, leading to fever, tissue decay and serious complications.

Safety Of Artificial Athletic Field Turf

Artificial turf is a man-made playing surface intended to replicate or replace natural grass. Essentially it is "plastic grass" embedded in recycled rubber tires. It replaced the old "Astroturf" which was basically "carpet over concrete." These new turfs and their technology make it possible for athletes to cut, plant and release just like they would on natural grass.

Artificial field turf replaces natural grass.

History

Artificial field turf has been around for more than 15 years. Two Canadians invented the product. In 2009, 22 NFL team practice on the surface and 10 use it in games. Many colleges in the United States utilize the turf. The bulk of the market for synthetic turf consists of high school fields and municipal parks and recreation fields.

Safety

There is an ongoing debate regarding the safety of field turf versus natural grass. A study by the American Journal of Sports Medicine compared the two surfaces. The study researched high school football athletes in Texas over a five-year period. They were monitored in areas such as frequency of injury, type of injury, location of injury, injury time loss and head and knee trauma.

Findings

The study found there was evidence of more injuries for the athletes who played on artificial turf than on natural grass, but the incidences were minimal. It also found there was more loss of playing time per player on natural grass when it came to sustaining head injuries and ligament injuries.

Conclusions

The study remains inconclusive because "both surfaces also exhibited unique injury patterns that warrant further investigation."

Misconceptions of Field Turf

There has also been concern over the rubber from the field turf literally getting under a player's skin. "The rubber can get in your system as much as dirt does," says Darren Gill, marketing director for FieldTurf Tarkett, one of the largest distributors of the product. "We had one reported case where a player got it in his eye and it had to be washed out."

Considerations

Field turf is cheaper to maintain than real grass because it doesn't need to be regularly watered or cut. It also does not have to be shut down in the winter like grass fields. It stands up to the abuses of multiple games over a weekend and can be used anytime.

Natural Treatments For Flea Bites

Natural Treatments for Flea Bites

Fleas are reddish brown and small with hard, flat bodies. They are tough and nimble insects that can jump up to 8 inches to land on a host. Fleas are parasites straight out of a nightmare, sucking your blood and almost too small to see. Just the thought of finding one on you or your pet is chilling, but if you do find yourself bitten, there are things you can do to help with the symptoms.

Where You Might Find a Flea

Adult fleas can live only on the flesh of a mammal. That means you'll most often find them on your pets, but they can live on humans, too. While eggs are most often laid on the host animal, they can also be laid on carpet, bedding, clothes and even in cracks on hard surfaces.

What a Flea Bite Looks Like

The appearance of a flea bit depends on the sensitivity of the person bitten. They can be nothing more than a raised red bump that lasts only a few minutes or they can blossom into an itchy rash that lasts for days. Children tend to be more sensitive to a flea bite than adults. The most telling evidence is that you will find only one puncture wound, unlike a spider bite, which will have two. On your pets, you may not be able to see the bite, but incessant itching, hair loss and flea dirt (tiny black droppings) will help you identify the problem.

Diseases Carried by Fleas

Fleas are known to carry a type of tapeworm called Dipylidum canimum that can infect people or animals who unknowingly ingest one of the insects. Fleas can also carry murine typhus, a mild form of typhus that causes headaches, fever, loss of appetite and rash.

Natural Remedies for Flea Bites on Pets

According to earthclinic.com, an herbal shampoo made of cedar, bergamot, rosemary, lavender, eucalyptus, citronella and juniper or geranium will soothe your dog's itchy skin and kill fleas. All-pets-info.com says a spray of 600 ml water, two drops of lavender essential oil and two drops of pure cedar essential oil will help soothe skin and keep fleas from returning. For cats, a spray of equal parts water and white vinegar will kill fleas and help with bites.

Natural Remedies for People

Thorough cleansing with an astringent like witch hazel will kill bacteria. Tea tree oil is another helpful antibacterial that both soothes and cleanses the skin. Once the bite is clean, an ice pack placed directly on the bite will help reduce swelling and itchiness. Instead of an over-the-counter antibiotic like Neosporin, try dabbing honey on the bite to keep it clean and keep it from itching.

Medication For Epilepsy In Dogs

Epilepsy in dogs is a severe and life-threatening condition that must be controlled through veterinarian-prescribed medications. Once a dog is experiencing severe seizures, medications must be quickly administered to stop the seizures. After the seizures are controlled, veterinarians will decide what type of medication to prescribe for daily use in order to control epileptic seizures in dogs.

Medications to Halt Current Epileptic Seizures

Medications that may be administered to stop current seizures from occurring include benzodiazepines (diazepam or clonazepam) and the anti-convulsant medication phenobarbital.

The benzodizapines are administered as a first line sedation to allow the placement of an IV catheter in a dog currently experiencing seizures. Phenobarbital is administered to reduce and stop the seizures.

These medications must be administered through intravenous (IV) routes as dogs cannot be given any oral medications while they are seizing. Phenobarbital is administered on an hourly basis until the seizures are controlled. Once the seizures are controlled, oral medications are prescribed to control future epileptic seizures.

Medication to Prevent or Reduce Epileptic Seizures

Oral phenobarbital is usually the type of medication prescribed to control epilepsy in dogs. The medication is available in a pill form, and the dose is usually every 12 hours (twice a day). Side effects of phenobarbital use in dogs include lethargy, extreme thirst, frequent urination and an increase in appetite. Phenobarbital side effects generally last for 2 weeks, until the dog develops a tolerance to the medication.

Phenobarbital Alternative

Oral bromide, also known as potassium or sodium salt, is used in uncommon instances when dogs cannot tolerate phenobarbital medication. This oral medication must be given twice a day with food, and it can cause side effects such as nausea, gastrointestinal irritation, lethargy, inflammation of the pancreas, increased thirst, increased appetite and increased urination.

Combination Medications

If phenobarbital does not effectively control seizures in epileptic dogs, additional medications may be prescribed. Diazepam (administered rectally), clonazepam, chlorazepate dipotassium, valproic acid, mephenytoin and levetiracetam may all be combined with phenobarbital to help control seizures in dogs. Most of these medications must be given two to three times a day along with phenobarbital doses.

Considerations

Epilepsy in dogs can sometimes be difficult to control, and pet owners can help their veterinarians to find the right medication (or combination medication) by keeping track of their dog's behavior and any side effects that occurred while they were on medication. Pet owners should also take diligent notes of the time any seizures occurred, how long they lasted, their severity and what time medications were administered.

Due to the side effects that are caused by many combination medications, pet owners will need to ensure their epileptic dog receives frequent veterinarian exams along with regular blood tests to monitor organ function and blood health.

Do A Shamanic Journey

Journey work is the healing medicine of shamanism.During a shamanic journey you "work" on the spiritual and energetic realms to solve problems, get guidance and heal energetic imbalances. You will enter a conscious dream state, where you will "travel" to a sacred place and communicate with your higher self, as well as your spirit guides and helpers.Great personal healing can take place during your travels. Follow the steps below to go on a shamanic journey.

