Torn muscles can be easily mistaken as sore, especially if the tear is mild. Knowing what's wrong is essential to healing your injury--and preventing the next.
Definition
A torn muscle is the same thing as a "strained" or "pulled" muscle. A tear occurs when muscle fibers rip under one of two conditions: under the force of contraction (caused by the stress you place on it) or by repeated and exhaustive stretching (usually the result of over-working the muscle). These tears usually occur near where the muscle attaches to the tendon. The more fibers torn, the worse the overall muscle tear.
Symptoms
Luckily for you, muscle tears are easy to identify. The tears occur abruptly, often feeling like a tightening of the muscles accompanied by pain. In order to tell the difference between a tear and a simple sore muscle, do a self-check: Rather than feeling soreness and pain throughout a number of different muscles, muscle tears are isolated, occurring in a specific part of a muscle. If you have a muscle tear, you should be able to pinpoint the location with a little poking and prodding. And remember, torn muscles are felt instantly. You don't wake up with one.
Misconceptions
While checking for the symptoms, you'll also want to make sure you haven't mistaken a muscle tear for a different kind of isolated muscle injury. Be careful and cautious when you resume exercising. A re-injury of the torn muscle could become a chronic problem.
Prevention

The three major elements that make up an X-ray machine are the vacuum tube, the high-voltage power source and the operating console. The X-ray tube is essential to the machine and getting the correct results as it is the piece that ultimately produces X-rays. The high-voltage power supply uses a transformer to accurately alternate between the voltage of currents being sent to the emitter or to the anode. The emitter requires a small voltage supply to produce small currents, while the anode needs a large voltage supply to keep the speed of the electrons up. The energy of radiation that is produced is dependent on the high speed of the electrons. The operating console is the control unit, which works to manage the currents, voltage and timer. The current control has a display that allows adjustment of the tube current to vary radiation intensity. The voltage control also has a display, allowing adjustments in the anode to change the energy of radiation. The timer control determines the duration of the exposure; once the time stops, no more radiation is being produced.
Process
The X-ray tube contains either a filament or cathode emitter that expels accelerated electrons and leads them to a metal anode, where current is now flowing. The electrons that have been emitted toward the anode make up an electron beam. The beam hits a focal point in the anode, where a small percentage is converted into X-ray photons. The photons are discharged in all directions, and once the control unit is put to use, the adjusted currents and voltage result in a beam of X-rays that is projected onto a visible substance. X-rays use electromagnetic waves that can break through several layers due to the energy held inside of them. Uses

When someone suffers a herniated disk in the neck, it means that the cartilage that lies between the vertebrae of the cervical spine has ruptured or torn, allowing the soft, inner layer of the cartilage to push out through the outer layer. Since there are eight pairs of nerves within this region of the spine that makes up the neck, a person can experience more than just neck pain from this condition, prompting a myriad of symptoms that most people wouldn't necessarily expect.
Neck Pain
The majority of people who suffer from a herniated disk in the neck will experience some level of neck pain. With a total of seven vertebrae making up the cervical spine, this pain can be mild to severe, depending on the seriousness and location of the rupture as well as the way in which the body reacts to the herniation of the disk.
Neighboring Pain
With the number of nerves located in the neck, a person with a herniated disk can suffer from a neighboring pain. This pain may start out in the neck and emanate out into the shoulders and back as well as down into the arms, hands and even fingers. It may also be isolated to just the shoulders, between the shoulder blades or within one or both arms. It really depends on the nerves that are "pinched" by the herniation. And much like the neck pain itself, neighboring pain can run from a dull throb to a sharp, shooting ache.
Numbness
Since the potential of a nerve being "pinched" is much greater with a herniated disk, it is also possible for some people to experience some numbness. This particular symptom may or may not be accompanied by pain, but will feel as if there is a lack of sensation within the neck, arms, shoulder or back or as if the affected area has fallen asleep.
Tingling
For some people, a herniated disk within the neck can cause a symptom that is best described as a tingling or prickly sensation within the region of the body connected to the pinched nerve. Normally, the tingling or prickling will run down the arm and sometimes into the fingertips. But, it is completely possible to experience this same sensation within the neck itself, across the shoulders or down into the back.
Weakness
Depending on the severity of herniation and intensity of pressure, a person may also experience a certain amount of weakness from a herniated disk in the neck. When this particular symptom is present, weakness can be felt in the arms and hands, manifesting as a difficulty moving these extremities or even holding and carrying objects. If a compression has occurred from the herniation, a person's ability to walk may become somewhat impaired.