Instructions

Go on a Shamanic Journey

1. Play your shamanic drumming or rattling music. It can also be a combination of both.

2. Lie down on the floor on your back, and make yourself as comfortable as possible. You can lie on a bed, too. Use a pillow. It's possible your body temperature might drop slightly during the journey. This is OK, just make sure you have a blanket to cover yourself with.Close your eyes and tune into the music. Allow the sound to carry you inward. Relax. If you are having trouble relaxing, take some deep breaths.

3. Begin to visualize a sacred place in your mind's eye. This could be a beach or forest you've visited before, a fantasy garden, or anywhere you feel safe. It does not have to be somewhere you have physically been before. Tap into your fantasy realm and be creative!

4. Ask silently to go to your sacred place. Then, just wait. Notice what feelings, sensations and thoughts you experience. Keep your eyes closed and your focus inward. As you journey, you might see your sacred place in your mind's eye, or just feel that you are there. If you are in darkness, keep holding your intention to be at your sacred place. If you are having difficulty getting to your sacred place, ask for help. Maybe a door will appear, or you'll find yourself greeted by an animal or spirit guide who will take you there.

5. Once in your sacred place, ask if there are any spirit guides or helpers present. See who shows up! There might be animals who come into your inner vision. You might also sense that your higher self or over soul is present and available to you.Ask questions so that your helpers and higher self can help solve problems. Ask for guidance. You could be surprised at what answers you receive!

6. Take note of any symbols, colors or numbers might show up. Also, pay attention to what your spirit guides are saying to you. Continue on your journey.

7. Near the end of the music track, the drumming will become rapid. This is your signal to begin completing your journey. Be sure to thank and say goodbye to your spirit guides and helpers. Your garden or sacred place might slowly dissolve, or you might feel like you are flying away from it. As your consciousness returns to the physical realm, be gentle with yourself. Don't get up right away. Stay reclined.

8. Write down in your journal what you saw, heard, sensed, etc. Writing the experience will help you integrate it, as well as uncover any answers that you may be seeking.Welcome back!

Why Do Healing Stones Lighten Or Darken

Some healing stones change color.

Crystals have been used for thousands of years as symbols of wealth and supposed healing agents. Their unique atomic lattice structures make it possible that some crystals might change colors under certain conditions.

Types

Sapphire changes color in different light.

Alexandrite, diaspore, sapphire, garnet and spinel are known to change color when acted upon by light of particular length, color and intensity.

Function

Healing stones are believed to conduct energy.

Crystal healers believe that certain stones conduct energy from a healer to another body. When energy is amplified or conducted through the stone, the stone might change color.

Features

Human energy is believed to bring color change.

Certain crystals are energy conductors that can register a wide range of vibrations, including electricity, magnetism and sound. Various frequencies might incite color changes.

Potential

Opals and other fragile stones change color easily.

Opals are considered powerful healing stones believed to spark the imagination and absorb thoughts and emotions. Like other fragile stones, opals can change color with exposure to heat, salt or intense energy.

Prevention/Solution

Crystals can be cleansed with salt.

It is said that crystals are subject to physical and energetic damage and imbalances and can get "tired" from too much use. Crystal healers believe that tired crystals can be enlivened and cleansed with salt, sound and even moonlight.

Advantages Of Assisted Living For Seniors

Assisted living facilities are for people that need assistance with daily activities but wish to live independently without moving into a nursing home, which is more for people that need around-the-clock care. Assisted living facilities provide individual service plans for each person so that everyone receives the assistance they need to live on their own with some help.

Independence

Seniors that live in assisted living facilities have their own independence to come and go as they please. It is the same as living in their own home, but there are assistants to help with the needs that seniors may have. Seniors can leave to shop, eat out, visit friends and family, travel or go out for a walk.

Socializing

Assisted living facilities have commons areas where everyone can get together and play cards, other games or just relax and talk. These types of facilities have dining areas for meals if the seniors prefer to eat with friends. Family members can come to the assisted facility and use the commons areas with family members that live there as well.

Housekeeping

Many seniors cannot tend to the daily cleaning of keeping a home. In an assisted living facility, there are assistants that come to the apartment of the senior and perform cleaning duties that are no longer an easy chore for those that are aging. The duties might include vacuuming, hand dusting, doing dishes and the laundry.

Daily Personal Activities

Some seniors need help with daily activities such as bathing, grooming and dressing. Sometimes a person is disabled or weak and cannot perform these activities without help. Instead of having someone come to the home outside of the facility, an assistant will come to the apartment at the facility and help with brushing teeth, combing hair or give help to those that need help getting in and out of the bath. Assistants can help prepare meals if the person prefers to dine in their apartment instead of the common dining room.

Health Care

Some seniors experience memory lost or need daily medical treatments. Assisted living facilities have on-duty nurses that can dispense medication and help with many medical treatments recommended by the doctor. The senior still has independence, but they will have the medical care that they need without having to have someone come to the home from another organization.

Relieve Stress Through Biofeedback

Relieve Stress Through Biofeedback

Biofeedback is an alternative method of treatment in which patients use signals from their bodies to retrain various bodily functions or activities. Biofeedback can be used to treat such stress-related ailments as headaches, insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure and chronic pain. Costs for treatment of stress-induced illness is moderate, as long as the patient is committed to learning the treatments to continue at home. If treatments can only be accomplished in the therapist's office, the bill could become quite expensive, even though the fee for each office visit is quite reasonable. Follow these steps to learn more.

Instructions

Relieve Stress Through Biofeedback

1. Know your cause of stress as well as the effects stress has on you and any other problems you would like to address.

2. Find a qualified therapist. You can check with the Biofeedback Certification Institute to find Biofeedback therapists near you (see Resources below). Ask a qualified health professional for recommendations.

3. Check your therapist's qualifications. Be sure that the therapist has experience treating other patients with problems similar to yours.

4. Discuss your problems, the cause and your expectations for relief with your therapist.

5. Inquire about stress management training. In order for you to make an informed decision, your therapist should be able to tell you what the duration of each session will be, the minimum number of sessions needed and the cost of the training.

6. Begin your sessions. In each session, the patient is connected to several machines that monitor muscle tension, skin temperature, activity of sweat glands and brain waves.

7. Expect to continue training at home. This training should help you use your newfound skills in controlling involuntary responses to target and relieve stress through Biofeedback.

Alternatively Treat Anaphylactic Shock

Alternatively Treat Anaphylactic Shock

While there are no alternative health methods to treat anaphylactic shock once it occurs, you can take steps to strengthen your immune system through natural means. Anaphylactic shock is a life-threatening medical condition where a severe allergic reaction causes the respiratory and pulmonary systems of the body to shut down. A strong immune system, however, may reduce the severity of the shock.

Instructions

1. Treat anaphylactic shock alternatively through methods that strengthen your immune system. This can be achieved through vitamin supplements containing quercetin (400 to 500 mg. per day), vitamin C (2 to 6g per day) and zinc (30mg per day). These amounts should be spread out evenly through the day, rather than taken at once.

2. Try herbal supplements to treat anaphylactic shock alternatively by further strengthening the immune system. Many herbs, such as alpinia galanga, ashwagandha, Chinese skullcap, licorice and stinging nettle, have antihistamine qualities that can reduce the likelihood of anaphylactic shock occurring. Note that licorice should not be taken by individuals with high blood pressure.

3. Investigate additional herbal remedies that contain many of the natural antioxidants, such as quercetin, vitamin C and zinc. These include the blossoms from such plants as hardy orange, sweet chestnut tree, spreading sneezewood and Asian rose. Many of these herbs have been shown to inhibit anaphylaxis in animals, and may also be helpful to humans.

4. Avoid herbs that contain allergens that may trigger anaphylactic shock. These herbs include cinnamon, cayenne pepper, dandelion root, echinacea, ginkgo biloba, psyllium seed, St. John's wort, yarrow and feverfew.

5. Visit a homeopath if you have experienced anaphylactic shock in the past, or if you have discovered that you have an allergy that may cause anaphylaxis in the future. A homeopath can create a remedy to help alleviate some of the symptoms that occur with anaphylactic shock, such as anxiety, swelling and hives. Herbs such as aconitum, arnica montana and apis mellifica can be used alternatively to treat the after-effects of anaphylactic shock.

6. Use acupuncture to help relieve symptoms of allergies, and to strengthen your immune system. Acupuncture may be also effective in speeding recovery from anaphylactic shock and restoring the body's equilibrium.

The Average Cost Of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers have been used for more than 25 years for cosmetic dental restoration. When teeth have yellowed or become fragmented, porcelain veneers can improve your smile greatly while at the same time provide durability. In addition to their aesthetic value, dental veneers also can be used to protect the surface of a damaged tooth. Although porcelain veneers can vary considerably in price they are not inexpensive.

How Veneers Work

Porcelain veneers are thin pieces of hard translucent ceramic material that are glued to the front of your teeth.

Overall Cost

The cost of a single porcelain veneer tooth can range between 900 and 2,500 dollars depending on several factors. A person who plans to get a full set of veneers can expect to pay somewhere between 10,000 and 30,000 dollars.

Material Expenses

The cost of porcelain veneers can fluctuate depending on the specific type of materials and veneers that are used. Two of the different types of veneers currently on the market are Lumineers® and da Vinci Veneers™.

Customized Fitting

Part of the expense of porcelain veneers is the preparatory cost. The veneers must be customized to fit your teeth in a dental laboratory. The veneers are shaped and colored to look and feel like your natural teeth. This process usually takes about a week, at which time the porcelain veneers will be glued to your existing teeth.

Dentist's Fee

The cost of the dentist's time can vary depending on where her office is located and the degree of training and experience the dentist has.

Longevity

While they probably won't last a lifetime, you can plan on keeping your porcelain veneers for 10 to 15 years before they will need to be replaced. Several factors can affect the longevity of veneers including the patient's bite and the improper use of one's teeth.

Easy Maintenance

Since porcelain veneers are very resistant to staining, you can maintain a whiter smile throughout the lifetime of the veneer. When staining does occur it can simply be polished off during a routine cleaning.

Water Pill Alternative

Water pills are diuretics that cause the kidneys to get rid of excess sodium. When this happens, the body is also flushed of excess water. Water pills are used to treat heart failure, liver and kidney disease, and hypertension as they reduce blood pressure. They also help relieve bloating, especially for premenstrual women. There are some natural alternatives to water pills that you can find in your garden or at the local grocery store.

Tea

Teas have a diuretic effect on the body. Consuming 2 to 4 cups of tea can take the place of a water pill by causing you to urinate more often. Choose all-natural unsweetened tea for overall health benefits, adding honey if desired. Good choices for herbal teas to drink to reduce fluid retention are green, lemon, ginger, mint, spearmint and wintergreen.

Salads

There are several herbs that can act as a diuretic and can enhance a salad. Try tossing some parsley, dandelion leaves, mint, chicory or fennel into your salad. Drink lots of water with your salad. It seems counterintuitive that drinking water will aid in water retention. Still, when you drink water, it flushes out the body systems, including excess water.

Supplement Your Diet

Pink grapefruit and lemon are citrus fruits that relieve bloating. These fruits cause the cells to let go of excess water. Plus, they are extremely low in sodium. Try incorporating these fruits into your diet.

Supplement your diet with calcium. Do this by drinking low-fat milk or snacking on cottage cheese. You can also take a calcium pill. Calcium not only reduces water retention but has numerous other health benefits, such as strengthening bones and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

Stay Away From Salt

Yes, we all need salt to survive. Too much can be extremely detrimental to the body. One of the major causes of fluid retention and the need for water pills is excess sodium. Avoid overly processed foods, which often contain salt; read labels to make sure you are not consuming too much, and use only a sprinkle in your cooking. Sea salt has less sodium than table salt, however, keep in mind it is not iodized.

Make Water Crystals

Making water crystals is fascinating and fun.

Crystals can be found in nature in a wide variety of shapes and colors. Different substances create different types of crystalline structures. You can recreate this process by creating a water crystal experiment that develops both sugar and salt crystals from water. In the end of the experiment, you will be left with two differently shaped crystals. Everything needed to successfully produce water crystals can be found at any grocery store.

Instructions

1. Heat 2 cups of water in a saucepan until it boils.

2. Pour 1 cup of the boiling water into a glass mason jar, and the other cup of boiling water into a second mason jar.

3. Pour 1 cup of salt into one of the jars, and 1 cup of sugar into the other jar. Stir both of the solutions thoroughly.

4. Place a bamboo skewer into each of the jars.

5. Place the jars in a location where they will not be disturbed for at least one week.

6. Check the jars after one week to see the differences in how the crystalline structures are developing.

Cure Hip Pain

Cure Hip Pain

Hip pain is a common problem that especially affects older adults. The cause of the hip pain can be arthritis, a fracture, a strain, tendonitis or some other source. There are various ways that you can cure hip pain, but you should speak to your doctor before you self-medicate.

Instructions

1. Rest the site of the pain. Not applying pressure to the area can help ease the pain. Many people find using a cane or walker will provide relief.

2. Use ice and heat therapies. Ice packs and heating pads are used to cure hip pain. Ice is best to use after the pain begins while heat can be helpful in preventing the pain from starting.

3. Work the muscles around the hip. Stretching can help loosen the area around the hip and alleviate the pain.

4. Get a cortisone shot. Your doctor may recommend that you get a cortisone injection to help reduce inflammation caused by tendonitis or arthritis. When the inflammation in the hip area is reduced, the pain will subside.

5. Lose weight. Some hip pain, including pain caused by osteoarthritis, can be cured by the patient losing a substantial amount of weight.

6. Visit an acupuncturist. Acupuncture therapy has been proven to cure hip pain for many long time sufferers.

Tape A Lateral Ankle Sprain

While a sprained ankle usually heals quickly and is not a disabling injury, too many sprains due to athletics or other physical activities can weaken the overall strength of the ankle over time. Wrapping a sprain will decrease discomfort associated with a sprain and also add support to prevent this gradual weakening. Taping an ankle before strenuous activity can also be used to prevent sprains and injury.

Instructions

1. Pre-wrap the ankle with underwrap in a figure eight, "overwrapping" pattern. Use the underwrap to pad out the ankle.

2. Use 38-mm sports tape to wrap three anchor points just under the calf muscle. These anchors will help hold further tape wraps in place.