Chest compressions mimic what the heart does and help to move oxygenated blood through the body. You're trapping the heart between the sternum and the spine and pushing on it to squeeze the blood out of it. One of the biggest mistakes you can make when doing CPR is not pushing deep enough into the chest.
Instructions
1. Compress the chest 1/3 to 1/2 the depth of the chest in children and infants. Do not worry about bruising the heart or cracking the sternum or a rib. They will heal afterward.
2. Press about 1 1/2 to 2 inches down for adults or anyone who over the age of 8. For infants and younger children, press about a 1/3 to 1/2 the depth of the chest.
3. Make certain you fully release the chest so the heart can recoil.
4. When working on adults, place your hands on top of each other, keep your arms straight and lock (do not bend) your elbows so you can compress the chest fully while conserving your energy. Remember, you may be doing CPR compressions for some time before help arrives and you do not want to quit due to exhaustion too early.
5. Use your fingers to do chest compressions when doing CPR on an infant. You do not need to lock your elbows or keep your arms straight.
Transform ordinary olive oil into an amazing aromatic oil by infusing it with herbs. Instructions
Cold Oil Infusion
1. Place dried lavender in a glass jar. Any trace of water in the lavender can make the olive oil go bad.
2. Add olive oil to the jar, pouring it over the lavender.
3. Place the jar on a window sill or another sunny spot. Let it sit in the sunlight for about a month. The sun will release the flavor and aroma of the lavender into the oil. Shake the bottle daily to mix the lavender and olive oil together.
4. Strain the oil. Pour the infused olive oil through cheesecloth, then pour the oil into an airtight bottle.
Hot Infusion
5. Place herbs and olive oil in a saucepan so that there is one cup of oil for every half cup of herbs. Heat the oil over medium heat. Stir constantly and heat until the oil reaches 140 degrees, the oil begins to bubbly a little or the spices begin to sizzle.
6. Cook the olive oil for five minutes.
7. Remove the pan from the stove. Carefully pour the olive oil and lavender into a glass bowl, where it can cool.
8. Add the remaining olive oil to the infused olive oil. Strain the oil through a cheesecloth and bottle in an airtight container.

6. Think about a physician-prescribed sleep aid. Often these medications impact the brain, slowing down the nervous system and inducing sleep. Instructions
Lavender-Sage Body Spray
1. The spray bottle you use can be attractive or simply functional.
Pour 8 oz. of witch hazel into one of the spray bottles.
2. Add 20 drops of sage essential oil to the witch hazel.
3. Fill the dropper with soap water, followed by water to clean it out.
Mix a few drops of dishwashing detergent in a bowl of warm water. Use the soap solution to wash off your eye dropper in-between essential oils, to prevent mixing. Rinse the eye dropper off and dry it with a towel.
4. Add 20 drops each of lemongrass and lavender essential oils to the sage and witch hazel mixture. Close the spray bottle and shake the mixture. Store your body spray out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources for longer-lasting fragrance in the bottle.
Basil-Chamomile Skin-Soothing Body Spray
5. Fill the spray bottle with 8 oz. of witch hazel.
6. Chamomile soothes irritated skin.
Add 20 drops each of chamomile and basil essential oils to the witch hazel in the spray bottle.
7. Close the spray bottle and shake to mix the ingredients. Use the basil-chamomile to soothe skin irritations due to inflammation; and use it as an insect repellent when you're outdoors.

Stopping the Frizz
In order to prevent hair frizziness, take a quarter size drop of olive oil and rub it together in your hands. Use your hands to apply the olive oil to your hair. In order for this method to work, make sure that your hair is completely dry before applying the olive oil. You can also use this method in the winter months to stop the static hair syndrome.
Storing Olive Oil
You can keep the olive oil stored in the original bottle that it came in if you like. However, if you would like the display to be easier on the eyes, you can empty the contents into your own personalized bottle. Bottles that contain pointed squirt nozzles are great for storing your olive oil because they make it easier to apply the olive oil to your hair. There is no pouring. All you have to do is point and squirt. A bottle of olive oil has a general shelf life of two to three years. To achieve maximum benefits be sure that you are not using an oil that has met it's expiration date.