3. Apply three stirrup wraps to the ankle. Starting from the inside--or medial--of the leg, wrap under the heel and attach the tape to the outside--or lateral--of the leg.

4. Apply a half heel-lock wrap to the ankle. Begin on the lateral side of the lower leg and move to the medial side of the ankle and to the front of the heel. Wrap the tape under the foot and over the lateral side of the heel at a 45 degree angle. Pass over the medial side of the ankle and attach to the lower lateral side of the leg, where the wrap started.

5. Use 5-cm elastic adhesive bandage to overwrap the entire taped portion of the lower leg, ankle and foot. Wrap in a figure eight pattern to provide further compression and secure the tape.

Stop Hiccups With Breathing Technique

Hiccups are caused by spasms of the diaphragm, the muscle that controls your breathing. In this way, they are not unlike a facial tic or muscle twitch. The trick is relaxing and 'resetting' the diaphragm, which can be accomplished easily through any of three breathing methods.

Instructions

1. Try "counted breathing." Inhale for a count of five, breathing as deep into the belly as possible. Exhale for a five-count. Repeat five times. Inhale and exhale for a six-count, seven-count, eight-count, seven-count and six-count. Inhale and exhale for a five-count five more times. Return to your normal breathing.

2. Try "hot breathing." Inhale quickly and deeply until your lungs are at capacity. Exhale for a slow count of eight to 10, pushing hard from the belly. Constrict the throat to make a whooshing noise as the breath comes out. Repeat this cycle five times.

3. Try "interrupted breathing." Inhale deeply into your belly and lungs. Exhale one second. Pause one second. Repeat until you're finished exhaling. Take three normal breaths. Repeat cycle if necessary.

Use Tea Tree Oil For Yeast Infections

Use Tea Tree Oil for Yeast Infections

Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans. This and other bacteria are always present in the body in small amounts; however, factors such as a lowered immune system, hormonal changes, sex, diabetes, and antibiotics can trigger overgrowth, according to Candida Yeast Infection Reviews. Hot, humid weather and tight clothing will also contribute to yeast infections. Try combating such infections with the antifungal essential oil tea tree. Tea tree oil is also antiseptic, anti-infectious and anti-inflammatory, which adds to its healing powers. Try the following home remedy for yeast infection relief.

Instructions

Tea Tree Oil Tampon Remedy

1. Find a tampon that is unscented, as scented tampons can sometimes cause allergic reactions.

2. Moisten the tampon with 10 to 15 drops of tea tree essential oil.

3. Insert the tampon into your vagina, and leave it in for 40 minutes to an hour. Repeat these steps daily until your infection goes away, which will take a week or less.

Tea Tree Oil Douche

4. Measure 1 tsp. of tea tree oil and 1 tsp. of rubbing alcohol in a small bowl, and mix until the solution is milky white, instructs HomeRemediesWeb.com.

5. Pour the solution into a dropper bottle, and add 10 drops of the solution to 1 pt. of water.

Talk To A Schizophrenic

Schizophrenia is a complicated and difficult disorder to cope with, both for those who suffer from it and for those who support them. One of the most difficult aspects, especially for those caring for a schizophrenic, is communication. Talking to a schizophrenic, and being understood, require patience and understanding.

Instructions

Talk to a Schizophrenic

1. Assess the state of the disorder. Some types of schizophrenia can leave a person with a blank affect; he won't speak or even acknowledge your presence. Other types cause delusions or childlike behavior. Assessing the symptoms and their severity is the first and key step to communication.

2. When attempting to communicate, use a normal voice and speak to the person with schizophrenia as you would speak to anyone else. When symptoms are minor, schizophrenics are able to understand normal communication, even if they don't always respond to it.

3. Be patient. It can take a long time to engage a schizophrenic in communication. This may be due to a symptom of the disorder or simply because the person has to focus her mind on listening and thinking clearly before even attempting to make herself understood.

Talk Impotence With A Male Partner

Impotence can strike a man at any time and often has psychological roots. As a girlfriend or wife, it is important to be able to talk about the problem openly and honestly and work through it together.

Instructions

Address the issue

1. Talk it out. If problems with impotence have been revealed in the bedroom, then it is no longer a secret. Women should not feel that they are to blame. And men should not feel ashamed. Days or weeks after the incident, talk about it in a safe environment, outside of the bedroom. Impotence can have a deep impact on any relationship, and it is very important to address it before it tears the relationship apart.

2. Research causes and solutions. Using the Internet or health journals, find out what is the likely cause. It could be physical or emotional. Experts say communication is often at the base of impotence because partners are not discussing what is bothering them. Start by talking then move to action.

3. Fix it at home. Try lifestyle changes, suggest health officials. According to health writers at the NY Times, these changes could help: Stop smoking, drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs; rest and take time to relax; exercise; make healthy food choices to improve circulation; have safe sex to reduce the fear of HIV and STDs; and talk about it and, if needed, seek counseling.

4. Consult your doctor. Your doctor can help by prescribing medication and also talking to both partners about the roots of the problem.

Cure Headaches With Cigars

The healing properties of acupuncture have spread far from their roots in the ancient Orient. Practiced throughout the world as an alternative form of medicine, acupuncture is the art of inserting needles into certain pressure points of the body to relieve pain from nearly any ailment, from constipation to extreme migraines. Hand in hand with this treatment goes the practice of using a moxa cigar to treat headaches and migraines. The theory states that pain is caused by the blockage of chi, or positive energy, throughout the body. The heat from the moxa cigar can be used as a self-treatment, and can help the circulation of chi through your body to relieve pain.

Instructions

1. Acquire a moxa cigar from a health specialty store, an acupuncturist or the Internet.

2. Light one end of the moxa cigar with a match or lighter. The cigar will not flame or smoke, but will grow hot.

3. Hold the moxa cigar above the skin, no more than two inches. The skin will begin to warm and possibly turn red; when the skin is red move onto another area.

4. Apply the cigar to the temples and the crown of the head. Other areas of the head, such as the top of the jaw or the back of the neck, can be treated depending on the type of headache.

5. Extinguish the cigar by dipping the end lightly in clean water. The cigar will not go out on its own, so be sure that it is completely out before setting it down.

Take Nystatin

Nystatin is an anti-fungal drug used to treat infections of the intestines and stomach. The drug works by weakening the fungus' cell membrane, causing the contents to leak and ultimately killing the cell. Nystatin is available only through a doctor's prescription.

Instructions

1. Take Nystatin with a full glass of water.

2. Take Nystatin at the same time every day. Your doctor prescribes a cycle of pills. Taking the correct dose at the same time every day keeps a balanced level of the drug in the body.

3. If you forget a pill, take it as soon as you remember, But DON'T double the dosage if you accidentally skip a day. Instead, take the next dose and continue the cycle.

4. Take the full cycle of Nystatin. Stopping in the middle of an anti-fungal cycle can lead to resistance and possible future infections. Always take the full dose until the prescription runs out.

5. Store Nystatin in a dry, safe place. Keep the drug out of the reach of children.

Thalidomide Cancer Treatment

When it comes to cancer treatments, there have been many medical advancements in the last decade. Here is a brief history and review of a drug called Thalidomide and how it's being used successfully to treat painful skin and bone cancers and conditions.

A Brief History of Thalidomide

Thalidomide was originally developed in the 1950's by American chemists to ease morning sickness in pregnant women. It was also found to be beneficial in treating various forms of leprosy, or painful viral lesions of the skin. However, within a few years of its release on the market, serious concerns about Thalidomide were raised as babies were being born missing limbs and other severe birth defects. Thalidomide was found to weaken fetal cells and cause an increase in the possibility of defects, so the use of it for this purpose was ended.

Thalidomide as a Treatment for Cancer and Other Medical Conditions

Despite the initial controversy, Thalidomide re-emerged in 1998 approved by the FDA to treat painful forms of cancer called multiple myeloma--more commonly known as blood and bone marrow cancer (lymphoma and leukemia). Then in 2006, the FDA approved Thalidomide, to be used in tandem with dexamethasone a well-known cancer drug, to treat newly diagnosed cancers of this type. This is because Thalidomide appears to slow the growth of myeloma cancer cells and prevent them from attaching to bone marrow cells or forming new blood vessels to steal lifesaving blood from the healthy cells. This also reduces the chances of this form of cancer of invading the bone marrow and destroying the body's ability to produce fresh blood cells.

Medical science continues to study and find new uses for this drug. For example, Thalidomide has also shown promise in the treatment of tumor necrosis which is the painful inflammation caused when tumor growth begins as a result of other inflammatory conditions like lupus, arthritis or Crohn's disease. It is also sometimes used to reduce and treat mouth and skin sores in HIV patients.

Precautions With Thalidomide

When a patient is prescribed a round of Thalidomide, there are many side effects and precautions that should be considered with this drug. The first precaution, naturally, is to avoid its use in pregnant or in women who could become pregnant. Some common side effects of patients using Thalidomide include blood clots, drowsiness, dizziness or seizures, skin rashes and peripheral neuropathy (tunnel vision). Just as with any cancer treatment medication, the use and dosage of Thalidomide should be carefully supervised by a qualified oncologist and medical team.

Take Blood Pressure Readings

blood pressure readings

Learn take blood pressure readings; it could save your life.

Blood pressure is the pressure against the wall of the artery as the blood is pumped throughout the body. Blood pressure readings change throughout the day. It's the lowest when you sleep and rises when you get up, are excited, nervous, or active. Blood pressure pretty much stays the same when you are sitting still or standing for a while.

Blood pressure readings are given in two numbers, systolic and diastolic. Both numbers are important and written one above the other number. Blood pressure is recorded as a fraction. The top number is the systolic number and the bottom number is the diastolic number.

The systolic is the larger number and written on top and the diastolic number is the smaller number written on the bottom for example, the normal blood pressure reading for an adult is 120/80. When you tell someone their blood pressure you would say 120 over 80.

Hypertension is when you have high blood pressure. The readings would indicate 140/90 or more. High blood pressure is very serious as you could have a stroke, heart attack or kidney problems.

Hypotension is low blood pressure. When you begin to go too far below 120/80, which is normal, it is considered hypotension.

Blood pressure readings indicate that the higher (systolic) number means that the pressure of the heart contracts to pump blood to the body. The lower (diastolic) number means that the pressure of the heart rests between beats. When you take someone's blood pressure the first sound you hear is the systolic reading and when the sound stops, that is when the diastolic reading is determined.

When you take someone's blood pressure, he or she should be sitting quietly and relaxed. Sleeve pushed up or the shirt removed to be able to put the blood pressure cuff on properly.

Instructions

1. Explain the procedure to the patient. Tell the patient that the blood pressure readings will take a few minutes and they will feel the cuff tighten and then deflate.

2. Gather the equipment and make sure they are in working order.

3. Position the arm. Place their arm on a table or desk to take the blood pressure.

4. Place cuff above the elbow. Make sure the cuff is one inch above the elbow and fit the arm tightly and snugly. You should be able to put one finger under the cuff for tightness.

5. Place the stethoscope earpieces into your ears. Place the stethoscope ear disk at the crease of the elbow.

6. Inflate the cuff. Rapidly inflate the cuff by squeezing the balloon. If you inflate slowly you will get a false reading.

7. Loosen the valve slowly. Let some air out first and then listen for the first beat. Then look over at the pointer of the dial. This is the first reading, which is your systolic number.

8. Continue to deflate the cuff slowly. When you hear the heart beat stop, look over at the dial. The pointer will indicate the lower reading, diastolic number.

9. Record both readings in a fraction. A normal reading is 120/80.

10. Release the cuff. Then pull down the sleeve and you are done.

11. Blood pressure readings can be affected for a variety of reasons. You could have cardiovascular disorders, neurological conditions, kidney and urological disorders, obese, and various medications can affect your blood pressure.

While you're here be sure to take a look around at more tips and information about blood pressure readings.

Calculate Exercise With Weight Watcher Points

Calculate exercise with Weight Watchers points.

When using Weight Watchers as a method of weight loss, you have the option of earning activity points to boost your weight loss efforts. Activity points also allow you to add food points to your daily menu, giving you a chance to add more filling foods to your diet to avoid hunger. Using the POINTSbooster that came with your new member packet, you can calculate how many points to add to your diet, depending on how much exercise you do.

Instructions

1. Determine whether you have worked out at a low, moderate, or high intensity. With a low intensity workout, you will experience no sweating. If you are sweating after 10 minutes, you can consider your workout as moderate intensity, and a high intensity workout will leave you sweating after 3 to 5 minutes.

2. Line up the number of minutes that you engaged in exercise with the line for either "low," "moderate" or "high" in the left-hand column of the POINTSbooster slide.

3. Find your body weight in the right-hand column of the slide. Without moving the slide, find the number of points that your exercise has earned. The heavier your body weight, the more points you earn for exercise. As your weight goes down, be sure to make a note of whether your exercise points are also going down.

4. Add that number of points to your total extra points available for the week. You may choose to eat foods containing your extra points on the same day that you earned them, or on another day during the week, but exercise points do not transfer over to the following week.

Prevent Infertility

Prevent Infertility

While the majority of infertility cases are caused by genetics, there may be things you can do to prevent infertility. The environment you live in has a huge effect on your potential fertility, including the substances you consume, the air you breathe and even the way you handle life's stresses. Knowing what compromises your fertility and devising with ways to avoid potential hazards is the best way you can help prevent infertility.

Instructions

Prevent Infertility

1. Examine your lifestyle. Certain habits, such as smoking or drinking alcohol, could have a detrimental effect on your fertility. Even high levels of stress and lack of consistent sleep may increase infertility.

2. Ask your employer or your HR department about the environmental hazards in your workplace. By law, you are allowed to know when you are being exposed to chemicals which are known to cause infertility, birth defects and other health problems.

3. Maintain a healthy weight through diet and consistent exercise. Avoiding excessive weight gain is one of the best ways you may be able to prevent infertility. Obesity is known to cause infertility in males by lowering sperm count through overheating and in females through suppression of ovulation.

4. Get yearly check-ups. Early diagnosis of conditions like pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometriosis and cervical cancer may prevent infertility. In addition, detection and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases may also help safeguard your fertility.