Black salve or drawing salve is a traditional ointment which is said to pull infection, stingers, splinters, and other foreign objects from the skin. The main ingredient in commercial black drawing salves is ichthammol. Ichthammol is produced by distilling oil shale. Ichthammol is very difficult to find for sale individually. It is typically sold as the main ingredient in prepared black drawing salve.
However, you can make a similar black drawing salve at home by using bentonite clay, activated charcoal and herbal oils. Bentonite clay is commonly used in skin care for it's ability to draw impurities to the surface of the skin and increase blood flow.
Instructions
1. Warm the beeswax, cocoa butter and shea butter in a glass pot.
2. With a candy thermometer, measure the temperature of the wax and butters. Try to maintain a temperature of 180 degrees for 20 minutes.
3. Add the oils, charcoal powder and clay.
4. When the mixture is cool, stir in the essential oil of your choice.
5. Place the black drawing salve in sterile glass jars and store them in a cool, dark, dry area.
6. To use black drawing salve place a small amount on the area to be treated. Cover with gauze and change the gauze and drawing salve daily.

3. Concentrate on doing. Many have tried to prove that money and material things can buy happiness, and for some this may be true. If you have kids, set aside a specific time of day, every day, to take them to the park, rather than putting in those extra hours at the office.

5. Edit your list. The greatest favor you can do for yourself is to proofread your list of values and making sure you are happy with what you have written and the order you have them listed in. Electronic Medical Records, called EMRs, constitute a computer-based system for recording, delivering and managing patients' personal data. Computer-based patient records (CPRs) include any information taken at doctor visits, including physicals, medical history, laboratory tests, drugs prescribed, any referrals made and procedures done in the office, hospitals, clinics or outpatient offices. Advantages
The advantages of using a standardized EMR system include standardizing terms for procedures, setting one standard for biomedical semantics and widespread use of the National Drug Code (NDC). The EMR system, built with privacy safeguards established by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), allows patient records to be quickly moved for medical care and treatment. Early Use
The University of Vermont's PROMIS system, developed by Weed and collaborators, organized an automated medical record system. The Health Evaluation through Logical Processing (HELP), an early EMR system, was used at the Latter Day Saints Hospital in Utah, also in 1967. It expanded to serve 10 Intermountain Healthcare Hospitals by 1990. Both the Multiphasic Health Testing System (MHTS) and Computer-Stored Ambulatory Records (COSTAR) were piloted in 1968. Development
The first major push to organize patient information was made in 1969 with the Problem-Oriented Medical Record, using the so-called SOAP structure that included information on the subject, the medical objective, the assessment and a plan for the patient. Technology
While most medical offices continue to store patient information on paper in large "Chart Libraries" where charts are filed alphabetically, medical imaging has made some technological improvements. Government's Role
The federal government set a deadline for a computerized patient record system for 1999, but that deadline was abandoned when groups opposed computerization on patient-privacy grounds. Opponents also cited the inability of programs to integrate images, texts and numbers, but new computer programs easily incorporate all of these factors. The expense of transferring earlier records and purchasing equipment is still noted as a deterrent to EMR use, but equipment costs have fallen, and as of 2009, the federal government is considering assisting with funding. President Obama has characterized a national EMR system as a goal of his administration, and he made a pledge in 2009 that records will universally be recorded electronically by 2014.

Ingredients

Making the rice pillow
1. Fold the muslin right sides together and cut out a 5 1/2-inch by 20 1/2-inch rectangle.
2. Pin the right sides together. Leave one short end open.
3. Stitch around both long sides and one of the short sides of the muslin pillow using a 1/4-inch stitch. Use the smallest stitch length possible on your sewing machine for the inner cover to keep the rice from coming out.
4. Turn the rice pillow right side out. Be sure to push out the corners.
5. Fill the rice pillow about 3/4 full of rice so it stays soft and flexible. Experiment with the amount of rice until you like the feel of the pillow.
6. Turn the edges of the open end under, pin them together and then stitch it closed using a 1/4-inch stitch. You can stitch it by hand or on the sewing machine.

Identify Gray Syndrome
1. Find out if the baby has been given the drug chloramphenicol. Babies do not have the special proteins in their body to break down this drug.
2. See if the baby is eating correctly within two to nine days after the baby has been exposed to chloramphenicol. If a baby has Gray Syndrome, the baby will vomit, refuse to suck and produce loose green stools.
3. Look at the baby. If the baby's skin is an ashen color instead of the baby's normal color, it may be a sign of Gray syndrome. Also, lift the baby's arms and legs. If the baby's arms and legs are limp, this could be another sign.
4. Look at the babies lips and nails. If the baby has a blue coloration of the lips, tongue, finger nails or toenails, the infant may have Cyanois. Cyanosis is a symptom of Gray syndrome. It is caused by a lack of oxygen in the blood. The drug chloramphenicol has accumulated in the baby's blood stream causing this lack of oxygen.
5. Notify a doctor any time that you feel the baby has Gray syndrome. The doctor should test the baby's blood pressure and body temperature. Babies with Gray syndrome have hypo-tension or low pressure. They may also have hypothermia or low body temperature. The doctor should also test the baby's heart. Eventually, Gray syndrome can cause cardiovascular collapse if not treated in time.