5. Learn about your body and your reproductive cycle. The more in-tune you are with what is normal for you, the more likely it is you'll know something might be wrong. Books like "Taking Charge of Your Fertility, tenth Anniversary Edition: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health" by Toni Weschler might give you an in-depth look at the exact process of creating life.

Remedies For Thinning & Shedding Hair

When your hair is thinning or shedding it could be a result of the food you eat, your general health, and especially the condition of your scalp. Luckily, there are a number of remedies that can help treat this condition and prevent further hair loss.

Oil Massages

If you are losing hair, make it a habit to massage your scalp heartily for about 15 minutes every day after a water rinse to make hair follicles stronger by enhancing blood circulation. Use castor oil, hot coconut oil or a boiled mixture of amla (Indian gooseberry) and coconut oil.

Leaving coconut milk or the gel of the aloe vera plant in your hair for about half an hour after a massage and a warm water wash is another effective remedy.

Other Massages

Other therapies include a honey and egg yolk massage and an almond oil massage three times daily to help prevent loss of hair, as well as an apple cider vinegar and sage tea application, or rubbing a bald area with onions and then honey.

You can also use a mixture of half a cup of yogurt, powdered fenugreek and a half cup of cooked black lentils for a scalp massage, which should be left on for a couple of hours before washing off. Employ the same procedure using amla and a raw egg.

Regular Therapy

Apply a mixture of water, ground lime seeds and peppercorns (or oil in which raw mango pulp has been soaked) to your scalp. Another recipe calls for applying a mixture of a teaspoon of cinnamon powder, hot olive oil and honey to your hair 15 minutes before you wash it.

Applying Indian herbs such as triphala, shikakai and reetha, as well as the juice of coriander, are also beneficial in prevention of hair loss and slowing or reversing thinning hair. Also, you can use a natural hair cleaner made of a tablespoon of vinegar in half a liter of water to alter the chemical balance of your scalp and make your hair look more voluminous.

Fluids

Fluids are known to directly affect hair growth and loss. Bananas, yogurt and milk made in to a smoothie, a teaspoon of cider vinegar in one glass of water, and a mixture of alfalfa, spinach and coriander juice, can be ingested regularly to stimulate fast hair growth. You can also treat a copper deficiency, which is one of the main causes of thinning hair, by making a drink of lettuce, carrot, alfalfa and capsicum.

General Measures

Keep your hair clean, as blocked scalp pores make hair roots weak, leading to thinning. Never wash your hair with water that is too warm and never more than twice a week. Shampoos should be mild, preferably protein-rich varieties that fortify your hair follicles, add body to each strand and make the hair look fuller.

Pick Nutrisystem Foods

NutriSystem is a weight loss company that offers pre-packaged meals to customers in order to make healthy meal planning easier. NutriSystem has two ways to get the quantity of foods needed to stay on the program. One way is to allow NutriSystem to pick the foods. The other is to choose the self-selection option, in which customers get menus to choose from.

Instructions

1. Go to the NutriSystem website and sign up for the program. When given the choice between letting the company choose the meals and choosing them yourself, mark the self-choice option. This will take you to a menu of pre-packaged breakfast meals.

2. Pick your breakfasts. You must pick 28 breakfast selections. You can choose more than one of any dish as long as the total number adds up to 28. If you have not eaten NutriSystem breakfasts before, it's a good idea to order many different dishes to see which ones you like. Getting too many of one and then finding out that you don't like it may cause you to go off the diet.

3. Choose 28 lunches, keeping the same thing in mind. If you prefer your biggest meals at lunch time, choose substantial lunch meals. If you prefer light lunches, choose something lighter such as a meal-replacement bar.

4. Look through the dinner selections and choose 28 of them. Once those are chosen, continue to the dessert menu. The NutriSystem diet allows you to pick 28 desserts. These can be rich chocolate desserts, cookies, popcorn or dessert bars. If sweet desserts may get you into the mood to cheat on your diet, choose items like chips that aren't sweet. Pick the desserts and then continue to the checkout and pay for the items.

5. If you want to stay on the diet the next month, opt for the automatic plan that will keep shipping the selections to you every month. Otherwise, choose the option for a limited, 28-day membership.

Holistic Cures For Bedwetting

Bedwetting is a common problem among young children, so don't overreact if your child starts to display this condition. The most important thing to remember is to keep the situation as low-key and stress-free as possible, while implementing various natural treatments.

Evaluate the Problem

The first step in addressing your child's bedwetting is figuring out the reason for it. It is normal for children to wet the bed up to 3 years of age, so if your child is young it may just be a matter of time before she stops. If your child is older, you should visit a doctor before you begin any treatment approach. Medical conditions or medication may be leading to the bedwetting problem.

Use Positive Reinforcement

Bedwetting is an embarrassing condition for a child. Making a child feel ashamed will only make it more difficult for him to stop. Make sure other family members aren't mocking him or announcing he wet the bed. Make the situation as least stressful as possible, as stress will only add to the problem. Strive for a situation where he feels comfortable enough to approach you and talk about this condition.

Practice praise and build up your child's confidence. Drawing attention to the nights your child wakes up dry will give him confidence in knowing he can go to sleep without wetting the bed. Pointing out the times during the day that your child goes to the bathroom on his own also can help instill confidence.

Set Early Bedtimes

Your child may be so tired when she goes to sleep that she just can't wake up when she needs to go to the bathroom. Try having her go to bed earlier, but don't make known the fact that it's because of bedwetting. Also, keep the door to the bathroom open and a light turned on, to make the bathroom more accessible when your child wakes up in the middle of the night.

Monitor Fluid Intake

While it's important that your child drinks plenty of fluids and stays hydrated throughout the day, she should stop drinking about an hour or two before bedtime. Do not reduce fluid intake throughout the day, just during the hour or two before your child goes to sleep.

Schedule Nightly Bathroom Visits

Many children who wet the bed do it at about the same time each night. Once you figure out your child's pattern, you can help her set a bathroom schedule. In addition to a routine of your child going to the bathroom right before she goes to sleep, wake her later in the night and bring her to the bathroom, checking to see if she's already wet the bed. If she hasn't yet gone, try to keep her awake in the bathroom until she urinates. Once she's done, she can go back to bed. Doing this every night will eventually get her used this new bathroom schedule.

Teach Bladder Control Exercises

Ask your child to tell you when he's going to the bathroom during the day. If you are with him, tell him to hold it for a short time, as part of an exercise that will help him stay dry at night. Start by asking him hold it for 30 seconds. Do this daily and slightly increase the time you ask him to wait.

Consider Helpful Products

There are several alarms on the market that are created specifically to help with bedwetting. In addition to wearable alarms, there also is a type that attaches to bed sheets and goes off if it senses moisture. Your child may then wake up and finish urinating in the bathroom. Results have been seen in two weeks with this method.

Chiropractors Vs Doctors

While traditionally family doctors or general practitioners were the primary choice for receiving medical care and treatment, many people are now visiting chiropractors for a variety of medical conditions. While traditional doctors and chiropractors are both licensed and trained medical professionals, there are many differences between the two.

Function

Chiropractors treat conditions affecting and caused by the musculoskeletal system. Traditional physicians treat medical conditions in all parts of the body.