Next, move your fingers to the other side of your shin bone on the inside of your leg. Slide your fingers toward your knee and try to find a slight hollow there. Making Your Night Guard
1. Purchase a plastic sports mouth guard from any sporting goods store, and trim away any excess plastic using a pair of sharp scissors.
2. Test the sports guard in your mouth to make sure you can center it between your front teeth. If the guard feels too large or small, try a different size.
3. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a pot. Remove the pot and let it sit on a heat-resistant surface for about 15 to 30 seconds.
4. Place the plastic sports guard into the hot water, and let it soak for 45 to 90 seconds (depending on the thickness of the plastic). Do not allow the plastic guard to touch any sides of the pot. (Use tongs if needed.)
5. Gently remove the sports guard from the water with a pair of tongs, and place the guard onto a clean surface for about 10 seconds.
6. Place the warmed guard into your mouth, using your fingers to mold the guard to the roof of your mouth and the front of your teeth up to the gum line.
7. Bite down on the guard to form it to your top and bottom teeth. Suck on the guard to create suction, which will allow the guard to have a snug fit in your mouth.
8. Allow the guard to continue to mold to your teeth for about two to three minutes, then remove and let it continue to set.

While there is no cure for the syndrome, physical therapy can often help relieve symptoms.
Causes
Although a direct cause of restless leg syndrome can not be found in most patients, it can be controlled by determining other factors that affect them. For example, if you use tobacco or drink alcohol or caffeinated beverages, then stopping those can reduce or eliminate the symptoms of restless leg syndrome. Vertical Push-Ups
Doing vertical push-ups can help stretch the ligaments, thus reducing tension in the legs. Stand at arms' length from and place your palms flatly on a wall. As you keep your body straight, relax both elbows and bring your chest closer to the wall as in horizontal push-ups. Then push your body back slowly to vertical position, remembering to keep the palms of both hands flat against the wall. Repeat this movement ten times, and perform this exercise twice daily.
Horizontal Leg Stretch
In this exercise, you should lie on your back with one leg lifted up. Put both of your hands on the ball of your foot and try pulling your leg over your head. Be sure to use only your hands to do so. This will be mildly painful, but hold the position for about three minutes. During this, there is no need for the leg to be straight. The effect that you are trying to produce is to stretch all muscles in the back of the leg, thus making them more pliable and relaxed. Repeat the exercise with the other leg.
Sitting Leg Stretch
This exercise requires two chairs that are facing each other and of equal height. Sit in one of the chairs, then lift your leg and put its heel on the other chair's seat. At this point, your leg should be straight out and in front of you.
Take a rolled towel and loop it around the ball of the extended foot, holding one end of the towel in each of your hands. When that is done, simply straighten your leg and pull gently on the towel until you feel your calf muscles reacting. Finally, lean forward carefully while continuing the tension on the towel. Be sure to keep your back straight, as this will stretch the leg muscles instead of those of your back. Hold this position for about thirty seconds, then repeat the process with your other leg. Perform this exercise twice daily.
Considerations
Restless leg syndrome has also been associated with iron deficiency and anemia as well as medical conditions such as nerve disease, diabetes, and kidney failure. Treating these conditions can alleviate symptoms. If you have any of these conditions, consult your doctor for care and treatment of these as well as other means to combat RLS.

Esophagitis is characterized by an inflammation, irritation or swelling of the throat. Erosive esophagitis is a specific disorder that occurs when gastric acid begins to wear away the delicate inner lining of the esophagus. This sometimes happens when people have acid reflux disease, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), so erosive esophagitis is a complication of GERD. GERD also is the most common cause of esophagitis.
Frequency
About one in three people with acid reflux disease eventually develop erosive esophagitis. Both conditions usually are very treatable with medication.
Similar Symptoms
Some erosive esophagitis symptoms are similar to those of GERD. They include a burning sensation in the chest and throat, small amounts of gastric acid regurgitation and sour taste.