Abilities

Unlike doctors, chiropractors are not licensed to prescribe medications or perform major surgery. Instead, chiropractors treat conditions using manipulations of the spine, light therapy, ultrasound and heat.

Education

Doctors must receive bachelor's degrees in a field like biology or chemistry prior to attending four-years of medical school, resulting in eight years of post-secondary education. Chiropractors may enter professional training after two years of undergraduate school followed by four years of post secondary education, meaning that in some cases chiropractors receive only six years of schooling.

Training

After graduating from medical school, doctors work as a resident for three to eight years to gain experience in the field before practicing medicine independently. There is no specific required residency for chiropractors after graduation.

Considerations

In some cases, doctors and chiropractors work cooperatively, meaning that you do not have to choose between the care of one or the other.

Store And Clean Invisalign Braces

Invisalign orthodontic braces must be removed when you eat, or when you drink beverages other than water. Here's cheaply store and clean your Invisalign braces without purchasing the Invisalign cleaning system and without using any special cleaner.

Instructions

1. When you remove your aligners, immediately place them in a cup of water. Or, if you don't want guests or co-workers staring at a cup full of orthodontic devices, place them in a small, closed container full of water. I have found that storing the Invisalign braces in water basically eliminates discoloration or "clouding" that occurs otherwise. Store your braces in the water until you need to place them back into your mouth. This prevents your saliva from drying on the aligners.

2. Rinse the braces in water before putting them into your mouth, and change out the water in the container.

3. Whenever you have time, but at least once per day, place a small amount of toothpaste on a toothbrush and brush the inside and outside of the aligners, just as you would brush your own teeth. Rinse the aligners thoroughly in water afterward. Using toothpaste that is more of a traditional "paste" rather than a "gel" makes it easier to rinse off the toothpaste from the braces.

4. Brush your teeth prior to putting the aligners into your mouth. Keeping your teeth clean is part of eliminating discoloration just as you need to keep the braces clean.

Lymphocytic Colitis Diets

An uncommon type of inflammatory bowel disease, lymphocytic colitis causes intermittent chronic episodes of diarrhea and abdominal cramping. A very similar type, called collagenous colitis, is so similar that the two disorders are considered one category for treatment purposes. Some diet changes may help relieve the condition.

Main Recommendation

The main diet recommendation for lymphocytic colitis is eliminating any foods or beverages containing caffeine, such as coffee and chocolate, and lactose, such as dairy products. These substances stimulate fluid secretion in the colon, or large intestine.

Exception

One exception to the anti-dairy recommendation is yogurt, because some patients experience good results after adding a probiotic supplement to their diet. Probiotics are healthy bacteria that can help restore the proper balance of bacteria in the large intestine, and yogurt is a probiotic source.

Potential

Some people find relief with a low-fat diet. Others have good results by eliminating alcohol and spicy foods. Researchers have not found any positive results for this type of colitis when people eliminate gluten from their diet, even though gluten sensitivity is linked to some inflammatory bowel disease.

Identification

People with lymphocytic colitis should keep a food diary and take note of any foods that cause a flare-up. Common problem foods are raw fruits and vegetables, beans, and carbonated beverages, because these tend to cause gas.

Considerations

People with lymphocytic colitis should avoid anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen, because these are linked with colitis symptoms. Acetaminophen is allowed, however. Baylor Medical Center has found that taking high doses of Pepto-Bismol in chewable tablet form is effective in some patients.

Stop Bedbug Itching

Bedbugs can strike the cleanest houses and fanciest hotels.

Bedbug bites appear as red welts on the skin up to 14 days after contact, according to the Office of Environmental, Health and Safety Management at Indiana University. Bedbugs, scientifically known as Cimex lectularius, draw blood much like a mosquito. Saliva from the bug enters the site of the bite, causing itching and irritation. Bedbug infestations frustrate homeowners and prove difficult to eradicate, but the bugs do not transmit disease.

Instructions

1. Wash the bite site with antiseptic soap to remove germs. This, along with avoiding scratching, reduces the risk of infection.

2. Apply an ice pack to the area as needed to reduce swelling and temporarily relieve itching.

3. Use a topical cream with hydrocortisone. Apply the cream as often as needed, according to the directions.

4. Take an oral antihistamine to reduce your body's allergic reaction to the bedbug saliva. Use the product as directed until itchiness and irritation subside.

Ast Testing For Liver Problems

Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) is an enzyme found mainly in the liver and heart. The liver uses AST and other enzymes to make proteins and metabolize amino acids. Increased AST indicates liver damage or disease, as well as damage to the heart muscle. Cellular damage to either organ causes the AST to be released into the bloodstream.

Reference Values

Normal AST values for men and women differ slightly. For men, the normal range is 8-46 U/L. The normal range for women is 7-34 U/L. The definition of normal lab values may vary slightly from one lab to another.

Indications For AST Testing

AST may be ordered to monitor possible adverse effects of certain medications known to affect the liver in high doses, such as acetaminaphen. Other indications for testing include symptoms of possible liver conditions, such as jaundice, dark urine, light-colored bowel movements and vomiting blood. Exposure to hepatitis or excessive alcohol intake would also be indication for testing AST.

Liver Conditions Affecting AST

AST levels are elevated in mononucleosis, liver tumors, cirrhosis, hepatitis and traumatic injury to the liver. Shock, in which circulatory collapse delivers less blood and oxygen to the liver, also affects AST. One of the main causes of elevated AST values is fatty liver. Fatty liver results from prolonged alcohol abuse, obesity and diabetes.

Warning

According to Dr. Siamak Nabili, medical author on medicinenet.com, higher levels do not necessarily indicate the extent of liver damage. For example, a patient with acute hepatitis A may have very high AST levels, up into the thousands. Most patients with hepatitis A fully recover with no permanent damage to the liver.

In contrast, a patient with chronic hepatitis C usually has only a slight elevation in AST. These patients may develop chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis.

Considerations

Elevated AST alone is not an absolute indicator of liver damage. Before a diagnosis is made, a complete history and physical should be obtained, along with other blood work. Additional studies such as x-ray or CT (cat scan) may be ordered to confirm diagnosis.

Other Drugs Affecting AST

Many medications affect liver function and should be used with caution in patients with known liver dysfunction. A few of the more popular medications affecting the liver include aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, statin drugs to lower cholesterol, certain cardiac drugs and tricyclic antidepressants.

Aural Acupuncture In The Treatment Of Drug Dependence

Acupuncture is an alternative form of treating ailments by the use of various pressure points. Auricular acupuncture focuses on the pressure points in the ear to treat various diseases like drug dependency. This form of detoxification has been known to help alleviate mental and physical withdrawal symptoms among substance abusers.

History

In 1955, French doctor, Paul Nogier, discovered traditional acupuncture points had parallel points in the human ear. In 1970, a Chinese neurosurgeon, H.L. Wen, accidentally discovered the benefits of acupuncture in treating patience with drug dependencies.

National Acupuncture Detoxification Association

The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) was founded in 1985 as a non-profit organization that provides training and education regarding acupuncture as a treatment for addiction and mental diseases.