The disorder also can cause difficulty or pain in swallowing, with those afflicted feeling like something is stuck in the throat.
Identification
A physician who looks at the esophagus lining of a person with this disorder will see redness and swelling. If the problem has progressed, inflammation breaks in the lining, and even deep ulcers can be seen.
Age Considerations
Severity of symptoms often decreases with age even as erosive esophagitis progresses. This may be an age-related decrease in sensitivity to pain.
There are many reasons why people get blisters, including a person's skin sensitivity to the sun to walking in high heels all day. Blisters are separations of skin filled with fluid, which can cause the area to become red and painful. Proper care is needed to keep your skin from becoming more irritated and to promote comfort. Here are the steps needed to heal a blister.
Instructions
1. Do not pop the blister. It is easier to heal when the skin is not broken because it will naturally shrink down in size by itself. If the blister prevents you from doing things, popping it may be an option. But the less irritating it is for the blister, the better it is. Leave it alone. Constantly touching it may create an infection and make it swell more. Blister is a skin irritation and the first thing you need to do is to relieve the skin from irritation.
2. Clean the area with soap and water to prevent infection of the area. A clean area is a good environment for the blister. If you must pop it, be sure to handle the area with clean hands and instruments. Assuming that you have no medical condition, such as diabetes, which would require a doctor's consultation, drain the water out of the blister by gently puncturing the base of the blister with a sterilized needle.
3. Protect it. Applying pressure on the area not only hurts, it makes the blister worse. Apply antibiotic cream or an ointment specifically formulated to heal blisters and cover with a sterile dressing. Use protective covering so it won't get infected or rubbed and will heal faster. Change the dressing every now and then to keep it fresh and clean.
4. Soak it in warm water at the end of the day to clean it and soften the blister. This also promotes healing because soft skin is less painful and less irritating for the blister. Gentle handling of the blister prevents scarring and will help heal it faster. By creating an environment that relaxes the skin, it puts less stress on the blister, helping the skin heal itself.
5. Eliminate the gauze. When it doesn't hurt anymore, you can stop covering it with gauze. The blister also needs to dry up so it can heal faster. Let air flow and circulate throughout the area. The dressing takes care of it when it is still sore, but when it becomes dry, it is less likely to get infected. Be careful with the blister so it won't scar.

Depending on the severity of a urinary tract infection, you may be able to cure it at home and save a trip to the doctor. Those who have had a UTI will undoubtedly recognize the symptoms immediately if an infection develops.
Instructions
1. Cut caffeine completely from your diet. Have acetaminophen handy for any caffeine withdrawal headaches. Caffeine is a huge problem for UTIs. Don't take any Excedrin or headache medicines that contain caffeine. Check the ingredient lists beforehand.

5. Sleep as much as you can. Whenever your body has an infection, your immune system works hard at fighting it. This can make your body tired. By getting plenty of rest, you can keep your immune system working hard to fight the infection.

When you undergo a root canal procedure, the pulp within the affected tooth is removed. This is because the decay within that tooth is so deep that the pulp is diseased and damaged. If left untreated, it can easily result in an infection, which leads to extraction of the tooth. Sometimes, after a procedure has been performed to remedy this problem, an infection still sets in, and you'll need to treat it so that it can heal.
Instructions
1. Contact your dentist if you're suffering from a persistent root canal infection. The infection could have caused an abscess that must be medically drained before any other form of treatment can start to work.
2. Get a prescription for an antibiotic to treat the root canal infection internally. The most effective way to do this is by using a prescription antibiotic that can "kill" the bacteria causing the infection.
3. Rinse your mouth with a saline (saltwater) solution each morning and night.
4. Continue good dental hygiene. Though you may be suffering from some pain due the root canal infection, you should continue your normal (or above normal) dental hygiene regimen.
5. Treat any pain or discomfort due to the root canal infection. Take an anti-inflammatory, like ibuprofen or acetaminophen, to reduce inflammation and lessen pain.

When the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, causing an overproduction of the hormone thyroxine, it can be a condition known as Graves' disease. Graves' disease is a form of hyperthyroidism. 1. Heat the olive and coconut oils over medium-low heat.
2. Place a metal meat thermometer in the pot. The temperature will need to reach 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
3. Put on the gloves and goggles. Pour the lye and water into the beaker. (Note: Avoid breathing in the fumes.)
4. Place the other thermometer in the lye solution. The temperature must reach 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
5. Pour the lye solution into the oils.
6. Stir the mixture until it reaches a gluelike consistency.
7. Add essential oils and stir well. For the vata dosha, use spikenard, ginger and licorice to warm up the body. For the pitta dosha, rose and winter cherry soothe and cool the body. For kapha, lemongrass and grapefruit invigorate.
8. Pour the mixture into soaps molds. Then place the molds in a dark room for 8 weeks to cure.
9. After the soaps have cures, remove them from the molds. Use them up to three times per day.