Technique

Thin, sterilized needles are applied to five designated ear points for 25 to 60 minutes.

Physical Relief

Physical symptoms such as headaches, muscle aches, cravings and nausea are reduced significantly. Additionally, blood circulation and functions of the liver, kidneys, lung and the nervous system are rebalanced.

Mental and Emotional Benefits

By rebalancing the vital energy in the body, also known as the Qi, mental and emotional withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, depression and anxiety are alleviated.

Misconception

Auricular acupuncture should be used as a complementary treatment and not as the sole treatment for drug dependency.

How Many Arteries Are In A Human Heart

A typical human heart is a bit larger than your fist and weighs anywhere from a half-pound to a full pound. The arteries of the human heart, in conjunction with the capillaries of the heart, are vital in the daily pumping of approximately 2,000 gallons of blood.

The Arteries of the Human Heart

There are two main coronary arteries--the right coronary artery and the left coronary artery. The right coronary artery splits off into two more arteries, known as the right marginal artery and the posterior descending artery. The left coronary artery splits into two additional arteries as well--the circumflex artery and the left anterior descending artery. This makes six total arteries in the human heart.

Structure of a Heart Artery

The arteries of the heart are tri-layered. The Franklin Institute describes the outer layer of a heart artery as being composed of tough tissue, the second layer as being composed of muscle and the third or inner layer being composed of epithelial cells. The strength of the muscular layer in the middle helps the pumping of blood, while the smoother inner layer promotes easy, unobstructed blood flow.

How Each Artery Serves the Heart

Each artery supplies blood flow to different sides of the heart. The right and left coronary arteries supply blood to the right and left sides of the heart, respectively. The right side of the heart send blood to the lungs, while the left side of the heart sends blood to out to the rest of the body.

Bipolar Symptoms In Kids

Until recently, bipolar disorder was rarely diagnosed in children. However, increased understanding of bipolar disorder is leading to earlier diagnosis and intervention. In adults, cycling between extreme high and low moods is the primary symptom of bipolar disorder. In children, the symptoms may be different.

Irritability and Anger

In addition to a pervasive irritable mood, kids with bipolar disorder may have frequent temper tantrums and destructive outbursts.

Risky Behavior

Delusions about their own abilities can lead kids with bipolar disorder to engage in risky behavior, such as jumping from heights.

Erratic Activity

Bipolar kids may have trouble concentrating. They may start many projects at once, and talk quickly and constantly.

Sleep and Eating Disturbances

Frequent and overpowering cravings---especially for sweets---may be part of bipolar disorder in kids, in addition to trouble sleeping, nightmares or sleeping too much.

Rapid Mood Cycling

Manic or depressive episodes in adults with bipolar can last for days, weeks or months, but kids can cycle much more rapidly, with moods shifting from manic to depressive states within the same day.

Other Mental Disorders

Bipolar disorder in children may share symptoms with other mental disorders. Only a qualified mental health professional should make a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

Use Crystals To Balance Personal Energy And Increase Wellbeing

Crystals help amplify and balance energy.

Crystals help to amplify, direct and balance the flow of life force in your body and environment according to Brenda Rosen, author of "Crystal Basics." Millions of years ago, hot gasses and mineral solutions rose to the surface of the earth from its molten core according to Mary Lambert, author of "Crystal Energy." As the gasses and mineral solutions cooled, atoms merged into specific patterns that formed three-dimensional lattices and formed the crystals we know today. This structure, according to Lambert, lets the crystals absorb, strengthen and transmit electromagnetic energy that can heal and energize a person.

Instructions

1. Stand before a collection of crystals. Close your eyes. Open your eyes again, note which crystal draws your attention, and pick it up.

Hold the crystal in your hands and wait for a sensation such as warmth, tingling, a surge of energy, a vibration, humming or perhaps light coming from the stone. Try another stone if nothing happens or if the energy does not feel right for you.

2. Hold the crystal under running water for a few minutes. Think about the water removing any negativity and returning the crystal to its neutral energy state according to Mary Lambert, author of "Crystal Energy."

3. Hold the crystal in your hand, visualize it surrounded by white light and say, "I am going to use this crystal for the best and highest intentions," according to Mary Lambert author of "Crystal Energy."

Think about your intention for that crystal, take it into your hands and sense its energy. Then say, "I intend this crystal to..." and add whatever your intention is for the crystal. Repeat the intention two or three times according to Lambert.

4. Wear a necklace of red jasper to increase energy and combat exhaustion according to Dr. Flora Peschek-Bohmer and Gisela Schreiber, authors of "Healing Crystals and Gemstones."

Hold the stone under running lukewarm water to cleanse it and recharge its energy overnight in a bowl of tumbled hematite stones.

5. Deflect negativity from colleagues with smoky quartz, according to Mary Lambert, author of "Crystal Energy."

Hold a smoky quartz crystal for a few minutes and ask it to form a protective barrier around you. Place the crystal on the desk and turn its protective point toward the people with negative attitudes.

Male Breast Cancer

Male breast cancer is very rare, and it generally occurs among men who are between 60 to 70 years of age. Some reasons that could cause male breast cancer include family history of breast cancer, radiation exposure and having higher levels of estrogen than is average for men. Many people believe that breast cancer can only happen to women, but that is not true since men also have tissue that can deal with cancerous changes.

Symptoms

The most common sign of male breast cancer is a thickening or a lump occurring in the breast. Other very common symptoms of male breast cancer are nipple indentations, skin puckering or dimpling, new retractions on the breast, redness or scaling in the nipple area or skin around the breast, and nipple discharge.

Causes

Some common causes and risk factors for male breast cancer are radiation exposure, having high levels of estrogen (also called hyperestrogenism), Klinefelter's Syndrome (men who have inherited an extra X chromosome; this occurs in approximately 1 per 1000 men), liver cirrhosis (scarring), and genetics.

Types

There are several different types of male breast cancer. The most common male breast cancer is infiltrating ductal carcinoma (also common in women dealing with breast cancer). This is a cancer that begins in the breast ducts. Infiltrating means that the cancer has spread beyond the breast ducts into the tissue surrounding them. Other male breast cancer types are lobular cancer (milk gland cancer that is rare in men since most men don't have lobules in their breast tissue), ductal carcinoma in situ (cancer in the breast ducts that have not spread), cystosarcoma phylloides (connective tissue cancer surrounding the ducts), and breast Paget's Disease (nipple skin cancer).

Diagnosis

Men usually don't get routine mammograms as male breast cancer is an extremely rare condition. However, men who have a very strong history of breast cancer should consult their doctor about possible breast screenings. Men can undergo a mammogram, clinical breast exam, ultrasonography (breast ultrasound), nipple charge examination, fine needle aspiration biopsy, core needle biopsy, traditional biopsy, surgical biopsy, progesterone and estrogen receptor test, and HER2 testing. All of these testing methods could determine whether or not a lump in a man's breast is cancerous.

Treatment

As with female breast cancer, male breast cancer treatment depends on the patient's overall health as well as the severity of the cancer. The treatments are the same for male breast cancer as they are for female breast cancer. Men are generally initially treated by surgery (modified radical masectomy) to remove the breast or lining over the chest muscles. Other treatments are chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapy.
